Cornell Class of 2014!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's an incredible feeling, that we have been accepted to one of the best vet schools in the country. I can't wait to meet all my future classmates!

Hey everyone! I'm still so happy, I cant stop smiling.

i'll see you all there! i still dont think it has actually hit me. 😍

I keep re-reading my acceptance letter just to make sure the words haven't magically shifted or something! Gaah!! PS: I'm going to the first info session. When are ya'll going?

I would just like to say congratulations to all of you accepted to Cornell b/c it's not only an incredible achievement to receive the acceptance but you all submitted a recommendation from every single experience you documented on your application. 😉 heard that was a rough for some. 🙂

Congrats!!! I'm so proud of you all.

Me too! Any ideas on when it will start on Friday and end on Saturday?

My guess is that it'll start on Friday and there will be a continuation on Saturday.

Haha, just thinking about travel plans. Hopefully they will send the stuff back soon so I can get my tickets!

I just emailed Jennifer Mailey about what times it would start/finish so I could look at plane tickets. She sent this back

The Information Sessions are typically 9:00am-5:00pm on the Fridays and 9:00am-10:30am on the Saturdays. We will send out a tentative agenda with the confirmation emails when you register.

I think I am going to try and go to the first one or the second one. I am suppose to be defending my PhD at the end of Feb, so I like the last one might be a little to crazy.

Just poking my head in to say WOOOO CORNELL 2014!!!....that is all 😀

Congrats to everyone! I'm so excited for this fall. I'm going to the Feb 19 and 20th information sessions. I feel like it won't actually hit me until I visit the school. I cannot wait 🙂

Hi everyone! I was accepted to Cornell (IS) as well, and although I haven't made a solid decision yet, it's very likely that I will be going there for financial reasons. I'm having a bit of a hard time because Penn is my top choice and I just had a GREAT interview there today, but if I get in there it's going to be very hard to justify the extra cost (especially considering the amount of money I ALREADY owe in student loans). I feel like a crazy person for not doing backflips over Cornell (I AM really excited about my acceptance though, I promise!!!), it's just that I'm in love with Penn (was a grad student there once already) and think it might be a bit of a better fit for my interests... but $$$$ suckssss. Maybe I won't even get into Penn and the point will be moot. 😛

Anyway, I'll stop moaning, and I do invite you all to woo me into being more excited about Cornell!! I am definitely planning on attending one of the open houses, just not sure which one yet since it will mean missing an embryology lab AND a day of work (ahh $$$ again!).

HOORAYYY!!!! I have been reading these forums on SDN for a while now (and freaking out!) but I have never posted anything before...I am so happy to have this be my first post!!! Congrats on everyone who got accepted and I can't wait to meet everyone at one of the info sessions!!!:soexcited:

I feel so lame cause I haven't really "celebrated" this weekend. I mean I went out for dinner and a drink with my best friend the night I got in but that's about it. I feel like I should get roaring drunk, but I just haven't. I guess I have 7 months to do that... Also, all my body seems to want to do lately is sleep as if this whole application process drained every cell in my body and now that I got into vet school my body is trying to regain it's energy lol.

I havent really celebrated either. Just dinner with family and I dont drink so that's not an options...although I did consider it lol. I feel exactly the same with regaining sleep and de-stressing. This process drove me crazy.

I was at my lab animal internship at the time, so all the vets decided to treat me to some food and drinks, couldn't turn that down! I'm also not a big drinker or a crazy partier for that matter, but I do drink when i'm out with close friends. After that I helped my friend move into her new apartment (thrilling!) and spent the night watching random movies on tv. Simple, but satisfying 😀. I'm having the opposite problem though, I havent slept well in the past few days...probably since I can't stop thinking about all the cool things I get to do once in vet school! Eh, ill calm done...or crash.

Yeah, I've been sleeping a lot but it's been restless sleep because I'm so damn excited.

Congratulations to all of you! I'm a bit jealous as well. Even though I ultimately chose Davis, I printed my Cornell acceptance letter and will keep it forever. 😉

just dropping by to say CONGRATULATIONS everyone! i look forward to meeting you guys at one of the info sessions! :soexcited: i still think i must be dreaming!

I'm in the EXACT same situation! I have been accepted to Tufts and Penn as well, and I feel like I would like them better than Cornell, buttttt $60K is so much money!! Maybe I'll feel differently after the first open house - I hope I love it and won't have to worry about it!

Out of curiosity, why are you feeling that way about Penn and Tufts over Cornell? I ask because I'm accepted to Cornell but I have an interview at Tufts. I never thought I'd get into Cornell for some reason, and I had thought that I REALLY wanted to go to Tufts - I went there for undergrad, spent a week at the vet school for Tufts' AVM program and kind of bonded with the campus. Plus they have a kick-ass international program.

I don't know why I'm feeling so iffy about Cornell though! It's the #1 school in the country, I have a good friend who will be in his 4th year when I start (and who has been telling me all sorts of good things about going there), Ithaca is way better than Grafton, and it's IS for me so the price is better. So I have no clue why I keep thinking this will be such a hard choice if I do get into Tufts. Like you, I'm hoping that the info session will change my mind. I toured campus once but it was in June and I don't remember everything about it.

