Wayne State Waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did they indicate if they would let you know generally where you stand on the list?

I asked that everytime I checked my status and the answer was always "sorry can't help you with that".

Your standing depends on the numerical vote of 25 committe members that is averaged and entered into the system. You basically get a score out of 3.0.

Wow, that is a lot of people, don't you wish you could interview with more than 1, it feels so impersonal.

Remember the interview is just one piece of the puzzle. There is alot more to your app and secondary.

Well I asked the interviewer, how does interviewing with only 1 committe member create a fair impression on the rest of the committee about your application. Basically only being able to influence 1 person out of the 25 committee members through face to face interaction is pretty pointless if the other 24 members are only going to decide by your paper application anyways.

The response I received was that after your interviewer presents you to the committee, generally they highly respect the judgements the interviewer made about your application and they follow closely with the grading the interviewer made.

However at that point if your interviewer sucks, you are screwed 25 times over.

Been lurkin around...I am on the alternate list as well.

Anyone get in contact with their interviewer post-int asking for any info? Mine did say that I could email her if I had questions. I did send her a letter of intent. For me, its either wsu or bust.

Hope next week brings some :luck: for all of us!

Edit: One more q...do they fill up all 260 seats (or whatever the new # is) by the end of the last call in date? If so, then according to the wsu's website, there were 712 total interviews, 260 matriculate, rumpunch said 200 are on the alternate list, hmm nevermind, I thought I was onto something

I did get in touch with my interviewer post interview. He onlyhad good things to say . That I will probably get in May-June and that he hopes to see me there next year. Who knows what that means

I'll drop an email to my interviewer too then, see what happens...will update.

I just called the office and I was told not to expect movement until the middle of June and the number of spots that could open range anywhere from zero to a hundred... I'm now even more worried!

When I called last week I was told the same thing. They seem to be very hush hush about the number of slots that have opened up and I think it depends on who answers the phone. One person said after Memorial Day, another says mid-June. I would go with the former only because I know that the lady that says mid-June is ( I believe) a college student, and the other woman is an actual Administrative Assistant who has been working there full time for a number of years.

now we really know they are trying 2 confuse us, because there is definitely NOT zero slots....we all know of at least a few people who have withdrawn...this is BS

I also heard/confirmed next week as the time when the waitlist is expected to move.

I agree that one of those ladies is a student and the other is an actual administrative person.

One of my friends who is a med student went into the office and they told her they will start accepting next week-- they haven't done it earlier because their power keeps going out and now they are backed up.

Mid-June is ridiculous. That is way later than any other school. They will have a hard time filling up their class if they wait that long.

I love the collaborative effort of this thread. 😀

Desperation makes people work together lol even when we are fighting for the same spots. 🙂

up to 100 spots sounds about right. If you compare, UofM usually pulls about 30-40 students off their waitlist for a class size of about 170. If you directly compare this to Wayne's class size (290) you get approx between 50 - 70 students to be taken off the waitlist. But you also have to take into account that there is a much more likely chance for a student to keep their offer at UofM than at Wayne, so that would statisically push the Wayne waitlist movement to about 100 students.

Numbers just make me relax for some reason. Here are some more....
Lets say approx 750 interviewed. They actually give out according to the Q&A session that I attended between 400-450 spots. so that leaves 300 people. Also according to the secretary, about 100-150 are rejected outright and the rest are put on the waitlist. So that leaves 150-200 students on the waitlist. So I would say that we still have about a 50% chance with getting off the waitlist if there was a 100 student movement.

For those of you whos only chance is Wayne, 50% isnt great. For those of you who are holding other spots at a different school, GO THERE, and leave Wayne for us! 😡

yeah, i'm just worried about the fact that my interview was in april, so i figured my shot wasn't as good to begin with. now that i hear about this waitlist situation, i'm even less confident. oh well.

Unlikely since there are enough people that would be thrilled to get in even if it happened during WSU's orientation week.

