The Republic of Texas XXXII: Everything is better in the Lonestar State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yo tambien...except I wouldn't mind going to TCOM neither. Even though it is DO, it is a pretty good school.

Nothing against DO, but I dont want to jump through hoops for residencies, take twice as many board exams, and have certain fields cut off before I even enter medical school.

I'll admit that I don't know much about DO neither and I haven't interacted with one, but from the MDs that I have talked to, you are only at a slight disadvantage with this degree, if not at all, especially if you go to TCOM (one of the best DO schools). Also, I know for a fact that you can get into any field with a DO. That being said, I will not start DO vs MD thing on this thread so this is my first and last comment about this topic.

Yes I will choose most Texas MD schools over TCOM, but not all. I'll make that decision once the interview season is over.

Meanwhile, I just got the call from TCOM so I know that my interview invite is real!! Im super pump:laugh:

1. I advise you to look at residency match data from DO schools and see how many match into derm/plastic surgery/otolaryngology/etc....

The number is very very low compared to allopathic schools... which means you will have to be even more competitive than your fellow D.O. students and M.D. students to have a chance at matching.

2. Most specialties, there isnt a signficant disadvantage. But there is for some.

3. D.O.s arent recognized everywhere. I will want to practice a little bit in India, and the degree is not recognized there.

Not trying to start a DO vs MD war either. Just stating the facts.

Just FYI to anyone else who may be reading, the rules involved in serving India short-term with a medical mission organization or doing an international rotation in India are different from the rules involved in obtaining a license in India.

You need to be an Indian citizen and fulfill whatever other requirements (I think there's a screening test, internship requirement, etc) put forth by the Medical Council of India to obtain a medical license in India. From what I understand, the status of the ability of a DO to obtain a medical license in India is still listed as "undetermined" as a DO has yet to meet the requirements and go through the whole process of applying for a license in India.

However, some DO schools have international rotations in India and organizations like Doctors without Borders take DOs.

I have dual citizenship. The undetermined status has been there since 1979 I think. It's not going to change anytime soon. And certainly not something to gamble on.

Just in case anyone is interested:

Submitted TMDSAS: 6/11
Transmitted to schools: 6/24

My post was directed towards others reading the thread who might be interested in short-term medical mission trips and rotations and such and not obtaining a license in India.

I think DO is a non-issue for you taking your stats into consideration

non-issue? as in I will get into an MD?
one can hope.

Thanks for starting this thread!
Does anyone know if TMDSAS can be sent to schools before your LORs are in? My school just told me that their committee packet won't be ready until August 1st, but I submitted TMDSAS last week. It's being processed now, but it will be sent to schools before August, right?

you're welcome.

TMDSAS transmits information as it receives it.
So your TMDSAS application will be sent to schools first. Then your LOR's when they are received by TMDSAS.

They wont hold your app until they receive everything.

Hope that answers your question.

Also, i just got all TRUEs on my A&M app with a pending notification.

me too! But I think that's because my LORs aren't in yet.

Mine are so i dont think its that. It just might be that we are in the next pile to be reviewed.

LOL now if this was August or september, I would be calling them up to see what the deal was.

I've had all the A&m stuff in for a whole also and it says pending still for me as well.

Same.

Submitted primary 06/08, verified 06/20, submitted A&M secondary 06/23, and then got "true" on all of them this morning. Not sure what it means...

Mine says true for all except MCAT scores. I have an MCAT score in but I retook on 6-20. I wonder if they will hold-off on making that one 'true' until July when my latest score is back.

On another note: I'm getting so excited about this year! I'm so much more confident in my app than I was last year and am really hoping things turn out differently for me. SDN is a great support group for all of us crazy pre-meds, y'all are the best 😍

I just found out that my paper was accepted at a journal, but I submitted TMDSAS (and AMCAS) last Friday. I didn't mention the paper at all in my applications because of the uncertain nature of publishing. There's no way to add this now, right? I feel especially stupid because they didn't even get all my transcripts until just now, so I could've waited to submit until today. Aaah!

mine still doesn't say true for mcat scores even though under status in tmdsas it says it has been received.., is this bad?

