I was looking at the M1 calendar to see if I can attend a friend's wedding and saw "Self-Directed Learning." What exactly is SDL? Do you think it's possible to catch a 5PM flight when SDL is scheduled for PM? Thanks!

SDL just means there's nothing scheduled, you can definitely take a flight then.

I have a friend who is a 3rd year med student at Pitt - she suggested posting here. I am not a med student but I would be happy to have you as my roommate.

I have been living in this wonderful, very large apartment in Shadyside for the past 3 years - my roommate is moving out and I would like to stay here because I can't find anything as nice as this for the price.

-2 bedroom/2 full bath
-each bedroom has 2 large closets
-large rooms, high ceilings, exposed brick
-full kitchen with dishwasher
-working gas fire place
-large storage closet
-hardwood floors in living room, carpet in hall and bedroom
-covered porch
-parking space included
-free washer/dryer in building - new HE washer and dryer
-secure building
-central air

Rent is $770/person - includes heat, water, parking, laundry (electric
runs $20 in winter/ $50 in summer when the AC is on)

I have looked at 1 bedrooms that are comparable with parking, laundry, and heat included - everything similar is at least $1200. This apartment is 1/2 the 2nd floor of the building. The building is an old mansion from the 1890's that was converted to condos in the 1970s

I am a 31 year old professional female - I am usually at the office, but I occasionally work from home. Looking for another professional or grad student. The building is pretty quiet - 2 Tepper students live upstairs - the rest of the building is professionals or doctors. I hope to find someone that is friendly and guest are welcome anytime.

Room is available at the end of July. Please email me for more information and photos. lpatross - at - gmail.com

Thanks.

Hey, where did you find the M1 calendar??? I also have a friend's wedding and still haven't told her if I'm going to make it because I had no calendar. I'm sure I'm just being lazy, but I'd love some insight or directions on how to get it.

Thx!

😀 These guys respond so fast! I hope you're able to attend that wedding.

I submitted a primary to Pitt because I just love UPitt and Pittsburgh in general. After reading this thread though I don't know if I should even complete my secondary. Anybody who's interviewed and knows what Pitt is looking for want to look at my MD apps and tell me what they think? My gut tells me to go for it, but if you think it's just a waste of 100$...

EDIT: I'm in this years cycle, a year after you guys.

You're stats are nearly identical to mine, and I am still on Pitt's WL this cycle, despite a (seemingly) solid interview performance... BUT I'm also from the Northeast. For people in our stat range, I'm convinced demographics play a big role in the selection proccess, so the fact that you're from Wisconsin may actually be an advantage. Schools like to build classes that are very diverse geographically, so I would encourage you to give it a shot.

That being said, I do think our GPA's are a little low for an outright acceptance at Pitt, so prepare for a long haul.

What exactly about your academic/EC record makes you think you aren't a solid fit for Pitt?

I actually think you have a great shot. I do not think it would be a waste of your money.

Good luck!

My GPA. Poor freshman year, followed by 3 years of 3.7+ performance. I just see all of the insanely competitive people that apply here and even though I feel my MCAT and ECs are strong (strong clinically and volunteerism wise at least, research is a little weak), I just figured everybody else would have that as well and the GPA would be a deal breaker.

I did the secondary anyways. Pitt is a dream school and I would have been disappointed with myself in a few months looking back had I not filled it out. Here's to the best!

You have a good app.. as good a chance at anyone at this point. Just be prepared for a long year! good luck!

I think you made the right call. I was admitted outright to Pitt with a GPA of 3.56 and strong ECs, MCAT 37Q. I was also worried about my GPA throughout the process, but they obviously were willing to look beyond that. I was very heavy on research, but you have more clinical experience than me. Good luck!

The administration is pretty good about working with people who have obligations/emergencies/illnesses, etc. I was IN a wedding, out of town, the weekend before our anatomy final (which was on a monday). and the administration would have allowed me to take it early (not late, unfortunately). In the end though, I opted not to, since it was a cumulative final, and didn't feel I'd have time to adequately prepare. Just studied a lot while traveling!

Good to know because I am in a VERY similar situation. Though I do not know if I'd like to do it before.

Does anyone have the class schedule of first year? Like the exact times (instead of just AM/PM) of anatomy, medical interviewing, etc.

I'm also curious about this, although I think we'll find out soon enough 🙂

Unfortunately getting us our precise schedules in a timely fashion is one area where Pitt has been dropping the ball, it may not happen until a week before the class in question. Hopefully this will improve as our first year class gave them a lot of grief over this and change may be coming. It's unacceptable to not give us our schedule until a few weeks in advance when things like trips home require planning long before that, and you can be dinged for not attending required PBL sessions.

I just got accepted off the wait list of another school so I won't be coming to Pitt after all. Hard decision to make, but in the end it matters a great deal to me to be close to family and SO. Good luck to whoever takes my place*!

* I called and wrote to the school that wait listed me. I think it worked.
