I have no idea exactly how the waitlist ranking works, but I know the adcom meets again on May 16th, which is when they start making phone calls. So if you haven't gotten your updates/LOI/bribery gift into the office yet, do it now!

Burnsie... come on.

Someone said that Richard Wallace said that we can see the waitlist on May 15th, although no one specified whether or not it was the ranked waitlist.

hmm... well, you know what they say about hearsay... it's inadmissible in a court of law 😀

Holy freakin moly!!!!!!!!

Do you think it's still worth sending in a LOI? I thought I read in this thread that there wasn't much point in it (because the waitlist is already ranked?). I don't really have anything phenomenal to add, maybe just a couple honor societies I got inducted into.

I think if Duke is really where you want to go, then sending in a LOI can't hurt even if the list is ranked. Even just from doing research here, I get the impression that Duke is the type of place that likes to know you are interested in them so you should write a LOI just to express your interest even if not a lot has changed in your application. Just my two cents...:luck:

Burnsie... come on.
I know it's hard to believe, but not everyone is as awesome as you. 🙂

Edit: So I put the 🙂 on there so you would know I wasn't being sarcastic, but now it just looks like I'm hitting on you. So, instead, I'll change it to:

well as long as we're making this thread awkward, I'll go ahead and say FCD is attractive.

Burnsie... is there something you need to tell me??? :meanie:

JK... you know there is a special place in my heart for you 😍 Now it seems like I'm hitting on you doesn't it... this is not good. Just for the record I am not hitting on MrBurns 👍

You know this could all be cured by Duke simply letting me in on May 16th so I can meet all you Dukies in person. (lol... the term "dukies" is funny if you think about it with a 2nd grade mindset... which is what I have right now during finals... OK back to studying)

sheesh, you two. Get a room!

 (smiley denoting fondness)

Erm.

:barf:

Burnsie, no bringing FMD to the next tequila party. We all know what happens at those!

And, on a somewhat related note, HAPPY CINCO DE CERVEZA! (and national make-out day)

How did I suddenly become the Duke c/o 2010 gigalo??? 😛

Maybe cuz I dance like this...

Frenchies Make Dinner? Fairies Mingle Delightfully? Flatulence Means Diarrhea? Flunking Maybe Disasterous? Fantastic Minty Delicacies?

I hope everyone had a great Drinko de Mayo.

10 days!!! (HOLY CRAP!)

:luck: :luck: :luck:

Duke. :biglove: Of course, we all knew that months ago.

Quick question for the M1's, though, about how I go about appealing my financial aid award. It's actually pretty generous, but it's still slightly more expensive than my other options. Any thoughts on how I should go about my appeal? Like, "So, these other schools are going to be a little cheaper for me to attend... is there anything you can do for me?"

EEEEEE!!! Decision made!!! In celebration, I'm going to go make some dark chocolate brownies and procrastinate some more.

Congrats, Embellis! Hope to see you next year :luck: 😍 :luck:

Phhhwaaauugh, dark chocolate brownies. Mmmmmmmmmmmm. If they are homemade, I may require a small donation upon your arrival in Durham. I will be on OB/Gyn and will not be happy about it. *shudder* Ugh, meconium.

Ok, so I renegotiated my FA package when I came in. My parents sent a letter and I called the financial aid office a few days later to follow up on their letter and to tell them about my little bargaining chip: a full tuition scholarship to the other tobacco-road rival. I'm not sure how big of a bargaining chip it really was (since it only got me an extra $4k) but it helped a little. My grant from 2.3% to about 10%. This year it went back down to about 7% but I'm not really in the mood to argue any more since I'm well well well in the hole as it is and another $2k won't make THAT much of a difference when the chips are down.

However, upon entry to a school renegotiation is worth a shot, in any case, I think.

Yay! Looking forward to seeing you here in late July!

You got your finaid already? Damn, I can't wait to see mine...

Ick, I don't care if it really is the "miracle of life" (did you guys ever watch that video in sex ed in high school?). The miracle of life looks pretty slimy/gross, if you ask me.

And, if by "homemade," you mean "made in my home from a box," then sure. 🙂 I used to make them from scratch but 1) it takes too long, and 2) sometimes, it's better not to know exactly how much butter and sugar goes into these things. Although, I suppose I didn't really help the latter by putting in 1/4 cup of chocolate syrup and then eating the brownies with ice cream. Oh well, it's the end of the year and we need to clean out as much stuff in the fridge and pantry as possible. That means that we have a constant supply of cookies in the apartment, and that tomorrow is Jell-O no bake cheesecake, Tuesday is flan, and Wednesday is pumpkin pie (but I'm not making that one). Maybe crepes later in the week. If I'm lucky, I can get my friend to make creme brulee.

Oh how I hope you're one of those med students who decides to change residence every single year. 😀 "WOO! She's MOVING AGAIN! Break out the forks and bowls and someone go buy some moose tracks!"

:horns: :hardy:  It's official, I'm gonna be a Blue Devil! :hardy: :horns:

Congrats on making your decision! Duke is a GREAT school and getting that full scholarship is just WOW! I guess we're swapping schools 🙂. You'll soon get to experience the forest that is Durham haha. It's not THAT bad though...you'll enjoy it but will probably want to get out of there in 4 years like me. Congrats again!

sent in my LOI just now!
also my congratulations to durden, embellis, and stolen!

I'm such an idiot. I typed up my letter of intent earlier today and then jotted a quick email to Richard Wallace.... but I forgot to attach the LOI!

doh!

If I had a dollar for every time I did that...!

Ya... common mistake... I do that at least once a month. Don't sweat it.

8 days.

:luck: :luck: :luck:

Thanks for all the support! It's going to be an awesome class next year!

Though now that the second-guessing is done for all of us, it's time to focus on what really matters: the countdown!

:luck: :luck: :luck:

guess i wasn't the only person sending in a LOI yesterday! 😛

Hey guys:

Can someone tell me what I need to do to withdraw my acceptance? Do I have to write a letter? Or can it be a call or email?

I read on some other threads that email is OK. I'm sure you could just email good ole RW and find out. Good luck next year. Where did you end up deciding on???

Not Duke. Still up in the air on the other places.

I would say that the best advice I got on going to medical school was not to let cost be an important factor in picking a school. It's not like you're going to be paying off debt for the rest of your life, and education should be considered an investment. If you like Duke, you should just come and not try to leverage for more money. That makes you a whiner. If you're really looking for a bargain, try here: http://www.amazon.com/Med-School-Box-Prestige-Fraction/dp/1594741476

a whiner with less debt...

i would ask the financial aid office about this, i feel like our office does a good job of pushing around numbers to increase the school of medicine grant money. i mean... i increased my grant by a few grand just by talking to them this year. see where it gets you 🙂 also, a certain member of my class would know more about increasing their scholarship money, but i'm not going to point fingers unless they want to talk about it themselves.
