Match lists 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So You're saying that VCOM CC had a radiation oncology match? ....if so, it never ceases to amaze me how newer schools always seem to attract one super human gunner that matches into something insanely competitive.

That's basically how the curve works, 10% abnormal on both sides

It's probably a person who screwed up early on, got their act together and excelled in med school.
The newer DO schools were the only ones who would take them because of the bad start.

Nah. Plenty of people have bad starts and are at all qualities of DO schools.

DOs match radonc every year. Its not many DOs, but 2-4 tend to match almost every year. Don't forget, its a highly specialized residency/field and not a ton of people get exposed to it in med school (i.e. not a ton of people go for it). VCOM-CC matching just demonstrates the well-known belief that most ACGME residencies view all DO schools in a single category.

Or they just were from SC and wanted to stay close to home. Don't assume everyone at a new school is at the only place they could get into. There are lots of reasons why someone might choose a specific school.

Yeah I'm talking 2.0 freshman year. Probably several of those students in all DO schools. They just kill it from there on.

Well that is good news. The rest of their match list was ok, the radiation oncology just took me by surprise a bit. I just don't know what to think about certain specialties anymore. I remember being on a thread a while ago talking about pubs, in which people gave evidence that rad onc residents had like 5+ publications at least on average during medical school. That's tough at any school let alone a new D.O school., so maybe that isn't always the case.

Ya agreed. I went to a new school for a Post Bac Masters, and knew some of the med students there. Some were exceptional students that got into other schools, but wanted to help develop things at the school. New schools often take a lot of input from their students and some people like having an impact like that.

Personally I do not, but most of my rotations are at the same hospital. I've got info on my first rotation (what it is but not where or with who) that is not in my hospital. Most here at my school only know 1 or 2 rotations right now.
Had everything except for electives set up in December. As of now, all except one of my electives is set up. Hope to set that up by July.

Thanks for the input. I ended up getting my rotation assignments yesterday and I'm really happy with how everything turned out.

If you want RadOnc, you absolutely need a bunch of publications. Just because the school doesn't offer opportunities doesn't mean DO students don't publish, it just means they have to put in more effort to do it than students at schools with established research departments. I for example have a number of pre-med school publications, but in my two years in med school only have a whopping 1. Most people I know interested in research get 2-3 in 3rd year though, so I'm hoping for that.

Most fields don't require a ton of research, but for some (like radonc) it's essentially a prerequisite. I'm not interested in radonc (I just like research), but a DO I know that matched into it at a competitive university did a research year between 3rd and 4th year just to get enough radonc research under their belt.

I don't feel like typing up the entire TCOM match list from Facebook posts...

Emergency Medicine:
-Baylor College of Medicine (first DO they've matched)
-UTSW Austin
-Texas Tech El Paso
-Christus Spohn Corpus Christi (x2)
-University of Mississippi
-UT Houston
-John Peter Smith Fort Worth (x2)
-Western Michigan
-Drexel
-Henry Ford

All of these west coast EM matches from other schools have me pumped for the 2016 match. Either the osteopathic grads this year have been exceptional, or the west-coast DO bias is starting to weaken (or both).

IDK what kinda map you're looking at, but none of these are west coast matches. They are great, for sure, but not west coast.

The NRMP also doesn't think Texas, Mississippi, or Michigan are west coast, either.

Listen, I'm done with school now and waiting for residency to start. I don't read things for facts or details anymore. I just look for opportunities to talk about my own opinions. Please carry on using your words correctly but I can't promise I won't misinterpret them again at some point.

I have no idea, could be either. This was from info that was told to me in a meeting I went to a month ago that I was half asleep during.

Holy crap, like 2/3 went for primary care. What is the average student debt for DMU?
Tuition is about average for DO schools (low 40s) , I have no idea what the average student debt is.

Also I think we are just very primary care focused

KCU Match as I posted it almost 2 months ago. Surprisingly hasn't changed.

Check out secret agent man at the bottom of KCU, what the hell is up with that. Did the person match at the NSA?

I'm sure it's placement rate. I can't imagine any DO school having a 100% match rate. Very few (if any) MD schools can even claim that.

So someone at DMU matched into Neuromuscular Med-OMT. I didn't even know those programs existed anymore...

Why wouldn't they? The ACGME even made an RRC (Residency Review Committee) specifically for NMM/OMM programs. It was part of the merger agreement.

Yep, my dean sent out a notification to all students that we had a 100% placement rate. I'll bet the 1st years got really excited about that.

It's still a good thing, there are schools out there where some students don't get into training at all. In the Caribbean, even a majority at some places.

But people should be careful to realize that this 100% placement rate idea doesn't mean everyone matched. Just that all the ones that didn't match got something after the SOAP/Scramble.

No idea where the discrepency is coming from. @goldenroc didn't pull it out of his butt though, I've seen that Mass Gen one on the class of 2015 Facebook page as well as on a google docs map that the student body put together. These sources have personal information (names) attached to them though, so I'm not going direct links. FWIW, the list I just put up was from an email we got from the student government leadership.

Edit: my bad. When I edited the list we got from student body (it came as an excel spreadsheet), I tried to remove preliminary matches from places where someone had already matched a PGY-2 spot. Looks like I accidently placed them under prelim medicine.

Edit: I fixed the error. I moved them to anesthesiology from preliminary medicine, and removed the prelim site for simplicity's sake, because let's be honest, no one really cares where they matched for their intern year when they matched where they did for the residency.

If you want to be more precise, there should only be 1 person for Rush anesthesia, and 3 for UT Houston. One of them is doing a prelim at Rush, but will be at UT Houston for anesthesia.

Thanks... I was trying to make the list we got from our student government leaders more readable for SDN, and in the process I kind of screwed up a few things. I think people can get a good feel for the match list though, sorry if you're one of the people whose match I messed up.

no, didn't mess mine up. its not an easy task assembling the match list and it does give the general idea of how we match. it looks about the same as how we've done in years past.

Univ of Iowa also, according to the commencement program.

You guys will have to forgive me since I have no prior knowledge about the merge. @SLC @hallowmann @NurWollen

When AOA and ACGME match merge, there won't be separated match anymore, right? Can I assume the match will happen at the same time? (Unlike AOA match happens before ACGME match). If so, does anyone know when this is fully implanted?

No one really knows yet, for sure. The AOA has hinted that there will be a combined match, but hasn't given a timetable for it yet. A lot of us assume that as an individual AOA program gains full ACGME accreditation, it will switch over to the NRMP (MD) match. In that case, there would be one match by 2020 when all programs must be ACGME accredited. But whether that will be the process or not is still just conjecture.

This.

I've heard people throw around 2017 or 2018, but its all non-guaranteed rumors. I think its safe to assume that by 2020 they will be combined, but I wouldn't bet on anything until a real timeline comes out, which won't happen until maybe the year before the combined match.

Chances are if you're in school right now, you probably won't be in a combined match, unless they do something uncharacteristic and actually finish things up ahead of schedule.

how much OMM bs is there in AOA internal medicine residency? And in a residency that is dually accredited, does that mean the DOs get separated and have to have OMM shoved down there throats while the MDs are learning how to practice medicine?

I'm doing ACGME so I didn't get a good feel for this apart from a couple of dual-accredited interviews I went on. But from what I can tell, unless you're doing a NMM/OMT residency, or a FM/NMM residency, it'll be a lot like what you had in 1st and 2nd year. Basically a couple of hours per week (maybe every 2 weeks or something) during didactic time where you'll learn and do OMM. You may also have an OMM rotation required of you during residency.
