Has anyone gotten off the Alternate List as of late? I haven't seen anyone get off the Alternate List since very early on back in November. Also, out of curiosity, is there a deadline this year where applicants accepted to the MD and MD/MPH programs have to make up their minds on which program they will attend?

It seems a lot of people who interviewed in January have been notified of acceptances/waitlists. I interviewed in early January and have yet to hear. Does that indicate a rejection? Does anyone know if they send out rejections?

Also, to those who interviewed in January and have heard back in the last few weeks, were you just MD or MD/MPH as well?

Thanks! Sorry for all the questions, but the waiting game is hard on my nerves.

The email (there were actually 2 emails about a week apart) requesting that we choose between MD and MD/MPH went out early in January (at least for me admitted in mid-Dec). I already chose one and it appears they were trying to get everyone to make decisions quickly. I doubt that I was the only one getting the 'hurry-up' on this issue so it is safe to assume everyone else has more or less made a final pick by now. The first email was not as firm as the second, and I suspect any subsequent emails after that would have been even more firm in their tone...but I did not wait to find out🙂

Same boat. I've been through 4 AdCom sessions without a firm answer now, after being GUARANTEED by Dean Weisman that other applicants and I would receive a decision on our first review date. A couple of weeks ago I called, mentioned who I was, and admissions told me that they were a little late sending out e-mails and that I would be receiving one soon, as well as something in the mail. So I asked if I could have a preview of what to expect, and they're like, 'Wait, who are you again...?' Then it turns out they still hadn't reviewed me...

And it isn't just Miami that has pulled this kind of stuff. Pretty ridiculous how such prestigious institutions can be so demanding of their applicants, and then be exasperatingly unorganized themselves!

I understand that medical school admissions is a very busy business, but I don't think it's too much to ask to be kept well-informed of the state of one's application, especially when 'guarantees' are thrown around... :bullcrap:

It is highly possible that your file isn't complete if you haven't heard back yet, ie. the interviewer has not filled out your interview assessment yet so it's only guaranteed if the interviewers do their jobs right and unfortunately doctors are really busy and sometimes gets lost in the array of duties they have...

Whoops, wrong thread. Rejection has ruined my brain.

Interview invite today! 🙂 I was shocked to get one this late in the process.

Yeah I'm pretty sure there's a meeting tomorrow. They have one every other Wednesday.

Just withdrew, here's hoping my spot goes to a deserving applicant! 🙂

Anyone knows if UM over-accepts? or do they accept only to seats available and accept off the waitlist as people drop after the last round?

I think Dean Weisman said they don't. I also think he said that no medical school is allowed to accept more than the number of seats they have.

I take it your from chicago? Im flying up there tommorow🙂

Yes what would give you that idea 🙄. It's supposed to be really nice tomorrow (relatively speaking) so you picked a good day to come!

I think new medical schools like FIU and UCF are not allowed to over-accept, but it is standard practice for most established medical institutions. Dean Larkin at UCF mentioned most Florida schools accept 2 students per seat, and this is often the reason waitlist movement is relatively small. :luck:

do you think that they are still giving out interviews? I am still waiting too 🙁

Got an acceptance e-mail at 7 pm today, interviewed on Feb 10, I'm very excited! 😀

I'm losing hope on a interview at this school.... 🙁 Anyone know if they are still interviewing applicants?

I got an e-mail at 7pm tonight as well. I was SO depressed when I didn't get a call at 5pm.

Can't believe it!!!!
Congrats to everyone who was accepted today! I'm really excited for you all!

I wasn't as lucky though. Waitlisted at 6:30pm. Hey, it's better than a rejection!

Congrats to everyone accepted 🙂 And for those on the waitlist, keep your heads up cause you've definitely still got a shot!

I was wondering for those who have recently been accepted, do you mind sharing your stats and when your app. was complete?? I'm still hoping for an interview and i've been complete for a whiile : /

I keep hearing two conflicting things about being put on the alternate list when it comes to this school. People have told me that there is virtually no movement when it comes to UM and others have told me that they put alot of their applicants on the alternate list until about March and start accepting from there. Does anyone know which is true?

I think it depends on the year... Rumor has it that last year they overaccepted too many people (or less than expected declined their acceptance) so they almost had to over enroll the class. Maybe this year they learned their lesson and will rely on the alt list, instead of fearing overenrollment?

I spoke today with Admissions and they will be interviewing till the end of March. Good luck to everyone else who is also waiting to hear back from Miami! :luck:

Are you serious? There are more appropriate forums on DIFFERENT websites than SDN to discuss politics. Why don't you start another thread on your opinions about the government or beef you have with UM, because I don't come here to be an audience to crap like this. Quite frankly, I don't care one bit about your political views. If you don't have anything to contribute here, then please DON'T.

For those of you thinking about attending UM, I present to you exhibit A. This is one of the main reasons i would never seriously consider this school even if it was my last option. Democratic cesspool...

Former President Bill Clinton also paid a surprise visit to a class on health care policy this week, for the record. It was awesome.

That's the undergraduate part of UM though, so I don't know if it has any bearing to us all.

I think Dean Weisman said they don't. I also think he said that no medical school is allowed to accept more than the number of seats they have.

From what I understood during the interview, he said they accept about 20 students after every adcom meeting. I was talking to a first year friend today and she said nobody from their class was accepted off the alternate list, but it sounds like they're doing admissions differently this year.

Otherwise, I'm wondering how they managed to present a statistic of accepting ~75% of students who received an interview invite, because it sure seems like there are a lot of us alternates out there...

That's the vibe I'm getting as well that they're going to do things differently this year. What I do know is that last year they accepted too many people early and by the time they reached March/April for interviews, there simply weren't really any acceptances left and they don't want to repeat that mistake this year. So I'm guessing they're probably being conservative now and then go look at the Alternate List after all the interviews are over to see what needs to be filled.

I think the 75% stat includes people who were accepted off of the alternate list

So I am one of the lucky ones, that somehow has gotten into both the MD and MD/MPH programs!!! I am extremely excited. However, now I have a problem (but a great problem). I'm having a really tough time deciding. The MPH itself is not a huge factor because I figure I can get it by taking a year off or doing it during residency (for free even maybe). The main factor is the difference in curriculum. PBL vs. Lecture. And the difference in class size.

I'm very social, so learning in groups would be nice. And it sounds like the first semester for MD students is the hardest, whereas for MD/MPH they get eased into it by spreading out anatomy. But 50 people is a very close group... a little too close maybe...
MD you have a larger social circle, but I'm wondering if they still do group work or if I will be studying by myself every day? I just might loose my marbles.

Does anyone have any opinions on this/are in either program??

Oh, and I'm In-State. So there's also the $10,000 tuition difference per year....
