Is this small necklace too much? In a soft white drusy instead of grey. I really like it because I think it completes the suit look and makes me look polished, but if it's too trendy then I won't wear it. (not me in the pic)

I do not recommend glittery jewelry.

Is the consensus a black bag rather than a beige/neutral one? Would any/all of these work?

I like the first one the best, but I'm not sure if the colorblock will work? Also most of these come in the beige color (like the second one), but I wasn't sure if black was preferred. Thanks!

My vote is the last one. The first kind of looks like a bowling bag with the color blocking and the middle two skew a little "tote"-y, even though they are smaller. Plus because they are essentially mini-totes, you would have to carry them in your hand, because if you wore them over the shoulder, the strap would really only make them come up to your armpit. The first and the last have longer straps so you can have your hands free.

What color is your suit? In my (non-adcom, little life experience) opinion, black should not be worn with navy, especially shoes/bags.. it just looks wrong and makes me wonder if the person can tell the difference between the two colors. So, if your suit is navy I would suggest a beige/neutral/tan/brown bag somewhat close to shoe color, but if your suit is black or grey then I would suggest either the 3rd or 4th black bag. First one is cute but not for interviews.

Hi guys!

Amazing advice, and a great compilation! I've read these threads every year, and now finally interviewing yay! I am going shopping tomorrow so I want to go in with a clear goal.

So my concerns, if you guys don't mind helping. I noticed it is advised to not have pants that line your butt, or make it too noticeable. For those of us that are curvy, small waist, wide hips, and really round butts the proportions have to be bigger on the butt and leaving the legs untailored makes you look like you're wearing parachute pants, but taking them in at the legs on make your butt even more pronounced. Should I just stay away from pant suits?

A-line Skirts would highlight less of the butt and slope down nicely, I think. Thoughts?

Also for purses, I really, really, do not want to spend the money on another purse. I have this one already, is it okay to use? I have the black one. The gold locker is a little "loud" but I can take off.

Tiny waist and round butt here checking in, I think a skirt suit would be your best bet. Go for a pencil, not A-line, I don't think I have ever seen an A-line skirt suit. But with pencil, you are looking for one that is not tight at the knee, you are looking for one that skims the hips and then falls straight down. More this less this.

The bag is fine but I would ditch the lock for this, especially because it has a brand logo on it. I took the leather Coach tag off my bag when I interviewed.

Thank you! Definitely see that the pencil straight down is better choice! Will definitely take the lock off, figured as much.

I instinctively would agree, but it's so hard to find nice looking brown shoes, they tend to look rather ugly and matronly. Brown bags also tend to look more casual. I have a navy suit and was leaning towards black shoes and bag just to make life simpler. @gyngyn I'd love to hear your opinion!

Is it ok to wear rings of two different metals or does it look tacky? My wedding set is yellow gold and my class ring is a plain narrow white gold band with engraving. I wear them on different hands.

I know it's a no-no fashion wise, but both are important to me and I don't mind it personally

Mixed metals are fine for small rings (as long as they are on your fingers).
This does remind me of the woman who kept fussing with her nasal septum ring until finally the interviewer asked if she needed a tissue. When she realized that she had forgotten to take it out, she burst into tears and had to be excused from the interview. Very sad. She didn't get in anywhere. I often wonder what happened to her.

:oops::oops: poor thing, that's a terrible thing to forget about

Thoughts on a tan (or light color) bag? I'm wearing a black dress suit or black pant suit (same jacket;);)) and black heels. I'm afraid a black bag will be too much black-especially with the dress.

Also where are ladies buying blouses? I'm petite but have a longer torso and I'm struggling to find a blouse that is simple and doesn't dip too low. A button up makes it look too masculine.

Also black wool blend pea coat that falls around the hip okay for cold weather?

I got this one from Express in a couple colors and it worked great for my interview this weekend. Machine washable, nice fabric/cut, and long enough to tuck in without worrying about anything.
One note though - when I tried it on (wore it around beforehand for a day to see how it would fall) the v-neck did dip a bit too low. However, since it's straight cut, I just snipped the label out of the collar and wore it backwards for my interview - worked perfectly as a boat neck shell.