I will, once I get off their waitlist.

That's true. But from a "them" perspective they should really try to snag some of us early in the game.

I also like the collaborative effort of this thread. I think we are all very anxious to hear. I'm on the waitlist at both wayne and umich, and the waiting is becoming unbearable.

bagonnia said:

I know, but I'm sure that most of you will survive. Somehow I managed to survive multiple summers on alternate lists - including one where I was told that I was in the top half of a list of 51 (stupid school claimed in had no movement on its list that summer 😡 ) - obviously that wasn't at Wayne.

Besides it could be worse, enjoy your summer because it has to be tons better than the summer between second and third year (I am really getting sick of studying for boards)

Don't fret guys...It seems to be the consensus that Wayne interviews approximately 750 students. Wayne loves the number 3. Approximately 1/3 of all applicants are accepted outright, 1/3 rejected and 1/3 waitlisted. This amounts to about 250 people in each situation. However, this year there are 290 spots. Therefore that leaves about 200 people on the waitlist or if they decided to reject less people, about 220 waitlisted and 220 rejected. Every year 150 -180 students are eventually taken off of the waitlist. I know someone mentioned that 100 will be taken off most likely but this is still only the initial movement. Don't forget that some people on the waitlist are on other waitlists and may decline the offer if they get in somewhere else and also some people who have committed to Wayne are still on the waitlist for other schools. If it is towards the higher end this year and the waitlist is 200 students long, simple math would optimistically give you a 90% chance for admission. I know that nobody knows for sure but I think you all have a great chance! Good luck!

You guys have been saying that they are taking 290 students this year, which is huge. But during my interview I was told they are taking 300 students. I know that its only 10 more people, but in my eyes thats a lot, because it increases the percentage,s even if only by a little.

I think the remaining ten are from another program, MSTP or something. That is probably the discrepancy in numbers.

I am in the same ocean going vessel as most of y'all.

I already been accepted to one of my backup plans, i.e. the SMP program at University of Cincinni. (And if you haven't you guys might consider this option. Applications for Georgetown ain't due until June 1st, Tulane June 9th, and Drexel July 1st?, so there is still time!)

I am a procrastinator and I didn't apply until late in the cycle, both times. 😎 Last year, I was told in an email that there were only 6 interview spots left and even if I got my LOR into them in the next 24 hours they doubted I would get an interview. I was quite shocked when I actually landed an interview, and then was a bit too optimistic about my waitlist status and didn't start my 2006 AAMC until August when I was officially rejected. Silly me. So you all take heed from this and start and submit your AAMC now. 😉

Oh yeah, start trying for those positions you always wished you would do if you had time for when you were in school, just in case you don't get in. Like join the Peace Core or the American Red Cross or something.

So now, I am rather pessimistic about my chances of getting in. Actually my mind set is that I didn't get in. So it makes me happy to hear that they haven't had their waitlist movement yet, as I had expected them too.

Oh and yeah, I have had it suggested to me that I call them and ask what my weaknesses were. I haven't had the balls yet to do so. Have any of you guys done this? Should I ask my interviewer? Should I just ask the AA staff?

According to what Dawn Street told me on the phone, they will not discuss the problems with your application until a final decision has been made.

Anyway, the way you go about doing that is you call the admissions office and ask to schedule an appointment to speak with the Dean of Admissions about how you can strengthen your application. That appointment can be in person or over the phone.

Yes, that is true. However, as I said, Dawn Street specifically told me "the Dean will not meet with anyone until a final decision on your application has been made."

I was also told they won't discuss it until you have been officially rejected.

I feel like I may be too optimistic about my waitlist status. I hope this week is a good one-- but then again I say that every week. Hopefully we see some movement now and not mid-June.

someone earlier said something about 90% chance of getting in off the waitlist...this is seemingly good news, but i always tend to think about the 10%, since i've been part of that 10% all my life (in terms of admissions, anyway). it sucks to be part of that group

I've always been a pessimist, which is why I am expecting to be rejected. And then, if I reapply this year, I'll be rejected again. However, I don't let these thoughts consume me! I am wrong... a lot of the time, haha.

