What's your status right now? Post-interview? It probably couldn't hurt to just send them in, if it isn't too much of a hassle for you.

If I'm not mistaken, I think the papers are probably asking which enrollment plan applies to you. They have more info on the plans here: http://www.ohsu.edu/finaid/. I believe the "standard" plan just means that you will be a traditional, full-time student.

Thanks! Yeah post-interview and still waiting...From what I've seen so far, 8 weeks seem to be the turnaround, so I guess I still have a few weeks to go.. I'm only on week five post-interview.

I wonder if the people interviewing at the end of March/beginning of April have to wait 8 weeks to hear from the admissions committee? I hope not, because that would be near or in June.

Interviews seem to vary, just know your application well and you should be fine.

Congrats to you, then. It must mean that you had some compelling activities that played out in your favor. How long did it take you to get your acceptance notification after you were interviewed?

Thanks! I interviewed Dec 15th and received email notice Feb 2.

Good luck!

Those of you who have been admitted - did you emphasize a commitment to primary care during your interviews?

Thanks for sharing.

Ascenda

I talked about it because it really is what I want to go into.. and because I talked about how all my activities have geared me into falling for primary care. If its not you're #1 inteterest though, dont try to talk about just to impress them.. someone like my interviewer will ask for the specific experiences from your application that lead you to your decision.

Goodluck!

From personal experience from last cycle...I think they will let you know May 15 by email if you get in..and by mail if not after that along with everyone else on the hold list.. at least that is what they did last year and what they even told us during the interview(which was in early april)

Good luck on your interview!

ohsu is my #1 choice and i'm going crazy waiting/hoping for good news. sorry but i have to vent and i'm sure my bf is tired of hearing about it (tho he would never say so)

anyone know if there's ANY use in calling the admissions office? I interviewed late January.....

checking my email/status page repeatedly is only causing more anxiety. 😱

I'd just expect nothing until May 15th. If you hear earlier, then be pleasantly surprised. It at least might help with the anxiety.

I interviewed with the Dean of Admissions on 3.10 and she said they're going to try and make decisions in a month.

^
Don't count on it. The wait is more like 2.5 months it seems now. I interviewed 1/12 and haven't heard back yet.

Does anyone have a recent matchlist for OHSU?

Have you interviewed yet? If you have, the matchlist for 2009 is included in the interview packet (it's in that blue spiral handguide). If not, I'm sure you could find it by doing a quick search on the SOM webpage.

Hey Brian-
have you been placed on hold? I interviewed that day as well.

Looks like we've got plenty more acceptances being handed out (IS and OOS). If you get a chance, I would encourage those with acceptances to join the facebook group "OHSU School of Medicine Class of 2014". A couple of us think it would be fun to have some social gatherings prior to school. Facebook will be the main form of communication.

Good luck to those waiting to interview/waiting for a decision.

Does anyone know if OHSU is still sifting through secondary applications for interviews? They said I would be notified either way about a month ago and I haven't heard anything back says interview or no interview . . .

Astrand4,
I'm in a similar position. I've had this status update on my page for about a month and I'm not sure what to think:

Your file has been screened and is currently on hold for an interview, pending further review. Due to the competitiveness and size of the applicant pool, some applicants are placed on hold until the entire pool has been assessed. As soon as a final decision has been made we will notify you immediately. This decision may not be rendered until the end of February.

It seems like the end of February was a while ago. I was looking on the thread from last year and there were a couple more interview invites around this time but right now I'm not too optimistic. If I don't hear anything in another week or so I'm pretty much going to have given up hope.

I think they may still be sifting through secondaries. I got an invite last week and my application's status had never changed from the "complete" notification and it was never placed on hold. So I think they may still be going through people...not sure

A final decision has been mailed to you via US Mail...

Wow, I get an interview last year in mid October, get put on the waiting list, get rejected during the first week of matriculation and now don't even get an interview. I don't understand what I did wrong. I addressed the weaknesses that the dean told me I had during my exit interview. I guess I just suck at life...🙁. Good luck to everyone else.

RGMass03,

It looks like rejection from OHSU for me as well:

A final decision for the MD program has been sent to you via US Mail.

Well that sucks. Oh well here's hoping to the other schools.

PLU2010, I feel your pain dude. Its just bad timing for all of us applying this year. With the way the economy is, everyone and their grandma is going back to school. Its fierce competition out there. Anyways, I wish you the best on whereever you end up.

At least OHSU will tell us why they reject us (still on hold).

I think the lack of transparency into what AdComs are looking for is repulsive. Not to mention, even if they reject you pre-interview, would it really be that hard to add a one liner reason?

NatrixCaelicola:

I'm sorry to inform you that you will not be interviewed...I'm sure you'll make a great doctor at some other fine institution of learning... blah blah...we thought that you didn't have enough volunteer experience and your essays did not stick out to us.

Sincerely,

AdCom

After all, there is a reason they reject us, what would be the worst that happens? Oh yeah, they would be held accountable for their decisions.

And if any of you are going to say some reason about money... well at >5000applicants *$100 = > a half a million... I think the 10 seconds to write a sentence (or just send us their notes) wouldn't be that much of a financial inconvenience.