You my friend are brilliant! I own similar shirts in a couple different colors-win!

Edited to remove. Decided I was being neurotic lol.

Hey, I just wanted to know if this necklace is okay for interviews. I'm not wearing any other jewelry BTW.

Really sorry to keep spamming this thread, I got an interview with 2.5 weeks notice, so I'm scrambling to get my outfit together :p

This is what I found today for shoes and purse. This would be with a navy suit.

thoughts?

The shoe is a matte dark brown color, not shiny
Ha, at least you have 2.5 weeks. I got mine with a 1 week notice. :scared:

If the shoes are comfy it looks good IMO.

1 week notice? That's insane! Hopefully it was IS
Yeah it was my state school. Got really excited when I received the email. Now that I think about it maybe I should've pushed the date a bit

Hi all, this thread and all related have been lifesavers! Seeking your wise opinions on a bag I already own - something along these lines in black: http://www.target.com/p/-/A-50716774 I use it for work (at a hospital, casual setting) every single day and it's held up really nicely (no scuffs, worn patches, etc.) - it easily fits folders, an umbrella, water bottle, etc. I find it really easy to just throw over my shoulder without a second thought.

Is this too casual/big or will it pass? Already dropped $150+ for the suit and have yet to book two plane tickets...thanks!

I think it may be too large and too casual. You don't have to drop hundreds on a new purse, Target actually has many appropriate options for under $30, check out their satchel section.

Tote bags are generally less formal, but that being said, most of the interviewees I've seen on my interview days had tote bags. They looked fine to me, but others might diasagree. If you can find a more structured bag for cheap, great. If not, I don't think you would be out of place with this bag.

Thanks a ton to you and @ifnotnowwren! I'll browse target - seems they have lots of options - but also good to know that if I can't find anything I like, I'll still be fine.

If we are wearing suit pants and dress heels, do we need panty hose or some type of hose-sock thing?

I would still wear panty hose socks, if only to make the shoes more comfortable/less likely to cause blisters

If we are wearing pantsuits (I am female), are pantyhose still necessary?

ETA: Nvm I see someone already asked the question.

Hey everyone!
Would someone be able to let me know if this suit is appropriate? I think the jacket is fine, but I'm nervous about the pants. I went to Macy's with my mom and tried everything on. The pants aren't ankle pants on me AT ALL, probably because I'm so short, and they don't fit tight at all. I was going to wear the shirt that is actually pictured with the jacket (not intentional), and then I also bought another shirt, which I think I may return. Thoughts?

the links don't work but I think I found what you were talking about. The blazer looks too small on the model, specifically the arms. If it looks longer on you, I think it's fine. The top pictured with the blazer looks a bit low cut, almost like a cami, but maybe that's just the model pic.

As for the pants, it might help to submit a pic of you in them (with head cropped out of course. ) It's kind of hard to guess what they would look like on you :)

Couple questions:

1) I have a black suit and a light grey pant suit. I didn't know that light grey was considered "too casual," and would like to wear it to some of my interviews. Would this be a problem? It fits well and meets all the other guidelines.

2) I have a silver necklace with an elegant-looking, simple treble clef pendant (yes, I am a musician). It's a nice necklace, in my opinion, doesn't call attention to my bust, and represents an aspect of my life that is important to me. I also talked quite a bit about the influence being a musician has had on me in my application, so it would kind of "fit" with the overall image. I do not have access to another necklace to wear, at least not before my first interview on Friday. Would the treble clef necklace be appropriate, or should I go without one?

Thanks to all of the advice on this thread and #3! If anyone is still looking, here's what I ended up purchasing...(Let's just promise not to match on interview day)
Green Blouse from H&M, $15: http://www.hm.com/us/product/47646?article=47646-F
Ayyyyy I have the same green blouse. It looks great but man that thing is a wrinkly b*tch........I folded it one time in my suitcase and it came out looking like I'd done origami with it
