Anyone else applying?

I am from the main land applying to SJB, but my Spanish has become rusty lately... It's been some years since I have not had a long conversation in Spanish... I have 3.15 cGPA, 3.35sGPA and expecting a 26+ MCAT based on my last practice test (27).

Nice. Are you applying to the others as well?

my kaplan instructor is an MS-1 here. he seemed to really like the school.

Well, my instructor wasn't even hispanic, he was like arab or something.

Well, I call admissions today and was told they would be sending out emails in august saying they have received your application, and interview invites in october.

August is almost over, has anyone received any e-mails from this school?

Nothing yet! I'm mailing my last LOR today and I've already paid the $100 fee.

I received an e-mail from them today. Finally.

Me too. I called and was told they have received everything and I owe them nothing. Now just sitting and waiting. First interviews are mid october, Jaymi said.

Should I apply with my mcat score 9/4/9? I feel like that 4 in VR is lethal....

Im not sure if they have any minimums for sections. Apply anyway. My friend got in with a 19, and he applied late in september. so go for it!

Is your friend in-state? I am from the mainland... How is the secondary prompt?

How do I submit my LORs? My schools Pre-professional Health office has my LORs....I have to tell the them to submit the LORs to the schools I am applying to... Will SJB and UCC accept the LORs that way... I see you can assign LORs to the schools... How do I do that? Do I have to?

There are no secondaries.

I submitted my LOR's through the mail. You don't have to assign the letters on amcas.

Yeah, my friend is in-state, he must have had excellent EC's.

Hi everyone,

I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question but is SJB welcoming of applications from non-Hispanic applicants with Spanish fluency? I'm a New York applicant with a non-traditional background. I really would like to be able to do clinicals etc in Spanish. This year I will be living and volunteering at an orphanage in Guatemala. If they aren't open to it then I'd rather not spend money on the primary and secondary apps. I'm also inquiring in the school-specific threads of the other two private schools on the island. From what I understand, the public school is not open to applicants without strong ties.

My stats are 3.35c/3.7bcpm/3.74postbac/30S MCAT(9P,12V,9B).

Thanks so much.

According to the 2011 MSAR, SJB and UCC take few non-Hispanic OOS applicants... Your stats are excellent for both of them... UPR take no OOS applicants... Not too sure about Ponce since I never take a look at it...

Thanks so much for the response. Do you mind if I get clarification on something you said? When you said they take few non-Hispanic OOS applicants, did you mean it is worth me applying or no? Also, do you know if they require the 12 Spanish credits before applying or if it is okay to finish them this spring and let the school know of my plans. I ask because I have 9 of the 12 required credits. Thanks!

When I said few, I meant not a lot... According to the 2011 MSAR, they received 860 applications from which they accepted 63.... Out of that 63, 28 was non-resident(OOS) and 7 of them were non-Hispanics (1 Chinese, 2 Asian Indians and 4 African Americans)... For the Spanish credits, you can add in the application classes that you are planning to take... That is what I did... I only have 4 Spanish credits and I add that I plan to take more classes or CLEP Spanish...There seems to be a confusion in the amount of Spanish credits that SJB requires because I remember seeing 12-credit hour on their website but the 2011 MSAR said they only require 2 semesters, which can be 6-8 credits depending on the school.

hello anyone know the tuition fee or cost for each year at san juan bautista school of medicine?

We should be getting interview invites soon! At least if you're a resident, don't know about OOS.

Greetings, I'm currently MS-I at SJB and want to let you all know that you can PM me/reply if you have any questions regarding this school. Good luck!

Hello Md456, which were your scores when you applied to San Juan Bautista Medical School, and how where the interview. did you do any research or volunteer job?

well, I applied with a 3.7 sGPA and an MCAT in the lower 20's. Since spanish is my first language, the MCAT was a big issue for me. As far as research I had some experience working with cancer. I also volunteered every other saturday at a free clinic during my premed years.
My first impression when i had my interview was that there was a strong sense of comradery and a very nice hospital and campus. Also, I liked the fact that tests are customized NBME exams (former USMLE questions), they have a system-based curriculum and you will have visiting professors that are specialized in such topic. Facilities are clean, comfortable, SAFE (closed campus with 24 hr guards) and students and admin are very friendly. I was also interviewed/accepted at ponce and UCC, but decided to attend SJB because they do not have NBME based examinations, no system-based curriculum, no auditoriums and the location within the island. I understand that the LCME issue plays a key factor in the decision process but I will assure you that the school has never been better (brand new hospital?)

