^^^ congrats, I have given up trying to figure out what UT San Antonio is doing

Talk to me about it. There is nothing I can understand about this process. At least, we know II can show up until 6:45 pm. But my email inbox is desperately empty...

^^^ lol I have been in a dry spell since 7/18 when I got my A&M interview, don't get me wrong I am grateful I have 2 early interviews but I need more in order to ensure that I will get that M.D. Lol haha 🙂 ......hopefully this **** works out for every1 applying....

Blimey! My first interview invite on 31 July. Confirmed on 10 July.

I'm in-state with a rubbish GPA (3.4c 3.3s) but a serviceable MCAT. I cussed a lot in my PS, and I'm also not very handsome, so it is possible the committee is showing me some of that good old-fashioned compassion I keep hearing so much about.

If anyone has an interview set up for 10 Sept and feels up for dinner or binge-drinking the night before, feel free to shoot me a message. San Antonio is a class town, IMO.

Interview invite today! Confirmed on July 20th. In state. Couldn't be happier =]

Interview invite!!! Selected the earliest date available which was Oct 1st.

^^^ seriously the next avaiable date is oct 1st? At this rate I won't even get an interview from Ut San Antonio if they have already filled all the interview slots until oct 1st....

Like you, I have a bad feeling about this. Slowly, the possibility of interviewing at UTSA is slipping away...

I think I remember perusing last year's application thread for UTSA and people were receiving interview invites well into September, October, and November, and that many of those peeps managed to pre-match and match into the program. Hope hasn't yet faded, Frodo.

^^^ thanks for that link, calmed me down a little. I guess if I don't hear anything back by the end of November I should start worrying.

Yesterday was the first interview day. They had us meet in the foyer of the lecture hall building, and at 9 we went into a smaller classroom for a short powerpoint by Dr. Jones and then a Q/A session with the MS4s on the adcom. Everybody was really helpful, and Dr. Jones did a great job of explaining what kind of student they're looking for. After that, we had a short tour (more like a flyby) of the school and parts of University Hospital. Lunch was set up with 1 or 2 MS2s at each table to answer any questions, and then everybody had their two interviews in the afternoon. Apparently most people had one interview with a physician and one with an MS4 (mine were both with docs). Very laid back, easygoing questions...I got one tough ethical question from my first interviewer, but overall nobody at UTHSCSA is trying to make you uncomfortable during the interview.

Overall, I was pretty impressed. SA is an interesting town depending on what you're looking for, but the school itself is excellent. The LCME probation was kind of an elephant in the room for a while, but at this point, I was assured it's in the past and will be completely straight before the class of 2017 matriculates. There was a sentiment that the LCME needed to make an "example" out of someone, and UTHSCSA got picked.

Good luck to future interviewers! I can try to answer any questions about interview day, and I'm sure there are a few fellow 8/6ers lurking around here.

This is the first I've heard of this issue. Can someone please explain/elaborate?

Would you mind sharing more on this? What kind of student are they looking for?

He's got this four-legged stool metaphor he uses, the four legs are as follows:

 • Academic ability: can you finish the curriculum? (if we made it to an interview, obviously they believe we can handle the course load)
 • Clinical knowledge/experience: have we had these experiences, and are they evident in the way we see medicine
 • Service: do you enjoy being of service to others?
 • Responsibility: have you demonstrated ability to take care of others (see leadership experience, etc)

And, quoting, "the four legs can't stand up without a top", and that top is your essay/letters/ability to present yourself as an applicant that fulfills all four of the above.

Atlas thanks for posting this info! Do you know roughly how many interviewee's were with you?

I'd say about 30, they typically have about 60 though; I'm guessing there were fewer since yesterday was the first interview day.

It's also worth noting that the interviewers don't have anything except for your basic biographical info (name, home city, school, parents, etc) and your TMDSAS essays. So it's in your best interest to have a coherent narrative ready that presents any of your resumé/ECs that didn't come across in the essays.

I got confirmed the 11th and still nothing. I've truthfully given up on trying to figure all of this out now lol. At the end of the day, what the adcoms do is something in which we cannot predict! All we can do is hope for the best and be patient. I've noticed that only a couple of people within the 28-31 range have received invites so if any of you are in that category hang tight! Best of luck to all 🙂

I've talked to a couple first years and there were people who submitted early and didn't hear until late in the interview season that they got an interview spot. I wouldn't worry too much about it (i know that's asking alot....med apps are stressful)

Hey y'all, if you can't tell from my signature, I'm a med student at UTHSCSA. If you guys have any questions about the med school or the curriculum changes, feel free to PM me.

