94 on boards. my school doesn't rank (unless you're in the top 5 or something like that), i know for sure my class rank was not in top 5%. to all those that didn't match, keep persevering, there's light at the end. i'll provide some perspective here. i didn't apply right after graduation, b/c i know my rank wasn't up to where it should be, and boards were a little on the weak side. so i went ahead and did a gpr and applied. got an interview (perhaps a pity interview at the same institution where i was doing the gpr), and didn't match. i did a little research help here and there, and then came to the realization that there are tonnes of applicants such as myself. i needed to set myself apart (not by research 1 day/week, but a full-time gig), b/c my class rank and boards weren't doing that. so i did a masters (tmjd). presented, published, WENT ALL OUT. also worked a little, so got to save up some cash. man, to be honest, it was a tough decision for me not to reply to all the emails i was getting from oec affiliated schools, even for non-oec spots. but i stuck to my principals. i stuck it out for the extra year, made some $$, and matched. the icing on the cake is i'm getting a stipend at my program and i decreased my debt considerably the last couple of years. i'm not being cheesy here at all, but if i could plan it out (i.e. match immediately after dent school, versus this route), i would do it again this time. i got a new subspecialty skill (tmjd), matured, built my character, got to work in the real world and make some $$, travelled, got married, etc. i also got to appreciate academia a little more and would maybe consider it some day(vs. in d school it was like no way). so my point is if your stats aren't way the heck up there (or even if they are), go all out and do something unique. stick to your goals, you never know why life has its twists and turns, but things do happen for a reason. **** this feels good....congrats to everyone out there...

I can't believe I matched. I'm a foreign trained dentist. I have board scores 94 & 90. I matched to Ohio State Univ. For all those foreign trained dentists, don't lose hope. U can make it.

Einstein Medical Center.....YAHOO!!!!!!

I didn't have the stellar board scores or class rank but was in the military, have a graduate degree and did lot's of research. I think there's a program out there for everybody...just have to find it!

And sometimes the only way to find it is to literally apply to every program out there...

Congrats!

Got the disappointing e-mail this morning and the most frustrating part of it all is that someone from my own school who I know does not deserve it got in (poorer stats, no research, no activities). Heard rumors and now I have a deep suspicion that it is true that this person's 'connections' got them in.

If anyone has had similar experiences and has overcome them, I would be happy to hear your suggestions. I am not the kind of person who is jealous or who hates on people. It's just frustrating when you see something shady happening. (And, yes, I do realize that more goes into the selection process than grades, etc) Believe me when I tell you that something is amiss.

Plan on reapplying and do believe that things happen for a reason and no selection committee will determine my worth.

To all those who matched, congrats.

Are we supposed to contact the program director and let them know? I think I read that somewhere.

Just out of curiosity, if you havent interviewed at an open spot post match, can you still send in your info and get accepted there?

Would you like to sit out a year? I'm sure UCD1 would switch spots with you.

Seriously, be happy you matched.

And if you have doubts about matching so far down, send me a PM.

They send you a formal acceptance letter. You sign and return it. I am sure you can contact them if you would like to though.

Last year I did not match. I was really dissappointed at first, but I did a gpr and I got 9 interviews this year and matched to my first choice (UMinn)! Plus, I feel like I am learning a lot from my gpr. I am growing as a person and extending my knowlegde. A gpr is not as bad as you think. Additionally, I know a few people who did not have the grades but improved their application in other ways who get in. So even if you are not top ten or have the best board scores (maybe low 80s) you can still get in. So try again, you can do it!:luck:

Just to give you a heads up...THE Ohio State University.

Congratulations!!!👍

👍 U. of Detroit Mercy 👍
Very good clinical program with wonderful group of residents
anyone at UDM can send me PM
Good luck to all that accepted.

Sorry forgot to post stats:
Board 95, class rank top 10%, 2 years ortho clinical experience, no research

Anyone going to Loma Linda next year?

Matched at Michigan. I never would have predicted it a year ago.

Boards: 96, 97
GRE: 1440
Class Rank: 1st
Student Body President

At some point these qualifications become superfluous. If you are thinking of applying, get above 92 on boards, 1200+ GRE, top 10 class rank, do a research project, and some other extracurriculars. These programs want well rounded people.

Congratulations to all who matched. And good luck to all those applying next year.

93 nbde part I
#2/68 class rank
2 yrs research
Dentsply student clinician
Lots of reseach competitions
leadership positions in several organizations

I'm headed to LSU!🙂

Boards: I- 92, II- 86
GRE: 1290
Class Rank: 2nd
Private Practice: 1 year
Research: not too much
Extras: M.P.H, Lots of community activities, and leadership positions, few awards and presentations.

That's all I can think of....

Well this is the 2nd time I applied, and I'm glad I don't have to go through it again. It was an ordeal and nerve wracking but you got to do what you got to do....

Thanks Griffin and Jedi....for all your time and help! God Bless you both!

To those who didnt get through... I've been there before and I assure you it's only a test of your perseverance. Get some Johnny Walker and keep on walking....

I would also like to thank Griffin. She has help me as well, and also a lot of other people on the boards. 👍

Tyme gives timeless advice. Keep your chin up! Not matching is no fun. There is no way to brush that off. Just try your best to remain focused on what things will make you better next year. It will arrive sooner than you think.

Some of you are is disbelief to not have matched. You deserve better. I know several people who should have without question matched the first cycle. For whatever reason(s) it just didn't happen. They tried to be positive and move on. It was a terribly tough task. But they moved on and matched the 2nd year. Best of luck!

never would have predicted it a year ago? come on, somebody is too hard on him/herself. your credentials are stellar!

What I meant is that I never would have predicted MICHIGAN. I had a good shot at my home institution, and sort of assumed I would stay here due to my close relationship with the program director and administration. However, I realized while interviewing that there is some advantage to doing residency at a different institution than my dental training. Michigan appears to be the best place for me, all things considered.

GORP = Graduate Orthodontic Residents' Program

Held at University of Michigan every OTHER summer (first weekend of August)

2005 - Seattle
2006 - Ann Arbor
2007 - St. Louis
2008 - Ann Arbor (!)

A weekend of socializing with other residents from different parts of the country. Some lectures (more entertainment) and tons of prize giveaways at the last hour of the meeting... make sure you stay till the last hour because the reps will be holding a raffle to give away a lot of stuff. Last year, there were plenty of iPods being handled out to residents! I highly recommend you attend one at least once.

thanks blue; my post was in jest..................i know about the gorp....

EASILY treatable with modern antibiologicals......what does zithromax have to do with nickle titanium anyway ?????

Those of you who posted and matched, how many of you matched at your HOME school?
I'm just curious what the likelihood is to match at another school, IF that is what I desire.

take what you get and rock on..................
