* * 2010 - 2011 * * Secondary Applications Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For NSU's secondary, do we need to mail in the signature page? I received an error for my payment, so I am not really sure what we are suppose to do after the payment was processed.

Yeah, I don't blame you. I had the same thoughts about the SMP programs. It's like buying a second look or your way in at some schools, which is just way too expensive, plus you factor in lost wages from that year for work and interest that will accumulate over ~15 years and you're looking at losing ~200-300k for that SMP. With your success thus far this year, it sounds like you made a great choice.

Oh, I did just want to note though, Western's tuition is actually 45k not 75k. They just calculate living expenses and add it in to the total. 😉

Western's tuition is actually 47k I believe 😉 but CoA is super high for Pomona. Their allowable loans are somewhere in the neighborhood of 78-82k. Still obscenely expensive. There is also rumors (just rumors, nothing real yet) that they are swapping over to a mostly PBL cirriculum and trying to raise their tuition. Scary thought IMO

I'm waiting for my LORs to be "sent" so I'm going to call them after I get off work to make sure they've received everything. i had problems with that damn signature page last year so I'm going to be damn sure to mail it this time. Last year they said something about not requiring it or it beign including in the secondary towards the end of the cycle

Elementary questions here,

The college I wish to apply will only OK me to send my secondaries when my primaries and MCATs are received, is that true?

Also, are the recommendation letters sent with my secondaries? So will it be OK to shadow a physician after I take my MCATs (August 24)?

Thanks in advance.

Timeline:
Primaries Submitted
Secondary received
Secondary + LORs submitted

Some schools may send you a secondary before your MCAT score is in. They will wait to mark you "complete" until you have your LORs and MCAT score in though. I'd get your primaries in soon and try to shadow soon as well so you can get your LOR. If you wait until your MCAT score is back to submit (late september) you won't get verified until November and by that time you are late.

Yeah, but $60 is a drop in the bucket compared to the MD secondary price tags. I was really happy to learn that most DO schools are comparatively inexpensive to apply to, but they nail you on the back end by locking you down with a 2k deposit.

Very true. Ah well, important thing is once you're accepted, that's all that matters.

👍

It was still 45k last year 🙁 I would love to go to Western if they have the same tuition as LECOM-E does, haha. I guess I'm going out of state for med school then (except if Western is the only school that wants me).

Touro-Ca?

Looking at last year's thread it looks like NSU started handing out interviews around the end of Aug to interview at Aug's end or beginning of Sept. If I'm really really really lucky maybe I'll get an NSU interview for around the same time so I can just buy one flight lol

You mean July right? This is what I'm hoping will happen to me too lol... although I'm pretty sure my flight is cheaper than from CA anyways 🙂

Touro-Ca?

I heard some sketchy stuff about clinical rotations of Touro-CA. So I didn't even apply there.

I guess my only tiny teeny possible shot to stay in CA is Loma Linda. If they reject me, I would just HAVE TO go out of state.

sorry, ya it was mid/late july. I think the first started going out like July 18th or something last year

I heard the same sketchy things from alot of people but then had a conversation while watching the world cup games with a current touro student going into her 3rd year. She said that her rotations were easily set up, all in a general area. She said that they recently had one of their former science faculty move to the clinical faculty and he has taken control. Things have gotten much more organized and have improved immensely. I'm giving it a shot for sure. Especially because I'd love to stay in California. I'd fight to find my own rotations in the area if i needed lol

Gah, feel so uncomfortable putting down all 30 med schools I applied to on my NSUCOM secondary. Anyone fib and just put down a few?

Yeah, I ended up doing it too. Just can't help but think if you only put down like 5 schools they'd take your app much more seriously.

In other news just got the Western/COMP secondary invite.

Couldn't that create a problem if you are accepted somewhere that you don't list on your secondary, because don't all schools get to see where their applicants are accepted after May 15 or something? Or is that only for MD schools?

Congrats on Western, I'm still waiting for them! 👍

And yes its just MD schools that see where you've been accepted.

