2013-2014 APPIC (internship) Phase II

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone have friends who participated in Phase II last year?
Wondering the average length of time it takes most programs to contact applicants about interviews.

I did Phase II last year. I got 3 interviews, 2 of which notified in the first week of March. The third notified 1 day before ranks were due!

Yikes! That's really quick notice…
…Thanks for replying. 🙂

wow, so they interviewed you on the spot?

I was wondering about that also. Do we need to be prepared to interview on the spot for all of the sites we applied to? That adds a whole additional anxiety factor to what we are already dealing with. Oh my!

My site is planning on interviewing way more than 10 applicants. I think this will vary site-to-site. Don't make it seem bleaker than it is!!
Sorry, I just the average people a site ranked in phase II was under 10 so I assumed 10 interview. It's hard to be optimistic in this situation. Especially, when I was maybe over optimistic on the first phase which obviously didn't pan out well.

Yeah, pretty much. According to them, it was so that I'd "have a chance to ask questions," but of course, we know that means "interview." It wasn't the most pleasant experience.

As far as I could tell from the thread last year, that one site was the only one who pulled that trick (and they're not in Phase II this year). It's certainly possible that another site would do something similar, but it's pretty unlikely. I wouldn't worry about it, there's plenty of other stuff to worry about!

Personalized or mass email? I have a hard time believing they reviewed all applications today, but I'm wondering if they are sending invites as they review them, or perhaps they just weeded out most people based on their search criteria without reading the cover letters and essays.

The email was not personalized, but it was also clear that it was not a mass email sent to multiple recipients at once.

All these statistics are a nightmare, and DEFINITELY, not bolstering my confidence :dead:

Ugh. This is pure torture. I never liked statistics but now I really don't like them...

What sucks is the note at the bottom of the stats page that states: NOTE: Due to the limited number of APA- and CPA-accredited positions available in Phase II, along with the high desirability of these positions, students who applied only to accredited programs in Phase II (due to personal choice and/or restrictions by their graduate programs) likely experienced greater difficulty in getting matched.

Eck! So stressed my neck muscles are hurting. Never had that happened before.

🙁 Sorry. My neck is OK but I feel so nauseous and ready to cry. Glad we all have each other - you guys are good support!

When I'm really stressed, my shoulder and back muscles will randomly seize up. I highly recommend scheduling a few massages during this time! If there are any massage schools in your area, sometimes they'll offer cheap services provided by their students.

Pretty sure there's no good answer to this, but...

what are you guys thinking about places that got back to people within a couple hours of the deadline yesterday (i.e., St. Louis, Weill-Cornell)--I guess I should assume the worst but it seems crazy to think they would have been able to even look at most of the apps... I guess if they used some criteria (like hours or assessments) to eliminate a whole bunch of apps right off the bat without looking at cover letters... It just seems hard to believe I'm out of the running within hours of the submission deadline!

Sigh.

Are you talking specifically about these sites or just sites in general? I don't think that many sites will get back until middle of next week. If you are talking about the St. Louis site, I also received the email for assessments and case summary. It looked like a mass email. May have done an initial screening based off of search criteria just simply because they don't have time to look at everyone's. Keep your head up. Just think it's not a matter of IF you get an internship just a matter of WHEN.

St. Louis did not extend invites. They just requested two reports and said that they are reviewing apps, so I wouldn't worry too much. As far as Weill-Cornell, I haven't heard a peep either and doubt they looked at all of the apps. It is so disheartening thinking that we put so much thought into cover letters for them to not even to be read.

Just out of curiosity, what type of program are you guys in (PhD, PsyD, EdD and clinical, counseling, school) and what were your school's match stats?

I am in a university-based PhD in clinical psych and was the only one out of 10 who did not match 🙁+pity+

Also in a university-based PhD in clinical psych program. Typically a school with 100% match rate. I am curious about this too.

I am in a university based PhD in clinical psych and was the only one out of 6 that did not match (its seems every year there is 1 person who doesn't match at my program). Luckily everyone has been super supportive in my program. We are all really good friends with one another.

Yeah, I applied to both of those programs...Cornell I would not be at all surprised to not get an interview, but I am pretty disheartened that I didn't even get to the "send us your reports" phase for St. Louis.... Oh well, as several have mentioned, nothing to do but keep my chin up and keep plugging on the ol' dissertation while I wait to see what happens!

