Thanks for the reality check. It actually helps.

I have a question for all of you:

I got a 32Q on my one MCAT but think I can do better since I pretty much uncharacteristically bombed the verbal. I thought a good plan of action would be to study for the January MCAT and send them my improved scores if I haven't been accepted by then. Is this allowed, because I did not indicate on my AMCAS that I would be taking the MCAT again.... (I was hoping I wouldn't have to.)??

Thanks

I would just call and ask. Most schools don't officially accept Jan retakes, but who knows if they will consider them in a less formal way.

Hi -

I just called and am not quite sure what to think / to do. She said January MCAT scores will only be considered if I am put on the waitlist. If I want to otherwise improve my application in the meantime, I can take more classes, do volunteering, and update them with this stuff. But she seemed adamant that I could not update them with MCAT scores until I am waitlisted.

I am not sure what to do! I think maybe I should just study and take them; this way, if I am waitlisted, I can use them? Preparing for the MCAT again is a tiring proposition, but maybe the best thing I can do in the event that I do get waitlisted??

Thanks

Umass does not love me 🙁.

Hey, cheer up! They may not love you as much as linguini, but they probably still love you. They just take a LONG time.

Well, have you applied elsewhere? I think I remember you saying you were EDP, so did you add schools after getting pushed to the regular pool? If not, definitely prepare for the MCAT - even if you don't get in to UMass you'll have it for applying next year. I would also identify whether your GPA or your ECs are weaker, and act accordingly. All you can really do is try to address their reservations about your app, and at least with classes and ECs you can update them before it comes to a WL situation.

Good luck!

Thanks - I think I am going to study for the MCAT again cause this is probably the quickest and most effective way to bolster my app. My ECs are good, except I have been doing less since having a baby, so I need to pick this up a little too. If I still haven't heard anything after the MCAT, I am going to take a few more courses, maybe computer science and statistics since these will come in handy. I have applied elsewhere but am really not serious about them at all.

I am interviewing in the morning and will need to fly out the same day. Can any prior interviewees give me a time frame of when I should be done (on the safe side of course)? I need to book my flights🙂 😍Thanks in advance!

The latest interviews they book are 2:45pm. They are supposed to be 30 mins long, but leave time for running over/off-campus interviews (they provide transportation to those). So, I would safely say you will be out of there by 4pm. Logan is only an hour away, but you'd be driving during rush hour, so budget accordingly!

Good luck! UMass was pretty awesome.

It might also be helpful to look at flights out of Manchester, Providence, and Hartford. I live in Shrewsbury (right across the lake from the medical center) and rarely ever fly out of Logan because these other airports are only marginally farther away and are serviced by Southwest.

Thanks for the help. I totally agree Providence tends to be a lot easier! My actual interviews are in the morning (10 am). Does that mean I'll be done even earlier (aka before the 2:45 interviewers)?

Yep. After the morning interviews, there's a group lunch, then a tour. You'll be done after the tour. I think they tend to finish around 2, definitely before 3.

But if you want some official advice, call the admissions office. They're friendly, and they should be happy to help you figure out all the timing for your flight.

I am bracing myself for the Friday blues🙁

So, anybody hear any good news from UMass on this rainy Friday?

I really wish that UMass was more specific about when they would get back to us....it would make Fridays much less stressful.

why is everyone focusing on fridays? Did the school say something about releasing decisions only on friday?

...but yeah, I really wish they would start letting a few more people know...I interviewed in September for God's sake.

They said that they notify applicants of any updates to their status specifically on Fridays.

I am also pretty sure it is usually in the morning.

Boo-hoo👎

On my interview day, some of the med students told us to "be prepared to wait" to hear back from UMass, and that many of them did not hear anything until late in the cycle, like April. That seems soooo far from now! Unless of course, it is good news, then I will wait very patiently. :luck:

I'm really not good at waiting... Especially $8,000/year tuition waiting....

ZOMG i got in. Just checked the status website. Seriously, everyone go check. No e-mail or anything tho...weird huh?

I interviewed on September 29th, so it had been a while.

Wow! Thanks for the heads up! I just got in as well. No email though...

Interviewed 9/16

Ah! Congrats! Where did you see your acceptance on the status page? Did you have to click on the "Accept/Decline Admission" button?

I interviewed in October and don't have any changes yet!

Yay!

Yeah, I interviewed in October too and haven't heard. Perhaps we're the next round?? *here's to hoping!*

Congrats again guys!

Don't worry! Umass admissions is slow. But yeah, it was under the "Accept/Decline Admission" button.

I just checked online and I'm in too! Under the accept/decline button. I called the Admissions office too, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke....and it wasn't! I guess we will be getting an email sometime soon with more info. My first acceptance! 🙂

I also interviewed on 9/29.

ZOMG i got in.

I just got in as well.

I just checked online and I'm in too!

Wow, that's great, guys - congratulations!

For the rest of you, remember that most of the class hasn't been accepted yet and probably won't be for a while still. Try to stay sane while you're compulsively checking email/websites/mail. (I know, a lot easier said than done.) And good luck!

I just got in! I interviewed Oct 22nd and got an email today a little before 4pm. I'm so excited!!! Yay UMASS Med School Class of 2013!

Congrats everyone!

@ snowflake wow, weird hearing people online who I have met in person.

Congrats everyone! I hadn't checked this thread all weekend so I just read about all the acceptances. Sadly, I haven't heard anything yet but am happy for you guys.

Congrats Ashley! Just wondering, you interviewed on a Friday?? (I interviewed Oct 21st, so I guess they have reviewed our applications already...)

Don't be discouraged if they have already accepted applicants from on or after your interview date. Zpiff and I interviewed on the same date and got accepted at different times.

Hey guys. Does anyone know if they will be releasing decisions this Friday considering it's the day after Thanksgiving? Just wondering...

Also, Linguini. What are your thoughts on Tufts v. UMass?

I've been complete for a while and haven't heard anything. Should I assume the worst?

no, not yet. UMass gives a pretty good number of interviews, and the cycle is far from over, so don't get discouraged yet.

I've been complete for a while and haven't heard anything. Should I call them??? or should I assume it is not going to happen? How late is too late???

I got my invite on a Tuesday.. Why are we all focusing on Fridays

Hey Thailand,

Friday is the only day that UMass offers acceptances. Speaking of... it's Friday again!!

Also, you didn't happen to interview Oct. 21st did you? Because there was a girl there who was teaching in Thailand for the year.

AL12s - I know what you mean! 🙂

By the way, does anyone know how UMass usually does on their Step 1? I can't remember if they mentioned it at the interview day.

Congrats everyone!

For all those that have been waiting for a while: cheer up! I have been complete since late September and just got my interview invite this evening. First interview too! I'm scheduled for next Tuesday, 12/9. Seems a bit short notice doesn't it? Anyway, I'm very excited. Good luck to all those still waiting to hear something.

Alrighty, it's Friday again! Has anybody heard any good news?

Hi, Linguini

I love ELF, it is one of the few movies I can watch over and over again, which I do with my son, and it always makes me laugh.

Interview! >.> although I'm not sure if I'm going to go... any advice?
