Does anyone know/have a rough idea when UNLV sends their second round of acceptances?

Does anyone know/have a rough idea when UNLV sends their second round of acceptances?

I interviewed 12/14 and they said admissions would be meeting again on Jan. 14th so I'm assuming either that day or shortly after!

Can anyone attending UNLV Dental School discuss pros and cons of the school? I heard students have great clinical experience + cost of attendance is on the lower side. Also, in terms of clinical experience, what type of procedures are performed by the students? Thanks in advance.

I am in my second semester of my 1st year now currently!

Pro's: Like you mentioned, great clinical experience. I'll be working on my first real patient here in less than 9 months (and I've only been in school 4 so far). Also there are no shortages of patients out here in Vegas -- as long as you do your work you will have no trouble completing all your competencies before graduation. Cost is lower, which should be one of your MAJOR factors so that's fantastic. The clinic has brand new chairs and the sim-lab has newer technology as well (3 Cad-Cam machines in there). The professor's are good and knowledgeable (Dr. Kingsley has been here since the school opened and a fantastic lecturer. He was the 'loud' one during your interview day.... everyone loves him). Also, you're in Vegas -- always something to do and friends and family want to actually visit (don't need to babysit them when they come.... go drink on the strip, I'll see ya in a few hours sort of thing)

Con's: UNLV Med School now has it's second class in the same buildings as the Dental School -- getting a bit crowded in the parking lot and will continue to worsen (the school is planning on adding 100 spots here in the coming year to help alleviate parking concerns). Most of the bathrooms aren't very nice, although you can find hidden gems if you know the spots. Being forced to buy a specific laptop (for me, a Dell Latitude) is really annoying and expensive for the machine you get -- nobody likes them. Also, and it's probably similar with other schools, some semesters feel unnecessarily loaded with tough didactic work while others aren't nearly as stressful -- spacing out the classes would seem to be a smarter call in my opinion. 1st semester of 1st year is insane, while the semester I'm in now is not so much. But if you study and manage your time, you'll be just fine even during the hardest times. I was never the best student in undergrad (3.1 GPA), and yet still managed to have a significantly higher GPA the first semester and that's with taking 12 classes and 30 units haha

Procedures performed by the students are just everything you'd expect and require in dental school. I'm only a D1 so I don't know the names of everything, but you can expect Class 1's, Class 2's, Endo work, Crowns, Partial Dentures, extractions, etc. Maybe bridges too, but I can't say that with a certainty as I can the ones mention above.

Nothing yet. At my interview on November 30th they said we'd be hearing back on January 15th. Starting to get a little worried :/

My interview also on November 30th too, but i thought they said Feburary 1 instead of Jan 15

No. I was at the November 30th interview as well and they told us we would hear back 2nd week of January around the 15th, so I'm very confused.

I called them today around noon and they said that they were going to call people in-state and out-of-state later today. So no one has heard anything?

Agreed, I interviewed 12/14 and Dr. Ancajas told us the committee would be meeting on the 14th, so I assumed we would hear something this week. I'm getting anxious lol.

I'm going to assume they weren't able to call people today and will instead start calling tomorrow. I haven't even gotten a portal change.

I think it's going to be on the 22nd after the MLK day.

Accepted at 7am(PST)! It says in the acceptance letter that a "letter of intent" portion was added to our checklist on Grad Rebel Gateway but I'm not seeing it. Anyone else?

When I was accepted back on December 3rd, I wondered the same thing. A few days later the acceptance packet came in the mail and had everything in it. So I filled out the forms and mailed them to the school and then I got an email updating me on anything they still needed/things they had received. The email they sent had a short checklist.

Accepted as well. In the acceptance letter it also says that the letter of intent and $750 deposit is due on January 2nd. I'm assuming that's a mistake and it's supposed to be February 2nd?

Got accepted as well. Dr. Ancajas told me it wasn't due till February 18th.

Questions for current students:
1) in which areas of Las Vegas do most students live? What are some of the better or safer areas to live?
2) how is the student insurance? Do most people pay for the student insurance or buy their own?

Thanks in advance.

I copy/pasted this from a message I sent to someone else here recently:

Students live throughout Las Vegas, mostly in Summerlin, Henderson, and Spring Valley. Henderson is the most residential, almost like suburbia but it's about a 20-30 min drive on the 15 Freeway from the south to the north. Summerlin is nice (where I live) and it's northwest of the school. About 10-15 min to school. Spring Valley is closest and I know some people who live there. However, out of the 3 it is the least safe (not saying it isn't safe, but there are good and bad areas for sure). There is no on-campus housing options, as the dental school is in a medical park that has the dental school, medical school, nursing school, and UMC hospital all in the same location.

The general rule of thumb for UNLV SDM is the further West (Northwest, directly west, or Southwest) of the school you go, the nicer. Henderson is directly south/southeast and is really nice too, but a bit out of the way (and it's more for like families and what not). Whatever you do, do not look at places in Northern Las Vegas AKA old Las Vegas. That is the bad side of town.

2.) I think most students just get the student insurance. Buying your own is a hassle and the student insurance isn't a bad deal. Get free flu shots and what not like normal health insurance.

I know they just had a wave of acceptances but anyone have any idea when we could maybe expect another? Maybe mid-Feb?

They said second or third week of Feb when I interviewed

Anyone know if UNLV requires you to get a specific laptop? Or are you free to choose what you want?

Hiii I'm a D1 :)

Just wanted to chime in on the insurance. I'm out of state and my previous insurance provider, Kaiser, doesn't have any locations in Vegas so I had to get the student insurance. I actually like it a lot. The health center is on main campus which is about 15 min away, but for things like required vaccinations and HepB serology, the nurses/PAs actually came out to the dental school during the beginning of the year to administer them for us which was very convenient. There was a previous issue with the health center hours since we were in class when the health center was open, but they extended their hours on Thursdays to open until 8 pm and accommodate for us which was really nice. It's a bit confusing to navigate through the benefits, but they're actually pretty decent. The health center doesn't have all the specialists you might need, but they can refer you out to different providers. The insurance doesn't include vision or dental, but tbh, you won't really need dental insurance.

You are currently required to purchase a specific laptop as the school has a contract with Dell and you can only access axiUm (like Dentrix) from that laptop based on the way IT configures it. However, a lot of us only use the laptop for exams/to access axiUm and use Macbooks, iPads, Surfaces, etc. during class to take notes.

We're working on changing the laptop policy as there are MANY complaints about it. It won't affect your class though :/

Does that mean the laptop is not so great if a lot of the students use two laptops?

Yeah, the laptop is an absolute POS lol. I had to buy an SSD and extra RAM for it because it could NOT handle the crap IT put on it so it would crash constantly. A big issue was that this was the first year the laptops came preloaded with Windows 10 (which is bizarre considering the fact that Windows 10 came out 4 years ago...but whatever...), and programs were incompatible which led to crashing. It was a huge, logistical mess during the beginning of the year and IT was bombarded constantly. I remember having to take a written test because my laptop just crashed immediately before an exam which was fine, just annoying esp. when we paid $1400 for the stupid thing.

Getting the SSD and RAM was a huge improvement so the laptop's a lot better now...but this is to be expected as I spent another $200. I use it to type notes when I don't feel like writing on my iPad in class.

I got one yesterday. I have no desire to attend the school and won't be returning it. One less person on the alternate list!