I'm also from a university clinical psych Ph.D. program--we have a very high match rate but I'm one of 2 (out of 10) who didn't match this year. The other person who didn't match has a very similar application/experiences to mine so guess there's something we're missing or we applied to the wrong kind of sites...

On another note, I was looking into externships (my program typically does all of its training at our in-house CMHC but I thought I should broaden my experiences since I'm interested in medical settings) but it seems like most of them have deadlines that have already passed! Anyone else running into this problem?

Joining the chorus and saying that I'm also a university-based clinical psychology phD student…..I'm 1 out of a cohort of 7 and I'm the only one this year who didn't match.

butmewait, St. Louis could send out the email while reviewing apps, your app may just be in the pile they still have to review. You got this!!

I also didn't get anything from St. Louis. It really sucks that we put so much into our cover letters and they prob didn't even read them. I feel like I want to send them supplemental materials anyway haha

Hi everyone! Clinical PsyD who did not match in Phase I joining the group. I applied for Phase II and some practicums "worst case scenario." Just want to wish everyone the best of luck getting their top choice in the second go-around! This process is a total roller coaster, and I can't believe in order to help others rebuild their lives we have to endure all this pressure and stress! :wtf::bullcrap:

I wish I could quadruple like this! I had the same thought--just read my assessment report, maybe you'll change your mind! 😛

I can't even think about practicums for next year yet. Not even sure what all would be available for me since most Chicago positions have already been interviewed for/filled, GRRRR!

University-based PhD here also, only one to not match.. my program has a 100% APA match rate for all but 1 year in the last 8 or so.

Congrats! Was it personalized or mass?

Sorry, I should have included that. Mass. It wasn't addressed to me. It also stated "The selection committee at KSU has completed a review of applicants for Phase II of the match." Doesnt say how many applied or were invited to interview.

clinical phd here too...only one not to match, i think, ever from my program :-/
although i must admit that we have a captive consortium available so most people don't apply to APPIC. This year it was only me and one another student.
still a bummer...and innerchild, man i almost forgot what it was like coming on here and now i am vividly remembering that sinking feeling when you see those "mass" emails have been sent out. best of luck to all of us!

Interview invite from the State University of NY Albany. They called when I was at the gym, so I couldn't pick up, and then followed up with an email. Interviews are being scheduled for next week.

I guess they did not like me 🙁

EDIT: Just got an invite

I'm in a clinical science PhD program. We went from a 10+ year 100% match rate to 2 out of the 5 of us not matching this year. I think that the faculty are wavering between being supportive and blaming us for ruining the program's spotless match rate.

I'm doing the same, but I'm not really sure where to start as there aren't any established externships for my program. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for saying that--I have not felt supported by all members of our faculty in the last week either--I would have thought that there would be a huge amount support during the last week, if for no other reason to maximize my possibility for success in phase 2, but I definitely have not been feeling it... Which makes me even more badly want to be moving on in a few months to internship! Oh well!

On the subject of externships, I'm not sure whether it makes sense trying to make some connections or submit some applications now (as in, before I know whether I've matched in phase 2) or wait until after 2nd match day...

Ask your faculty if they might know anyone who would be interested in having an extern. A few people in my program have gone to work with leading people in their field (which are usually friends of their advisors) over a summer break or similar amount of time. Since may are not paid or paid very little, people have aimed for places that they can stay with family or friends for free. Also find out if your faculty is open to you setting something up yourself with someone in the community.

I am going to wait until after match day II, and then start contacting places for externships

Sorry you're not getting much support either. My advisor has been nice, and the DCT was very sympathetic, but other than that - silence. Considering it's a small program and people are overly involved in each other's lives, it's been really strange. But - fragile narcissism makes it difficult for people to respond appropriately to perceived failure, so I shouldn't be too shocked! It definitely makes me want to match simply so I can leave, but I'm also hopeful that if I don't match again in Phase II, I can minimize the amount of time I have to spend in the building next year to almost nothing.

I plan on waiting as well. Worse comes to worse, I may just stay on at the prac site I am at currently.

I also can't imagine how American Lake VA ended up with four open spots. I keep waiting for someone to correct it!

I know some REALLY strong applicants who applied there and did not receive interviews. I applied there in Phase I even though I knew the site preferred PhD students was a little more generalist than I hoped for (I was rejected). For what it is worth, the rejection email was very nice. I am about 2 hours south of there and they have a good reputation.

I wonder how American Lake VA is going to let phase II students know if they are being considered? It seems like short notice to have another open-house?
