If anyone has questions about the town or campus in general, let me know. Huntington native!

Do they give equal preference to residents from adjacent states, or just WV residents?

I'm not in the medical school, (I just applied), but surely they would give preference to OH or KY residents. I'm not sure if you've been to Huntington or not, but it literally sits on the Ohio River, and you can get from Ohio to Kentucky back to West Virginia all within 15 miles. I know five or six students in the med school, and I know three that are from Ohio. As an undergraduate, our tuition is actually cheaper than out of state if you live in eastern Kentucky or southern Ohio, they call it "metro" tuition. I'd email the admissions girl if you need any more info, she was extremely helpful when I contacted her. [email protected] is her email, she handles all admissions questions.

Best of luck, and let me know if you need any more info!

Thanks! I'm from Maryland and I saw on the website that they accept applications from MD residents, but I will contact the admissions girl.

While Marshall will certainly consider applications from residents of adjoining states (in addition to those from non-adjoining states who have very strong WV ties), you won't receive 'equal' consideration with WV residents in that there are approximately 25 positions available for OOS students and approximately 50 positions available for IS students. Considering the OOS applicant pool is typically well over 1000 and the IS applicant pool is usually a few hundred, your chances are by no means 'equal' to those of a WV resident.

And Cindy is hands down the nicest, most helpful admissions staff member you will encounter in your application process - guaranteed.

Best wishes in your application!

A lot of questions about domicile and West Virginia, times you lived there, if you worked there, if you are married to a West Virginian, etc.

Can you please give the prompt?

Why did you decide to apply to the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine? If you have strong ties to West Virginia, please describe in detail.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Where do you want to serve or practice medicine?

If you are not presently attending school, indicate your employment or other plans for the time prior to your planned enrollment in medical school.

Has anyone figured out if there's a word or character limit for the essays? 🙂

the fields provided are huge. if you fill the whole thing, you're probably writing too much.

good luck!

Hey everyone,

I already completed the first essay. I was wondering if you had any insight on the second question:

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Where do you want to serve or practice medicine?

Are they literally asking where I want to be? Should I comment on what type of residency I want to pursue? Also, is it in my best interest to want to sty in WV?

Thanks!

it's in your best interest to be honest. if that genuinely means practicing in WV, say so. otherwise don't. adcoms are particularly good at detecting bs, especially if you are an out of state applicant.

and adcoms also know that incoming med students usually have little idea of what sort of medicine they actually want to practice and that most of them change their mind as they are exposed to different things. you're not expected to foresee your precise future. just make some general comments on how you might envision things playing out for you based on what you are interested in and what you know now, but be clear that there's definitely flexibility in your plans.

that's the approach i would take at least...

First year here at marshall, out of state applicant. ( taking a break from studying)

Love the school, love the people, and Miss Warren is the greatest lady you will ever speak to out of ALL the medical schools you will apply to guaranteed. She is always willing to help and is so nice.

Any questions feel free to shoot them my way. 👍

Also if anyone is concerned about the probation status, that was lifted recently so we are NO longer on probation!

For this essay, I think it would help to really connect your volunteer experiences to this. For example: If you want to do primary care, give an honest answer + examples from your volunteer experiences that influenced you , or doctors that you shadowed etc. Genuinely express your feelings and show lots of motivation! Just ask yourself after you write the essay "Does this answer make sense given what I've put on my application/done in the past? Does it connect? Do I sound convincing?

After having to reschedule my 10/12 interview, I have one scheduled for 10/19. It'll be my first of the season. Anyone else out there going to be there?? Anyone already interviewed? Any tips or suggestions? Getting excited!

Interview invite OOS! (But I'm a student here) 19th as well. Very excited.

Awesome! Guess I'll see you there! Wonder how many of us there will be. Last year's forum talked about like 15 people per interview day, but the year before it sounded like there were only a couple, so I guess we'll see!