EDIT: I just logged into the username that they gave me for my Western SMP and found that they've already put a fall 2011 "re-applicant" application into the system there. Interesting I suppose. Says its already processed. Wonder whats gonna happen with this one. Also interesting that its online this year and not a mail in file like last year.

megathunder, when were you complete? also care to post the essay questions for Western's app this year? Wanna see if they are the same before I start working on them.

Hey DbDan,
Someone posted the essay questions in the Western/COMP discussion Thread 2010-2011.
Good luck, I hope to get a secondary invite soon too!

Just noticed that. Thanks 👍 Wonder if I can start the secondary before getting the invite so I can submit right away

Here ya go from banweb just in case:

While shadowing a physician, what did the experience do
to solidify your desire/ambition to become an osteopathic physician?

What criteria did you use to select a medical school and why does
WesternU/COMP meet your high level of expectation?

Describe your participation in community service activities in a
medically underserved or economically disadvantaged community.

Explain why the opportunity to study and participate in clinical
experiences in Southern California appeals to you.

My first interview is set. Here I come LECOM 8-27 :highfive:

Congrats! See you there. Last year there was only 12 per interview. So far I think I've read 4 SDNers who have our interview date. 👍

I agree. I think it's a terrible question to ask and it puts you in a precarious situation.

Nice! I'm still waiting on that one... Was it digital or USPS?

Wow, I didn't know that..But it's awesome to know that they are doing a better job now :] I would definitely picture myself living in the bay area. It's incredibly beautiful!!!!!! 😀

wow and i thought my credit card was getting murdered. u guys have definitely invested a lot. too bad there isn't some kind of refund for all these school related expenses.

@ dbdan, u obviously put that u received an interview for LECOM on the NSU app right? when it asks for status of the application. just wondering if there could be any negative to that

Didn't put that I have received this year's interview. I submitted to NSU about 2 minutes before getting the phone call from Bradenton so at the time I hadn't gotten one  I'm praying that I somehow manage to get an NSU interview and can schedule it at the same time though so I can just fly once.

haha i c. guess it cant hurt to put it down. and yessss i feel the same about the NSU interview. lets hope they do!

Anyone else interviewing at LECOM-E on 7/16? I'm quite nervous AHHHHHH!

u guys upload a photo for NYCOM's secondary?

If given the chance, I always send or upload my photo... Only if they ask, haha I don't just send out my pic to all the schools!

How long are you guys making your COMP secondaries? I'm thinking half page each. Why in the world wouldn't they give us a limit?

Last year the limit was 1pg per essay I believe. You are one of the few who even have a COMP secondary yet. i haven't even gotten an invite

1 page double spaced like Touro-CA's or 1 page straight up?

is it OK to use phrases from a previous personal essay I wrote for Pharmacy School for AACOMAS application?

As long as it's applicable... I think most of us on here are guilty of some form of personal plagiarism🙂

Touro-CA's is suppose to be double spaced? I don't think I saw it say that anywhere.

@noshie haha yea i def wouldnt wanna be sendin my pic out if i didnt have too

I didn't see that either. O well if I wrote too much. I also wrote a full page between the two essays that gave you 3 lines. I don't think they care as long as its not fluff bull****. Who knows

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but yeah it was right in the directions:

"18. PERSONAL STATEMENT - PLEASE INCLUDE, WITH YOUR APPLICATION, A RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT: (You will need to print this page for reference, then use your own word processing program or typewriter to formulate your response. Statements should be a maximum of one full computer generated, double spaced page, with a minimum font size of 12. Attach your response to your supplemental application)"

I'm just gonna double space my COMP essays (aka half page each), don't think they're looking for 4 additional full page essays in the secondary.

Yeah, I get the sense they try to limit it so you don't feel obligated to blab, because they don't want to read it just as badly as you don't want to write it.

Some schools won't read past the limit, so if you make your point too late they won't even get a chance to read it.

That's a smart bet. I'm guessing ability to follow instructions is fairly large on their list of how to eliminate people and decide on interviews. If you can't follow them, then they feel less inclined to want to give you an interview... unless you're an amazing applicant otherwise.

I remember when I screened resumes in the past and anyone that didn't follow the directions went straight to the "round file."

I'm sure they will look over it, as long as you didn't ramble on for that last half a page.
