Just wanted to get this one started for this fine institution! I have heard it won't be out for a couple more weeks. But we can talk about Howard until then. God bless.

Hi, I'm applying to Howard. I love the DC area. Does anyone know if they send secondaries without MCAT scores? I'm taking the 8/7 MCAT and will be verified by mid-August but won't MCAT scores until Sept.
Thanks!

They do send secondaries without a mcat score. They just won't make any decisions until they get you mcat score. I love DC as well. I really want to go to Howard!

Great! That will help me out a lot actually if they do so! Thanks for your reply. Have you visited the campus at all? I've been to DC a few times and visited a friend at GWU. I'd love to plan a weekend trip down there and check out Howard's campus at some point. I'm mostly interested in working at free clinics, which I'm sure DC offers a lot of so it would be the perfect location for me!

I received an email saying that the secondary would be available around the middle of September because they are moving the admissions office into a new building. Just wanted to keep everyone updated.

is DC that good? Maybe I should apply then to howard. How safe is it compared to JHU/UChicago?

Got the same email. I think it's good that's one less secondary to worry about now and gives us time to catch up.

You have to remember that all of these schools are in big cities, therefore there are good parts and bad parts. From my experience, I would say that Howard is located in a better part of DC compared with where JHU and UChicago are located within their respective cities.

I went to JHU undergrad and currently work at Hopkins Hospital, therefore I am very familiar with the area. The hospital is located in a terrible part of the city, however most students either live within the hospital area or in better parts of the city like Mount Vernon and Charles Village (Hopkins has a free shuttle system).

As far as UChicago goes, I believe that their undergrad campus is located on the south side of the city. This is notoriously a bad part of Chicago. Therefore if the med school is located there too, then it would not be the best area.

I do not know the exact location of Howard in D.C., but I do know that the public transportation in D.C. is great. Therefore you could live almost anywhere in D.C. and commute to the campus in under 45 mins. I cannot imagine it being in a worse area than JHu or UChicago though.

Hope this helps, it is everything that I know about these areas.

I agree except for the fact that Howard's secondary traditionally does not have any essays. Therefore it is very easy to complete in about 5 mins (or however long it takes you to write a check and lick a stamp). I like these secondaries the most.

UChicago (undergrad and med school) is in Hyde Park, which despite being on the South Side is actually very nice. It's definitely a more residential area, but it has a lot of diversity and feels quite safe. Hey, if it's good enough for Barack Obama and his family, it's good enough for me! 👍

...just don't stray too far north, south, or west of the neighborhood...

I got a secondary today...
------------
Oops, thought it was a secondary. Upon reading it fully, it is the same as what others got. I apologize.

I have no clue. You could search the previous years' threads to see what people say on there. Sending out the secondary that late, I can imagine that everyone will get it within a few days. Since it is jsut a form to attach a check to (traditionally), they will probably just send an email to everyone that applied with the form attached (my guess)???

They send it out, to everybody who is verified, in an email that has the address to get you to the secondary. I don't think they do it in batches. We all got this past email at the same time. God bless!

Good luck to all applying!

I don't have much volunteer experience in serving under served or inner city. I am Indian by race (if you can call it that) and do not come from a disadvantaged background. So, should I even bother applying to Howard? I don't want to waste my $$$.

Thanks!!

Hello Everyone! I'm just wondering if it is standard and automatic for Howard to send its secondary apps.? I received my notification today and am excited. I ask because the Texas medical schools do not invite you to complete a secondary application, you just do it. I understand that Howard reviews our AMCAS apps first, but is it possible to not receive a secondary application invite from them? I'm just wondering. Thanks.

STOP HARASSING THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE, GUYS!!!

That follow-up e-mail was hilarious. Poor folks are probably swamped.

@Deepa100, I don't think you should apply b/c Howard's mission statement is provide opportunties for minority-URM physicians and/or students who want to provide care for the underserved communities. Since you don't have anything in your application that shows this committment, I think you should save your money. Good luck though if you do decide to apply! :luck:

@Roberick, Howard sends a secondary to everyone who designates the school on their primary (according to the Howard website) so no screening process was used pre-secondary.

So if I'm not a minority and I haven't already done work in underserved areas, I shouldn't bother applying? How much do they take the minority individuals into account?

Well, I wouldn't say that you *shouldn't* bother applying...but how do you expect the Ad Comm to truly believe that you will do future work with underserved populations if you haven't already done it? 😕

I don't know how much they take it into account, but here's the mission statement:

Howard Mission Statement

Howard University College of Medicine provides students of high academic potential with a medical education of exceptional quality and prepares physicians and other health care professionals to serve the underserved. Particular focus is on the education of disadvantaged students for careers in medicine. Emphasis is placed on developing skills and habits of life-long learning and producing world leaders in medicine. Special attention is directed to teaching and research activities that address health care disparities.
The College also seeks to improve the health of Americans and the global community through public health training programs and initiatives. Our mission also includes the discovery of new knowledge through research. Lastly, the College supports the education and training of postgraduate physicians, other health care providers, and graduate students in the biomedical sciences.

I don't have a #1 school (the cheapest perhaps?), but I pray that you get in. 😍

Thanks MsKrispyKreme! I greatly appreciate that. Which is the cheapest for you?

Probably a state school, but I'm hoping I get an acceptance/scholarship out-of-state. :scared:

Of course curriculum is important...and whichever school has the sexiest guys. 😎

To be completely honest, this process is so random (check out the Pritzker thread), I just hope I get an acceptance anywhere.

Yay for howard secondary! so no real essays for this secondary right? I've read so many I just want to make sure I don't miss anything

there arent any essays-but you can write a line or two about your experience/volunteer/work with underserved individuals. its really a simple secondary. thankfully!

Seriously. 😀

How long is it taking ya'll to be complete at Howard?

Hey Cuyahoga! You are the freakin BOMB!!!!! You aren't gonna need any luck in this process. Congrats on having awesome stats! Just make sure when you get an interview invite from Howard, put in a good word for me! LOL, God bless!

Sent it in same day as it was released. Quick turnaround
priority email.2-3 days

They don't screen correct? Everyone gets a secondary? I was just verified through AMCAS yesterday and want to get started on this secondary asap, especially if I'll automatically receive one. Thanks!

I sent mine out the day after it was released. To be fair...I'm in graduate school at Howard and could have walked it over. But they moved the admissions offices to I don't know where, so I mailed it from Arlington. Either way, I got an email saying it was received on Sept 2nd. They won't verify receipt of letters unless you're offered an interview.

I'm also a graduate student. Does anyone know if the two science recommendation letters have to come from the undergraduate faculty, or is it okay if one/both of them are from my graduate profs?

Mine hasn't been received yet. I sent it off last saturday. Maybe next week I will get the email. I wonder how long after the email do they start inviting?

So why do you want to serve the under-served? just wanted to know what people's motivation are.

Can I ask why you want to? Not being being a smart a** or anything.