Yeah, by Mid-June I will have laid out close to $1000 smacks to hold my spot in a SMP and in new AAMC applications. Sooner is much better than later. Mah.

Heck yes!

If I had to lose money by pulling out of my SMP at the last second, break a lease and move across country and set up shop back in Michigan in a matter of days, I would if I got pulled off the waitlist Orientation week.

bump.

I'm calling tomorrow morning to see when they anticipate movement now. Trying to keep this thread alive. Post if you have any new info!

I was just about to post to do the same thing. Hopefully tomorrow someone hears something so we at least KNOW it's moving!! (I have begun doing AMCAS for this year - it seems all of my info is already in it and I just need to update it or hit complete)

random question, but when you guys call do you give them ur name/amcas number or is just an anonymous call?

just anonymous. I call and ask them when they anticipate movement on their waitlist for this years upcoming class and then they give me whatever answer they like.

I've always said my name. But, I might call anonymously tomorrow.

waitlist movement: "earliest is the end of this week or early next week."

i always forget to ask how many spots there are. maybe someone else can ask?

Are they usually nice to you? They have been rude to me in the past and it makes me not want to call back, but if nothing happens soon, I will call and share what info they give me.

I admit that I do get nervous each time I call, but I find that the less I say the less likely they are to be rude. Plus, they don't know my name so its not like they can remember. Although I'm beginning to wonder if I should mention my name, but I'm not sure how much that matters or how I could play that in to my question.

Hope that helps.

I just called and asked when they would expect movement. She told me, whenever spots open up. As of now, they have already made offers to two students and the class is currently filled. 🙁

Wow. That is nearly impossible. Only two students dropped spots? I feel like that is a huge lie. I am so confused, how can their class be full?

bagonnia said:

I am so confused, too. But, that is what she told me. It sounded totally opposite to what you had posted. I don't get it and it's making me angry. They should have a website where they post updates as to what is going on. It's getting more and more ridiculous. After what she told me, I feel like I have absolutely no chance.

Well I just called again and she told me the same thing. That is RIDICULOUS. She is the one who had originally told me that the waitlist would move at the end of this week or early next week.

Either way, something really fishy is going on because there is no way that only two people withdrew, and I'm pretty sure they did not over accept during the year.

I also feel like I have no chance. What happened to them having a ton of waitlist movement?

Wow, you guys work fast in the morning. 😱

What did you guys do call directly at 9 AM EDT?

I am hoping that their information is just coming from disgruntled office workers who are upset about answering the phone a lot of times in the morning.

Good Luck to all of us. :luck:

I also hope that they are just saying those things just to stop us from calling. Im holding on to faith right now and hopefully PistonMD was right about the 90%. :luck:

I hope so because it isn't sounding too great right now. ;[

Does anyone know if they overaccept? I thougt that pre-May 15th they only accepted enough to fill their class.

If this is true, then they have to be just telling us all this garbage because they haven't caught up on their paperwork.

I am thinking about going there to talk to someone. What do you guys think.

I think the 90% is a gross approximation.

Looking at last years data, you only have a 43% chance of getting in if you interveiwed. Now of course that number does not include the number of people they made offers to that then didn't accept those offers.

However, what those numbers are seem to be a big mystery.

I think in person will have a much better chance of success then over the phone, because then the only way they can get you out of the office is either give you some feedback, or call security.

But I would be EXTREMELY nice, polite, paitent and maybe bring them a basket of goodies from Zingerman's because you know how over worked they are.

I would even chip in.

When I interviewed there, my tour guides assured me that a large part of the class was taken off the waitlist last year. How large, who knows. I think they are giving you the play by play as far as how many spots open and then get closed out.

Sit tight. Its a rough ride.

By the way, that 90% approximation of chances is too high. I think its half that.
