WVSOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
are there any larger towns nearby?

I'd say the closest larger towns are Beckley, WV a little over an hour away and Roanoke, VA about 90 minutes away. A lot of us will take little day trips up to those places on weekends when we aren't studying for upcoming exams. There are even larger cities in pretty much all directions within a 3-5 hour drive depending on where you want to go.

Anyone on here interviewing on 9/25? I have the pleasure of taking you guys out to lunch!

I know this question was asked before, but I would like to know from somebody who visited/attending the school what was last years class average stats, especially MCAT score, because the website says: "Competitive applicants normally average a 3.4 science GPA and MCAT scores between 22 and 23."

I highly doubt that's true anymore, so please let me know if you talked to admission office/student/have a brochure, etc.......you get the idea.

Also, if you know other info.
Thanks

That's not always the case, that's for sure. I got lower than that and I was accepted 🙂 The "cut-offs" are never concrete, in my opinion--all depends on the well-roundedness/uniqueness of the applicant.

my application status has gone from:
In Process-Decision Pending
to now just saying
Decision Pending
Good? Bad? Neither?
if anyone knows how long does it typically take to know from here?
thanks.

are you trying to see how long it takes to get a interview or a decision for acceptance? because mine says decision pending too and I just had a interview on the 18th. They said that we should have a decision by today, which I thought was really fast.

thanks, I know it took me 2-3 weeks after they received my primary to receive a secondary (which is basically a interview invite)

Did anyone who interviewed on 9/18 hear about their status today?

Congratulations and welcome to the Class of 2014!🙂

What impression did you have after visiting the school? Are you still holding out for other schools?

ps. We do have a facebook group started so hopefully see you there.

Acceptance today!

Interviewed very recently. They are quick!

Just checked my status, "ACCEPT APPLICANT!" Nice! Didn't drive 22 hours there and back for no reason!

Angie was probably the nicest person I've ever met. Not just talking about adcoms, but civilians on planet Earth. Not even exaggerating. The turnaround time is ridiculous! 3 business days 🙂

Interviewed last week, accepted today! 🙂 First med school acceptance!!!

Loved the campus, loved the facilities, and the current students seemed really nice. The area was beautiful, too.

The only drawback, for me, is the distance from home, so I still have to think about it. So I'm leaning toward yes, but not 100% decided yet.

Accepted as well...any of you for sure WVSOM is where you will be attending?

It's still so early. However, I will be withdrawing some applications this week.

Congrats to all those accepted! Hope to see you next year!

so just checked the status, and it says acceptance, now its time to make a decision between two medical schools

Congratulations on all of your acceptances!

Glad to see another Gaithersburg native might be coming this way! 👍

congrats to everyone else who got acceptances this week! Just out of curiosity, has anyone received any info from the admissions office? I have only seen that my status changed, but I haven't been contacted at all.

Looks like there are no direct flights to Lewisburg out of Laguardia NY...anybody facing this dilemma? Either have to fly to Ohio, then take another plane to WV, or fly to Roanoke, then drive to Lewisburg.

Just drive the entire thing. 8 hours? The scenery itself makes it worthwhile.

I flew into Charleston and the drive was about 1 hr 45min. I heard Roanoke is closer according to mileage but not nearly as a direct driving route as Charleston

This is definitely true but if you do drive all the way there, I suggest getting a hotel room because you don't want to be exhausted for the interview.

Accepted! Gotta start making some choices now...

Could someone please post the questions on the secondary? My application got stuck in processing for 8 weeks 😡 and is just getting sent to schools this week so I want to get ahead on these questions.

Secondary is only sent to those invited for an interview, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you do get invited for an interview, you just have to complete it within two weeks of the invite and it is short and easy.

Thanks, by the way!

You're welcome!

Hmm, well...kind of ironic, actually...I did my undergrad just south of NOVA, at the University of Miami. I loved it there...but I was ready for a change. I, of course, am biased...I LOVE WVSOM and WV, and am already 100% attending. Like many have said on SDN--the right school for you isn't necessarily revolved around the best stats, residency matches, or board score averages--it is whatever fits you and your studying habits and lifestyle the best. I love WV and the beauty of it...and my boyfriend of 4 1/2 years, my entire extended family, (and my Steelers, haha) are all in the very nearby vicinity. Those are HUGE factors for me. In addition, the hospitality and overall personality of WV and its quaint towns have always appealed to me. I, personally, also think the less distractions in medical school, the better! Lewisburg, WV won't offer many of those. Fort Lauderdale, FL....a bit more. Though, I already got my taste of the 24/7-beach-access-south Florida lifestyle...maybe it's your turn for that!

NOVA is an awesome school. I have two friends who I just graduated with this past May who started there this August...they love it. They're also FL natives. Consider the things that are most important to you and it will make your decision loads easier. Location? Surrounding city/lack of city life? Family vicinity? Rotation sites? Tuition? Teaching style (SBL/PBL...option for either)? Lab style? Cost of living? etc. etc.

Hope that helps! Good luck in making your decision.....and I hope it is a north-bound one! 🙂

Hi everyone!

congratulation to the class of 2014!

I recently decided that I want to be a physician and I really absolutely fell in love with this school. Saying that, I have not completed all of the required courses for admission. I was wondering what the likelihood of getting an interview even though I have not completed the required courses yet, but will have by the the end of that school year, when I graduate.

Thank you!

This is really hard to say. How recently did you decide to be a doctor? Do you have a lot of good medical exposure? How good is your MCAT, non-science GPA, and how many prereqs are you missing?

All these questions asked, I've heard that WVSOM is pretty good about evaluating candidates holistically. So if you're a pretty well rounded candidate with a decent MCAT (and you didn't decide to be a doctor yesterday), I'd say you have a shot.

Thanks missDO. thats good advice! I talked with some folks about the new curriculum over there, and I think I'm sold pretty much on WVSOM!

Great! Good luck with everything...hope to see you next August!

I just got accepted ( a few hours ago)!

If anyone has questions about the interview process, feel free to ask me.

Where can I find interview questions for this school?

So probably a dumb question but this is the first time i checked my applicant status and I didn't know what it was prior to my interview. "Accept Applicant" means I'm accepted right? Not just i'm accepted for an interview. I interviewed yesterday.

congrats!!! yes you have been accepted... you will get a letter in the mail that will further state your acceptance and also tell you what you need to do now in order to hold your seat... no rush, you have until dec 15th to decide if you want to hold a seat or not...

WVSOM is a great school... i am still waiting to hear back from some other schools i interviewed with before i make any final decisions... i couldn't believe how kind and warm the admissions staff were... even if i dont go to that school, i think i may just make drives to lewisburg whenever i have bad days and just sit in that waiting area for an hour or so... its better than yoga!!!

Great news!! Yeah that interview was so great and laid-back. It was my first, and a good one to start with!

I interviewed yesterday and just checked my status. Does anyone know what "accept with contingency" would mean?

It probably means that you are accepted, but you still need to complete some pre-reqs in order to meet the requirements.
Same thing as a "conditional acceptance".

where are yall checking your statuses at?