Hoping to get some love from SJB with my low MCAT score... I am praying GOD to get an ii so I can show them my passion for medicine.... I am falling in love with the school.

@Temperature101

Just so you know, people in PR tend to look down at this school. It moved to Caguas recently, it used to be in pretty bad shape and provided lousy service, the school had it's accreditation removed and this year gets it officially back. Now it is under the management of Menonita, which have other hospitals in Puerto Rico all of which are excellent, they don't have the same technology as the state run hospitals, but the state run hospitals service sucks. The hospital has been remodeled and the service has gone up a notch, a lot better than Caguas' other hospital and keeps getting better by the day. I won't go into much detail why a lot of students from PR look down on it, I just don't wan't you to feel strange if you ever encounter that. Also that tuition which you mentioned is per semester not year, and it is a little bit higher.

Thanks for letting me know... I applied there because I heard a lot of good stuff about the school and I would love to go to school there regardless of how other people see the school... Regarding the tuition: That number comes from the 2011-2012 MSAR... It is strange that number is per semester for SJB because the MSAR reported tuition is per year for all the other schools.

I apologize beforehand but I found your post somewhat confusing. SJB medical center was not the same as the school, there were completely separate entities. The hospital filed for bankruptcy and that's why the accreditation was revoked (the LCME was worried that students were not being exposed to adequate clinical rotations), however, SJBSOM had (and currently has) more affiliated clinical centers other than SJB medical center. That is why SJBSOM sued the LCME, because the revocation was unfair. Consequently, SJBSOM lost the trust of some people. Nevertheless, I assure you that we at SJBSOM are working very hard to regain the trust and prestige and we're actually achieving it. Compared to other schools, our curriculum is better, competition among students is waaay more fair (only PR school with NBME tests) and the LCME revocation was not as embarrasing or humiliating than... well.. you know... other PR med schools. Regarding tuition, I paid 15500 (as a non-resident) plus approx. 4200 (resources, facilities, medical insurance, id, infrastructure fee, civil responability fee etc..) for the fall semester. Yearly cost is 31,000 for non-residents and 23,500 for PR residents.

Greetings,

Like md456, I am also an MS-1 at SJB with similar stats, I was also interviewed/accepted at Ponce and UCC, but decided to attend SJB. The only difference between myself and md456 is that I'm from the states, not Puerto Rico.

Feel free to PM me or ask me any questions in the public forum.I understand how stressful applying to medical school is and I would be more than happy to help you all.

What was your reasoning in the selection process? Why SJB over UCC and Ponce? I understand the education is on par with the rest of the schools in PR but the prestige of the institution has been severely affected by the recent accreditation issues. I'm a mainland student and have SJB as my last choice, because of location and prestige. However, two close friends currently attend there and they couldn't be happier.

DrOne,

I chose SJB over UCC and Ponce because it was actual my first choice. UCC didn't have anything that "wowed" me and I didn't like the way Ponce treated their students (they seem to care more about how you look on paper than how you actual are). What really made me want to attend SJB was their NBME examinations, I feel like I am being better prepared for the USMLE than if I had went to another school where the teachers make the exam. The level of knowledge that is required for us to pass the exam is extensive, so it forces us to study more and gets us used to the types of questions the USMLE might asked us. The sense of comradery amongst students and staff was also a big plus (trust me, you'll want to be surrounded by caring people during the first two years of medical school).

In regards to their prestige, I really didn't care about it. It doesn't matter which LCME medical school you attend, what matters is how well you do at that medical school. I know for a fact that SJB doesn't want the LCME to withdraw it's accreditation again, so they're doing all that is possible to get off probation. However, if SJB is your last choice, than please focus your attention on Ponce and UCC, leave your spot open to students who actually wants to come here.

If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask me.

Ions
