Being from a big city in Florida, and also from a large university, Lewisburg is going to be quite the adjustment. Any of you in the same situation? What will you miss the most from your home state/city?

Here's my list:
1.) The beach....and surfing!
2.) kickboxing, and my dojo
3.) warm weather for 80% of the year
4.) a variety of restaurants....especially SUSHI!
5.) having a choice of bars/clubs to go out to (not that I'll have much time for that anyways, but still)
6.) GREAT shopping

ditto!!! except the kickboxing thing. i will sure miss 24 hour fitness though. :(

I think they told me on the campus tour during the interview that the gym on WVSOM campus is open 24-hours? Hmmm...maybe I'm wrong?

4. Target and 3 malls within 20 minutes of me
5. my running friends and swimming buddies

7. alas, the radio stations!! Does West Virginia know what alternative music is and what "unplugged" means??

I'm from a farming community. I was wondering, does anyone like hiking or just plain old sitting around a big bonfire?

I can see us all going out and having a big bonfire at night. Those are the greatest. I can tell you guys awsome stories around the fire. :)

2.) kickboxing, and my dojo

A martial arts class is one thing I definately checked on when I interviewed cause I'm big into Taekwondo. There is a Jujitsu class that meets on campus. Its not kickboxing or taekwondo, but its something

Heck, Lewisburg is just a smaller version of my town from what I can tell...so I'll only miss my family, friends, and my church

I love to hike. I went to undergrad in Chattanooga, TN and would hike on the mountains quite a bit. Are there any good trails in Lewisburg?

No, I believe the gym and anatomy lab are both open 24-hrs. For the tuition we are paying, I wish they had an indoor pool :D

i'll second the indoor pool!! the gym is open 24/7, but is it TINY in regard to the weights and cardiovascular. obviously the basketball court is big.

i'm a huge fan of hiking as well. maybe we will have to start a hiking club!?

Are you a martial artist too? Blackbelt in kenpo here. ;) I'm going to miss it. I heard about the jujitsu, which I definately want to check out....but there's no actual dojo? They just meet on campus? That's different...

Yes, I love martial arts. I'm a red belt in Taekwondo. Since I'm moving for school, I'll be like two months from being able to get my black belt :( I'm a little familiar with Kenpo...a guy I used to spar in college was a national kenpo champion and we had some good matches. Hey, you ever studied Aikido? That art is my favorite. About Jujitsu, if you have never studied it, do it. It art has to be one of the best all-encompassing arts.

yea, a huge basketball court is a must for me. Yea, a hiking club would be cool. In Chatt, we had waterfalls and streams to hike to; I hope those are in WV as well.

We meet in a ballet studio kinda near the school (but not walking distance about 10 min driving distance from the school). So we do have a dojo. It's a fun class but we need more people. Right now there are just three regular members that show up for class.

JohnUC33,

Good luck on your future blackbelt test! Very exciting! We have lots of people that had Taekwondo experience come to our dojo, and their kicks are always amazing since you guys work legs so much (or so I've been told). I really enjoy kenpo, it's definately something that I want to keep up and maybe go back to someday. It's more of a street-based style so there are TONS of practical uses for it. That's the whole reason I got involved with martial arts...to have something that I could use in a realistic situation. Very fun.

Megalofyia,

Thanks for the info. :) I'm definately interested....who can I contact?

Duchess,

Thanks. But I meant to say that I'm moving for school a few months before I can test for my black belt, so I probably won't be able to get it. Yea, Taekwondo is mainly about kicks. But sometimes we on work on kicks so much that it loses it practicality. Why spend hours perfecting a jumping back round house when you know its foolish to use that kick in a real self-defense scenario? The art I really want to spend my life learning is Aikido, but its hard to find a teacher.

Megalofyia,

I would like that contact information as well. As for Jujitsu, I am mainly familiar with brazilian/gracie jujitsu. Is what you study anything like that?

Hey do you study a certain form of Taekwondo? For instance, I study Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo under the heading of grandmaster Tae Zae Park. Hey, what is Go-Ju exactly? Is that another form of Karate?

I had typed out a response earlier but I guess it didn't get published.

We aren't doing Brazilian jujuitsu. It's more traditional Japanese. We have a guy in our class who used to study Brazilian jujuitsu; he seems to be enjoying the class.

Dr. Ward is the jujuitsu teacher (as well as one of the anatomists). His email is [email protected]
He's a super nice guy and very knowledgeable.

You are two hours away from the studio of Ernie Boggs (304.759.1060), if you are into Gracie jujitsu I'm sure you recognize the name (if not go to the link below). You may not be able to go thru the week, but I'm sure you can hit the Saturday classes...

There's a 83 you don't kow karate?????? I just assumed you did being asian and all ;) hehehe You might not fit the asia stereotype but you have got the californian surfer chick stereotype down  I bet you never thought a guy "they" call jiggles could kick some a$$ heheheheh j/k :D

Go-ju is a very traditional Okinawan form of martial arts. It has some similarities to akido with all the circular motions just not as in depth as akido. I liked it better than Taekwondo but that is just my opinion.

I guess I am the only one who knows nothing about martial arts. I went to a few Aikido classes during college because they had a class on campus, but that was about it.

Anyone into poker or cards. My fiance and I have a couple sets of the professional chips and play with friends on monday nights, mostly texas hold 'em. If anyone's interested maybe we could get together and do this sometime.

I took karate when I was probably 8, so I really don't too much about the martial arts either. I love cards though. I'm a huge eucher and poker fan.

Anyone on here play tennis?

I've tried it a few times and stank horribly, but I've always wanted to learn. But I do play golf somewhat regularly. Anyone else?

we could do a "bring your own drinks" or beer/etc if you drink, soda/sweet tea if you don't. I'm not much of a drinker, but it would make for a more relaxing game for those who do--especially after an exam!!! I've never played eucker-- you'll have to show me that one...have played tennis--but I'm not that good.

suck at poker and tennis but always up for beer.

definitely interested. my wife and i play poker, texas hold'em, frequently. we play with friends quite often and even play at casinos every once and a while.

sounds like a plan, good way to take a break from the studies.

Hello Classmates!
Congrats To All

Hey Duchess!

Well I Finally Found A Place...what A Headache!

Hope Everyone Has Had Some Luck In That Dept....

I Am Learning Texas Hold Em....and Looking Forward To Some Dojo With Duchess...

Congrats Again Everyone...happy House Hunting...and See You In August....

Does anyone know if WVSOM is moving to the "normal" exam schedule or is it still in blocks. I've heard last year that they were proposing of doing that this fall but haven't heard anything yet.

Who else is going the cheaper route and getting a sleeping room instead of an apartment? Since there's no lease I figured if I don't like it I could always move in with someone during the school year or get my own place when it becomes available and since I will be in the area I could check it out.

Mazimi,

I am SO glad to hear that you found a place! Doesn't it feel like a weight has been lifted off of your shoulders? I remember how stressed I was when I was apartment hunting. I'll give you a call later to hear all about it. Best of luck to anyone else apartment hunting!

I'm still working on the white water trip, but I have only heard interest from 3 people. Any other takers????

Bad news guys. tuition went up again about $3000. Which means double overtime for me throughout the summer. i'm sure many of you are in the same situation.

who here will be taking out the maximum amount of loans? what do you think about it and how do you think you will deal with the debt and interest rates?

i dont really see any reason to take out that much money, seems like way too much. im pretty sure that i will be able to live comfortably on much less than the maximum.