How long did it take them to grant an interview after they received your application?

I'm IS, so I received my secondary prior to AMCAS verification. Submitted AMCAS 7/22, received secondary request 8/2, submitted secondary 8/24, AMCAS verified 9/13, received II 9/20. If you're OOS, Ts1991 might have some better insight into what to expect!

I'm instate! Thanks! So took about a week? My AMCAS just got verified! I submitted mid-August. But I submitted my secondary a week after I submitted amcas and my mcat is already there. I'm terrified spots are going to be full. Are you a legacy?

Exciting!! So I'd guess you should be hearing something pretty soon! I'm not legacy or anything special. I'm just a regular ole' no-name pre-med from a working class family. 🙂

I wouldn't worry about spots being full. From last year's forum, I saw that they interview way into the year and IS people are admitted through February, usually within 3 weeks of their interview (or wait-listed). Aside from a handful of special cases for OOS-ers (extremely strong ties, extremely high MCATs, etc.), they were wait-listing almost everyone first round. Of course, that's not a fully scientific analysis, just my observations from reading last year's forum, but probably sufficiently valid to calm your nerves! It was for me! I freaked out because I had to move my interview a week later than their original offer due to work, but I think in the long-run it shouldn't matter very much. If they have all your letters, then I'd say you'll hear something really soon! Keep us posted!

Thanks! Good luck on your interview! Hopefully we meet in person as classmates!

I just read this today on the Marshall "Admissions Procedures" document from their website:

West Virginia applicants having a 3.5 or better GPA in both science and overall, having a 26 or better total on the MCAT with no individual section below an 8 and having no recommendation below “Recommended with Confidence” will be interviewed by two
experienced interviewers. If both interviewers agree that the applicant should be a first-round
accept, the applicant will be immediately notified of acceptance if space in the class is available without having his/her application reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Interesting... so, then potentially there's a chance of not even having to wait the two weeks or so for the committee to convene??

I've spoken to Cindy about this. It happens to one-two ppl/yr. You find out in wk-2. The normal way is 2-3 wks

You were dead on! I received my 4 business days later! Interview 11/16

Hello, everyone!

I am just wondering if anyone else has been waiting for what seems like DECADES to be notified that AMCAS has verified their primary application.

I submitted my primary about 6.5 weeks ago, and I still have had no luck with verification.
My secondary application has already been submitted to MUSOM.

Also, how long did it take everyone else to recieve an interview invite from Cindy after submitting their primary and seconday applications?

I think I have a shot at being invited (28 MCAT, 3.97 GPA, lots of observation hours, good LORs), but I will never be invited if AMCAS doesn't verify my application! haha.

Thanks in advance for any advice! 🙂

Yes! It took FOOOOOOOREVER this year. But, the good news is that the II seems to come about 4 business days after verification is complete!

I'd say you've got absolutely nothing to worry about. I had a 28 MCAT and a slightly lower GPA and got mine with no questions asked. It especially helps that you're IS, too.

Have you been checking the AMCAS website to get an idea about when your application will be verified? In any case, hang in there! There will be a lot of things to stress about this year, but it'll be nothing compared to (hopefully) next year and the years after! 🙂

Thanks so much! Makes me feel better to know someone with similar stats got an interview. I have been checking the AMCAS site --daily? Haha... I know. I'm obsessed--, and the only info I've found about verification is that it can take "up to" eight weeks.

I guess worst case scenario is I'll be verified at the end of the month. I THINK I can survive that long.

Thanks again for sharing your experience. 🙂

Can anyone comment on the diversity here? I'm Asian and I don't really know the kind of reception I would get if I chose to come to a place like charleston. I didn't think about this when I first applied but now it's kinda scaring me a bit since I know the school is like 99% white..

