I have heard that they won't be sending out acceptances until the second week of April...

Man, that sucks. I remember when I interviewed somebody saying we'd hear back by mid-March.

what's going on at usc... did they meet mid march or what?

Waitlisted today.🙁

They've already made the waitlist? Or did you receive the hold letter? I thought they weren't making the list until mid-April. Either way sorry about the news 🙁

"We have selected 95...all offers have been accepted...you have been placed on the Alternate List for continued consideration..."

Wow... this does not sound like good news. I can't believe they offered that information in a letter to you. Can we take this to mean that they have 95 applicants who have 100% committed to USC, meaning they won't be even having a waitlist? What would constitute an alternate list?

Yeah I'm confused. I thought the waitlist had not even been made up yet. Can anybody clarify this?

I'm pretty sure this is the waitlist. As for the 95 acceptances, I'm guessing that just means that that number of people have put down their deposit. There will still be movement, as people with multiple acceptances make their final decisions, and withdraw from other schools.

I also received a letter in the mail today (dated March 25) stating that I am on the "alternate list." I interviewed Feb 16.

I got the alternative list letter in the mail today, interviewed Dec. 8th. Still don't understand if it is a waitlist or what.

Thank you guys for sharing. I guess we just keep waiting... and waiting... as long as not all hope is lost I think I might be ok. :scared:

did any one of you who got an alternative list letter today have received a rejection letetr earlier. It was not actually a rejection but it said something that we will keep reviewing your file....... I got it in nov afer my interview and i assumed that it was a rejection.

I called Dr. Ford to ask about this and she is currently in the ad com meeting untill about 4 or so. We'll see...

My understanding is that through the cycle you receive one of three letters (an offer, a rejection, or a "we are still thinking about you"). At the end of the cycle they compile the waitlist/alternate list (not sure if there is a difference) from the "we are still thinking about you" group.

Yea i got that letter also, about a month after my interview.

Thanks. it make sense now.
It means they have reviewed the files again and came out with this alternate list. For those who already got this letter, there is still hope.

Are they sending this leter to everyone who intervieded?

I called and talked to Mrs. Streeter today. This may clarify things for everyone. After interviews you are either 1) Accepted or 2) Put "on hold" until interviews are completed in March. No rejection letters are sent out until March. After interviews end in March, they create the waitlist and if your overall committee score is above the cut off number (whatever that is, she wouldn't tell me), then you are placed on the waitlist/alternate list. If your score is below that cut off number, then you are sent a rejection letter. If you received the alternate/waitlist letter this week, then you are indeed on the waitlist. She said there wouldn't be any movement until after May 15th and to check back with her after that date. She said they have made all the offers they are going to make until May 15th.

Hope this helps. I'm in the same boat: waitlist. Good luck everybody! :xf:

Great! Thanks for sharing. Good luck!

Would they have sent all the waitlist letters today or stagger them till mid-month? I'm confused because Dr. Ford told me a few weeks ago the list would be made mid-April. Sigh.

Mrs. Streeter said all letters (waitlist and rejection) were going out this week. They probably have a couple hundred to send out, so it might take a while to get to you...good luck! :xf:

I know there are a lot of theories floating out there, but does anybody know how many people are on the wait-list each year? And also, how far down on the list do they "usually" accept people each year (ie: middle third, etc.)?

I may absolutely be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure I recall one of the head honchos at the interview saying they usually send out only enough waitlist/alternate list letters to people as they usually have drop or take acceptances to other schools. So if they accepted 95 and expect, on average, 20-25 to drop, they may not send out more than 30 alternate letters. Don't quote me on any of those numbers at all, I'm just speculating on what one of the admissions people said on interview day.

PS, I also got the alternate list letter today, interviewed Feb. 16th.

Thanks. Wish your theory is true then many of us will have a second chance.

Got the rejection letter yesterday. Heartbroken. Good luck to everyone else.

I am sorry to hear the rejection letter.
so the theory that they are sending finel alternate list and rejection letter is true.

it means that the people who are in alternate list still have some hope.

I spoke with Shelly Streeter today and she was able to tell me that I am in the top third of the "alternate list." She said last year there was enough movement to go down into the middle third but the amount of movement is obviously different and unpredictable every year. She also said other than this there will not be any other information available (and offers will not be made) UNTIL after May 15. Based on the amount of movement at that point, they then go to the ranked list and make the appropriate number of offers.

GOOD LUCK to everyone!!! :xf:

I can't decide if i want to call and find out what third of the alternative list. Did she tell you how many were on it

What is the problem in calling?
and what is this THIRD, MIDDLE THIRD and BOTTOM THIRD?

No. They won't say how many are actually on the list. I read from last year's thread where someone asked Dr. Ford if it was closer to 25 or a 100 and she responded 100. But again, I have NO idea and that could vary year to year also?! Knowing that they went down into the middle third last year... I think it is beneficial to know where you stand. At least you then have SOME idea how likely or not it is for there to be enough movement to receive an offer.... It kinda tells you to still have hope or to make other plans!? Good luck with whatever you decide! :xf:

Like lets say its 90 on the alternate list (juuuust a random number, no idea how many really) then the top third is 1-30, middle third 31-60, bottom third would be 61-90. Just an example.... GOOD LUCK!

I guess I heard wrong then, maybe that's how many they put in the top third of the alternate list.

Wait-listed here. At least I still have hope. I think I might call tomorrow.

Here are my thoughts:

1960 applied, 338 interviewed, 145 were accepted, 83 enrolled in 2010

If 145 total were accepted and only 83 were enrolled then 62 students were accepted but did not go (~43%). Thus, I would conclude that around 62 (this is an estimate) students were taken off the wait-list.

If there were 100 on the wait-list and 62 got in then there is a roughly 62% chance to get in off the wait-list...which is not bad at all.

This also agrees with the statement that they got to the middle third.

**I got the admission data from a website and not the MSAR so I am not sure how accurate it is**

well I sure hope it's that many.... I have read on some sites that a typical school fills the class from the waitlist with as few as 12 to as many as 1/3+ of the entering class. Just hoping for LOTS of movement at this point between now and May 15!!! :xf:

KKat, you are truly a lady and a scholar.

Thanks... 🙂

Just wanted to give hope to all ... from my conclusion they take a lot of people off the wait list.

Considering USC is competing for the same pool of applicants as MUSC and many of us have applied to both (I know I did...I got an email saying they would be making the wait-list soon btw) come May 15 students holding acceptances to both MUSC and USC will have to choose and open spots for wait-listers.

I just want to know if I need to start working on my app for next year :scared:.

And there will be a thrid Med school in SC next year which make it even better for IS students.

I just called, found out I was in the middle third so I still have no idea what to expect. Just hoping there's a lot of movement. When I called, Dr. Ford asked if I was IS or OOS, so that makes me think there may be separate waitlists for each.

Is that the school in Greenville or the new DO school in Spartanburg you are talking about?