I don't understand myself though...I finally get into vet school and I'm this torn? Gah...

Edited to say that this makes it seem like I'm not excited about Cornell, but I totally am. 🙂 I guess I just waver between being like "OMG EEEEEEEEEEEEE, CORNELL!!!!" and the voice in the back of my head that goes, "but....what about Tufts?" But mostly it's the first one. (Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!)

I got my official acceptance letter in the mail today. I'm so gonna frame it. 😀 I'm so excited to be returning to my alma mater. It's what gets me through each day, especially since this week at work is really frustrating.

Hmn, it's hard to explain exactly. I would be much closer to my parents at Tufts (though I'm a NY resident now), and I just got such a good feeling when I was there. They also have some curriculum stuff I like a lot - the selectives, their lab animal and research programs, etc. And I do like their International program very much. The interview day at Tufts is SO nice, so that probably won't make it much easier for you to decide!

For Penn, unfortunately a lot of it is about the name. I work in a very high-level research lab with incredibly smart people, and as a research institution, Penn definitely has the best name and they are all pressuring me to go there. I don't think that would be enough to make me do it, but I also love living in a city and liked Philly a lot.

I know almost NOTHING about Cornell though. I just applied because it was my in-state and someone at Penn told me I would be silly not to! So I guess I have a lot to learn about the school, and hopefully my financial and non-financial desires will line up!

This scares me (in a good way, of course)... I'm on the fence about whether to accept or decline my invitation to interview at Tufts. I'd really love to see the school and learn more about it, but since I'm already having so much trouble with Penn vs. Cornell, would interviewing at Tufts be a horrible horrible idea? Waaaa.... 😕

I say go for it! I loved Tufts campus as well as their various signature programs, so its going to be a tough decision for me to choose between them and Cornell. On top of that, I've got a Upenn interview on Friday which I figure I'll go to just because I've never been there before...perhaps ill be pleasantly surprised! 😀 The next few months will be interesting to say the least. Who knows, maybe Tufts will blow the other schools out of the water for you. Never know until you try! Good luck with your decisions! Either way, you're going to vet school, woo!!😀

I wish I had your problem! I just want to be accepted somewhere 🙂 Good luck with choosing a school! You will probably do great and be happy no matter where you choose to go 🙂👍

Has anyone RSVPed to an info session and received a timeline?

Well, its official...I'm coming up to Ithaca on Feb 5/6 for the information session! See ya there absvet and everyone else attending on that date! I just sent in my RSVP, so I haven't heard anything back yet, but i'll let you know what happens.

Has anyone RSVPed to an info session and received a timeline?

I RSVP'd before Monday and haven't received a timeline. They probably won't be sent out for about a week or so. The RSVP's aren't due until Jan 25th.

Got my fin aid info package in the mail. So not looking forward to filling out the fafsa/css profile again. 🙁 But happy that I have to at the same time 🙂

Does anyone know if current vet students live near each other / live near the school? Or is it that all the students are dispersed? I know that theres "College Town" where all the undergrads live, but I'm guessing that the grad students don't want to live near all the parties and noise. Thanks 🙂

Most of the vet students live near the school and with each other. But there are vet students that are far (if they have a car). I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to live now myself. Central Collegetown is noisy, but lower Collegetown isn't too bad.

Do you know the average rent of either area for living alone or with a roommate?

Central collegetown is pretty pricey, say over $800 alone and a little less if you're living with someone and splitting the rent. Lower collegetown is cheaper being about $500 alone and less with people. You basically pay for convenience in terms of collegetown and lower collegetown is further away from all the stores and bars and buses so it's cheaper compared to central collegetown.

So do you think it's not necessary to have a car in Ithaca? I kind of assumed I would need one...

For those of you debating your options I feel you pain. I go into cornell off the waitlist and had 48 hours to decide (I had already deposited at Tufts). Feel free to PM me if you want more info.

It's not absolutely necessary to have a car in Ithaca (I probably won't have one until my 3rd or 4th year for rotations). However, if you can get one then it makes life much easier and you can live further away from campus, which means cheaper rent.

Hello everyone...

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I couldn't seem to find it. What is the attire like at the info sessions? I don't know if I should suit up or not given there will not be an interviews. Just wanted your guy's opinion.

BTW..I will be attending the Feb 26/27 info session. Hope to see some of you there!

I'm attending the Feb 5/6 session, and I definitely do not plan on wearing my suit (although I'll have it with me - going straight to Cornell from my Tufts interview!). I honestly wasn't planning on getting any more "dressed up" than I would on a normal day - nice jeans, casual sweater, comfortable shoes. Should I rethink this? I have nicer khakis but tend to not be as comfortable in them...

good question ColoGirl! i was wondering the same thing. but i'm going to go with nice jeans and a sweater too -- just want to keep warm! i'll be at the feb 26/27 session also! 🙂

Excellent. I didn't think we would need to be super dressed up, but just wanted to make sure. I can't wait to visit. I have never been to Ithaca so it will be an adventure!!

I'm attending the Feb 5/6 one too! Ithaca is a pretty cool place, from what I saw (I was up there a few times during an internship). It just seems like a down to earth college town with some pretty parks and falls. Maybe i'll enjoy it after years of being in a big city, guess ill find out. Cant wait to meet everyone!