To start, I'm not in the med school, I'm an undergrad here. I'm not sure of the statistic, but we do have this new "INTO" foreign recruiting program that has pulled in a ton of Japanese students. That being said, 99% of the students here seem pretty down to earth and comfortable with different groups of people, you wouldn't feel out of place in Huntington. But, keep in mind, there are some ignorant people around the Appalachian area. I've never seen anything racist around here though. If you're looking for a place with lots of other Asians or heritage/culture, Huntington is not the place for you. But from my experience (I'm super white, but have very diverse friends) nobody would ever single you out or make you feel different. Id say the overwhelming amount of white students isn't from lack of acceptance, but maybe from lack of applicants, simply because that's what the population looks like here. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I've lived here my entire life and have never seen a problem. Like TS said, if you want a major Asian presence, not the place for you. But if you're comfortable with yourself and who you are, you'll fit right in.

Plus Marshall is begging for diversity right now. That's one of the reasons they were on probation (officially off it now). It wasn't about the standard of education, it was bc they weren't diverse enough. Which as you pointed out the states like 80 something percent white and they're required to take so many IS students. TS had it right, it's not that they don't like diversity, it's that not many who fit that category apply!

It took mine 2.25 months to get it verified. They received it Wednesday and I had an interview invite Monday. Ik they still have plenty of spots open because AMCAS is taking so long. As long as your 2nd is in, you should be fine (and I think you said it was?).

My stats are in-line with yours and I got an interview! Plus since you're instate, above a 24, MU is required to interview you by law. Somehow WVU got out of it though. I think it was a condition of MU starting a program in the early 80s.

Didn't realize that they were required to give me an interview! That's definitely reassuring, and congrats on being invited to interview yourself!

They're required as long as the class isn't filled I think. You have to fit a few parameters but I think you're fine!

Thanks!

Just got word that my AMCAS app has processed. My secondary is already in! Should be smooth sailing from here. 🙂

here are the guidelines for getting an interview at Marshall. section "m" seems to indicate fairly concrete criteria for being granted an interview:

l. For purposes of applying to the MUJCESOM, contiguous states specifically
include Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and Virginia and those students who are
introduced to our school through our out of state recruitment pipeline and outreach programs.
Minimum credentials for applicants from contiguous states include a 3.0 cumulative overall
undergraduate GPA and a MCAT score of 24. The 3.0 cumulative overall undergraduate GPA
requirement can be waived in light of an outstanding graduate school performance.

m. West Virginia applicants having a 3.5 or better GPA in both science and overall,
having a 26 or better total on the MCAT with no individual section below an 8 and having no
recommendation below “Recommended with Confidence” will be interviewed by two
experienced interviewers. If both interviewers agree that the applicant should be a first-round
accept, the applicant will be immediately notified of acceptance if space in the class is available without having his/her application reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

n. Any West Virginia applicant having a GPA less than 3.0 and/or MCAT scores
averaging less than 24 will not be interviewed. An applicant not granted an interview will be
offered assistance in determining ways to strengthen a future application.

3.8 GPA but 26 MCAT (8PS/10V/8BS). Was just sent secondary automatically because I am a VA resident. Do I stand a chance this round or should I just wait until next year? Planning to retake in January.

I know a couple guys that got in with similar stats (one had a 25), can't hurt to try!

nothing to lose, you absolutely will not get in if you dont apply. good luck!

Interview went great today! Hope to hear soon, but apparently they don't discuss out-of-state applicants for quite some time.

Very relaxed, everybody was extremely helpful and nice, low key kind of interviews. I didn't even get the "why medicine" or "why Marshall" questions.

Woo hoo!!! Interviewed today AND got accepted 4 hours later! What an awesome experience!!!! First acceptance of the year, so please ignore the overuse of exclamation points! 🙂

The interview process was so laid back that it seems like the stressing beforehand was silly at this point. The faculty, staff, students, and community members present were all so helpful and the program seemed like such a close-knit family that it'll be difficult to consider any other offers.

What a great day and a fantastic program!