Okay, this actually happened to me last year. I submitted in May and found out in June that my paper had been accepted. I emailed TMDSAS and they said that if you send them a copy of the paper they can add it to your file. Otherwise it is just something good to talk about in an interview. Do you know when your paper will actually be published? Mine wasn't printed until November and I felt like it was a little late at that point to send to TMDSAS, but you bet I sent an email to every school.

Some schools don't officially accept updates once your app is in (Houston, I think? I could be wrong). But the way I think about it: Every time you call or email with new info, they have to pull your file out/up and that's another pair of eyes looking at it. Definitely send an update that it's been accepted and then another one (with a PDF) when it's printed.

I am not sure if this will help but I am in the same boat. The prof that I am doing research with also happens to be one of my recommenders. What he did was he added my publications on to my LOR from him. Maybe that'll help.

Thanks guys. I'll ask my PI to include the publication info in my letter.

Which schools send out emails after you submit the application?

I've only gotten one from SA...

I guess not having an MCAT score yet might have something to do with it, but I've only received e-mails from El Paso and TCOM so far. My app was transmitted to the schools two weeks ago.

I still havent received one from TTEP..... and I submitted 5/1

So far, every schools except for A&M, Lubbock, and Houston.

Strange. maybe we all have different definitions of what it means for them to send an email. Okay, I'll do this - I'll just write what the individual schools have emailed me.

San Antonio: "Thank you for your application to the University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio."
UTSW: "Thank you. Your Secondary Application has been successfully submitted"
A&M: After I got "true" on everything, I got this email: "We have a new form for you to fill out as part of your application process."

I haven't filled out TCOM's secondary yet. So that leaves UTMB, UT-Houston, TT-El Paso, and TT- Lubbock. For anyone wondering, I was transmitted last week and submitted my secondaries last week,as well.

UTMB: "Thank you for applying to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston..."
TCOM: "TMDSAS has notified us that your primary application is being sent to our office..." (pre-secondary)
After secondary: "We have received your submitted TCOM secondary application."

Along with all the emails with listed.

I haven't gotten anything from Lubbock and UTH

Same. I'm guessing I haven't received one from UTMB because I was transmitted last week, but I'm surprised I didn't get any receipt email form El Paso.

I think yall have the schools I received e-mails from covered.

Hopefully I can stop being lazy and finish up TCOMs secondary today.

Yes! And for all the neurotic pre-med (myself included). Don't despair if you don't get an II on these dates, we have all the way to December...haha

Your phone could ring at any moment bringing you wonderful life changing news. That's exciting!

SCX1, you are very correct. No need to despair if you don't get an interview right away. Many a med student didn't get a phone call in the first week of interviews.

They call you for interview invites? I thought they just email you.

Not sure about Lubbock and UTSW, but every other school just sends an email invite. UTSA allows you to choose your date from those available (mondays only), TTEP gives you a couple choices and I think A&M does too (can't remember exactly), and UTMB and UTH just email you a date.

Hey there! Does anyone else have to jet from El Paso to Galveston on 8/2-8/3?

I got so excited today to see an email form Med School Admissions.. thinking i got an II..

turns out it was an invitation to apply DO by LECOM -______-

lol gandalf, same thing here :/

Our time will come. I honestly think we wont hear back until mid to late august.

It seems that the majority of IIs went out to kids with 3.9-4.0s.

I think your numbers were similar to mine if I am not mistaken.

Are you guys talking about this piece of crap email?

Dear XXXXX,

I am contacting you because of your interest in entering the medical profession. If you have not yet done so, I encourage you to learn more about Osteopathic Medicine, the only American-born and fastest-growing form of medicine in the country. If you have already applied to LECOM, please disregard this message.

I wanted to reply and say "go f yourself"