For those who are interviewing/have interviewed, did you send the optional picture of yourself to the email address specified on the interview letter? I am thinking of submitting one, but wanted to know first how many people actually have submitted/will submit a picture?

Thank you!

I didn't submit one since I'm not photogenic...😀

Luckily, acceptances aren't based on the picture (accepted 1/26).

Good luck with your interview!:luck:

I submitted one.

It probably wouldn't hurt to send one. Obviously, it wouldn't be a deal breaker if you didn't send one, but it helps the interviewer put a face to the application pre-interview, and if one of your interviewers is present during the adcom meeting, they will be more likely to remember who you are when trying to make a case for you (always a plus!).

Thanks for sharing information regarding the submission of your pictures.

Can either of you (or anyone else) share your interview experience? Who/how was your interviewer, what kind of questions did they ask, how did you prepare for the interview, what surprised you about the interview, how was the admissions staff/your day, and anything else you'd like to share. OHSU is one of my first choice schools -- this being my first interview (I submitted my secondaries very late during the application season), I just want to make sure I will be able to give my best.

Have you seen the Interview Feedback area on this site?

Practice! Get a friend or two to spend an hour and go through common questions and answers out-loud. Focus both on what you are saying and how you are saying it. Try to get a professor or physician you know to do the same thing with you, before your interview, if you can. You want to go into the real interview hot, rather than cold.

Thanks for the advice. I will study up on as much information regarding myself, the school, and healthcare as possible for the interview and will arrange to have some friends "grill" me over hour-long sessions.

Accepted today!! YES! Interviewed 1/12.

Congrats! I hope I will be able to say the same after my interview, but before May 15, 2010.

I would really appreciate if anyone can share his/her experience with having a student host. I already have lodging accommodations reserved, but am considering staying with a student host to save some money.

For anyone still waiting for/wondering about their acceptance packet, I just received mine in the mail today (3/18). I got the initial acceptance email on 2/10.

I would go with the student host. I did so on all my interviews and think its an invaluable way to learn about the school's culture. Also, I wouldn't stress too much about the interview. Just know yourself & intentions while understanding what OHSU is about.

Hmmm.. I'm wondering where my packet is then. Still haven't received it, and I got the acceptance email on 2/1.

Thanks. I will try to arrange a stay with one of their student hosts.

i sent one. wanted them to remember my face. =)

goodluck!

Has anyone that is on hold sent a letter of continued interest/update to to school? Do they like to get them?

I haven't sent anything. The website seems to imply that they won't accept them.

Acceptance email yesterday 😀
For those of you who have received your Acceptance Packet, mind sharing what all is in them? I'm anxious now to get my loans/whatever I need squared away. CSMD2B, I'm a Portlander also & I think it'd be neat to meet up with some of our classmates this Spring or Summer- good idea🙂

It had some forms for me to sign and send back (technical standards, background check agreement and one to accept their offer for admission). They don't require a fee to hold your spot...they will hold it as long as you get these forms back to them within 2 weeks. They also asked me to send official transcripts from all my universities (apparently AMCAS doesn't give them to OHSU directly). Lastly, there was some other info on financial aid, listserves, etc., but nothing too interesting.

There wasn't anything about my actual financial aid offer. I don't think we can expect that for quite some time. It did say we will be getting a letter in July about orientation.

I did not prepare for my interview. Since I wrote the essays, I figured I would know them pretty well. I also figured that they only person I would be good at being was myself, so I went there and acted my normal self. It all depends on your style. But generally, these questions come up:
- Why do you want to go into medicine?
- Do you have a field of preference/favorite organ system?
- Dow have your experiences prepared you to be a physician?
- What do you think you can contribute to the field of medicine?
- Where do you see yourself 10, 20 yrs from now?
- What are your strengths?
- What are your weaknesses?

There are thousands of questions that could come up, so I generally don't try to think about them in advance. I hate for my answers to appear scripted; I prefer to sound genuine, and I figure that there's no such question that I don't have an answer for. So, that's my $0.02.
Good luck.

Be prepared for rough questions at OHSU as well. One of my interviewers really drilled me. They asked question such as: "You have a really impressive resume, but how do I know you didn't do these things just to get into medical school?" and "How much experience do you have 'schmoozing'?" I was really surprised that this interviewer, whether it was an act or not, had very little appreciation for primary care and absolutely refused to hear anything related to reforming the US health-care system. Overall wasn't too bad though, and my other interview was amazing.

Does anyone know how much time 2nd years get off to study for the USMLE exam?

reezer4: I interviewed on 1/28 so I guess it took around 6-7 weeks to hear back. I wasn't expecting to hear anything until may 15, so it was a surprise.

Zaccac: Thanks for the info! I guess the packet isn't all that exciting afterall, so I won't be too anxious about when it's going to show up in my mailbox🙂

Mzungu: Your interview questions sound very strange. I have never heard anyone say their interviewer asked things like that. Did you write your EC List in your secondary as kind of a laundry list of experiences or something?

For those of you who are wondering how to prepare for an upcoming interview, I would say this:
- know your own experiences and what you got out of them (any shadowing, research, etc)- as they are likely to ask you to talk about these
- just be calm and be able to think critically if they ask you something more difficult (hypothetical situations, how you deal with stress, what you think of this or that). answer thoughtfully.