Otherwise good luck to everyone who applied/is interviewing!

Interview invite for the MD/PhD program received this morning. I'm so excited but nervous at the same time!

I have my interview on August 20. Can you give any more details on what the interviews were like? Any questions that really caught you off guard (besides the ethical one)? Thanks for your help!!

I'm interviewing on Monday and from what I've gathered from previous years' threads and the interview feedback section, they really are just trying to determine your fit for their institution. With that being said, make sure you peruse the feedback questions on SDN's main website and answer all of them - it helped me tremendously.

Good luck!

thanks a bunch, I really appreciate it! i'll definitely need to sit down and look at this all.

I was just reading through this thread and a lot of people are referring to UTSA, but you know that it's UTHSCSA, right? UTSA is a completely different university that does not have a medical school and has no ties to UTHSCSA. Just thought you might want to know before interviewing there.

Yeah there is not ties between the medical school and the UTSA...Overall I was impressed. The university hospital is old as a lot of people have said but its still quality. The faculty, and in particular one of my interviewers, are excited about the new curriculum and I am not nearly as concerned about it now. I would never have considered being a guinea pig like the MS1 students are this year, but by next year I think it will be fine. Students were helpful and laid back. Be prepared for a lot of downtime on interview day though because the tours are short and I had a good 1.5 hours before my first interview. They stated that their average USMLE score was 225. Lubbock's was 230 and Galveston's was 235. I am not sure how much credence I would put into those numbers but that is what I got out of my weeklong journey in Texas.

Yeah the atmosphere is great and the students are really down to earth. The step score is well above average and many students matched into Anes... so I'm not too concerned.

Like the poster above said, the curriculum looks pretty effective. Lots to do in San Antonio area as well. Great school! Just be yourself during the interview.

Yeah they do. It's ridiculous. Up to 10% of our class some years go into anes. Our program director and chair are famous around here for A, generating a lot of interest in anesthesia and B, bending over backwards to help interested students become competitive.

Interviewed 8/13 and I absolutely loved it. It was relaxed and the interviews were not too bad. I would love to go here!

Does anyone know anything about staying with a student during the interview days? I have tried looking everywhere but couldn't find anything. 🙁

hey duyvtr, UTHSCSA should have sent/will be sending you an email regarding student housing. i don't think you can find this on their site. they sent the housing email to me about 3 weeks after i got the interview invite.

My interview date is tomorrow, but they only sent me the interview invite about 10 days ago since they had to match it with the MD/PhD interview. I guess they didn't include that information because it was such a short notice. 🙁

They told me it was too early in the year to have student hosts and even the social...school had just started and they wanted to give them time to adjust. The office said later interviews would be able to do that. Probably in September.

Hi I am new to this website...

Interviewed last year with a 3.72c, 3.60s, and 28 MCAT. I was waitlisted and didn't get in.

Retook my MCAT 6/21 and got a 30.

Got an "II" (I think that means interview invite?) on 8/6 for 9/24.

I currently do cardiovascular research at Baylor UMC in Dallas.

Beware, s/he'll steal your notes, poop on them, and return them all stinkified, much like this scene in Harold and Kumar:

you should really start charging for these timely gems you've been dropping.

Barbie, MD can fecalize my notes provided she takes me for med school interviews in her Malibu Barbie Jeep. I also would like a solid letter of evaluation

Found out same great news for us out-of-staters at my interview: we pay $1,000 less in tuition that in-staters! UTHSCSA gives a $1,000 scholarship to all out-of-state students, and receiving a scholarship to a Texas schools qualifies you for in-state tuition pricing. Total budget for out-of-staters (and in-staters) is about $42,000.

uhhh... 😕

Is that some type of spam?

Anyone else catch that?

I thought it might have been an inside joke or something? A night of tossing and turning hasn't brought any new insight to it.

Well first of all the poster was congratulating someone on getting in who clearly stated that he/she did NOT get it.

But I was referring to the bizarre "water delivery" spam link that they edited into their quote...

That's why I had assumed the two had a secret language where not getting in is code for getting in.

Or it was just spam, a theory for which you argue convincingly.
