2014-2015 Medical University of South Carolina Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No one wants to go to charleston??

Anyone else having trouble opening the demographic profile or close ties PDF?

How much is everyone writing for the questions on the demographics form for SC residents? Also, the online applyweb.com application says that we will receive a packet of forms after submission. The e-mail I got was for the Demographics form website, but we were told about this form in the first e-mail we got regarding the secondary. Just to be certain, we only submit the online application and the Demographics/Close Ties form?

Yeah I just made my account and filled out all of the blanks for family info and stuff and was told I would receive an email with demographic info also. I don't recall writing anything for the secondary though or seeing any essays on the demographic form.

Can someone post the prompts for secondary application please 🙂

There aren't any prompts. Or at least I didn't see any and I'm complete here. The demographic form has a few short answer questions but no "essays" really.

I just got an MD/PhD packet from there, wondering if I should try and apply there MD/PhD. I've been to MUSC for work and Charleston for vacation, so I know it's a great place. The OOS tuition is horrendous, so there little chance I'd be able to foot that bill, but if I went MD/PhD then we would be talking. Why is this thread so quiet? It's not too late to apply then I guess...

Are you applying MD-PhD at other places or MD-only? If you are applying MD-only, don't apply to MD-PhD just because of tuition.

So I'm not applying elsewhere MD/PhD, I have a strong research background (patent applications and publications- 1st author), so maybe I should have, but I feel like that is the only route that would see it being feasible to attend, does that make sense? Not really? I guess I really didn't consider MD/PhD until these schools sent me these emails/mail about their programs.

For whom? You? I don't really understand that statement.

In terms of applying this cycle, if you think you want an academic career, perhaps you should apply (assuming MCAT is good, GPA is good, and you have extensive research >= 2 years, i.e. not 6 months even if it got you a publication). I believe you can log in to AMCAS post-submission, check the MD-PhD box, resubmit, and you will receive secondaries from selected schools.

Additionally, if you get an MD acceptance this cycle and no MD-PhD acceptances, but still would like to join, you may be able to apply internally at certain schools.

EDIT: So I got my South Carolina schools crossed and realize that MUSC is not as staggering a cost as USC is.

I meant does it make sense that I would not apply only MD there because of the prohibitive OOS cost. Does that part make sense? It sounds weird to me, but I think it makes sense economically.

I have several extensive research projects that have been funded by the NSF and NIH so I have a detailed background in research spanning over 3 years in total across two disciplines. I guess I never thought I was the kind of candidate they were looking for, but maybe I am? This isn't the only school that has sent something about going this route either.

It would make sense to the school as long as you don't phrase it that way. If you say you are pursuing MD-PhD at their school because their MD tuition is too high, they will most likely reject your application. In fact, I would say most MD-PhD programs will reject you for pursuing MD-PhD because of monetary reasons. This is because there has been history with some MD-PhD students dropping the PhD after their first two years of medical school and essentially getting that education free (although some schools require payback now).

It is not really if you are the right candidate for MD-PhD programs as much as is it the right candidate for you? It is long road and unless you have spent significant time thinking about going down this trek, I would encourage you to apply MD-only. It sounds like you may have the credentials for applying, but you have to ask yourself if you are willing to spend and additional 3-4 years pursuing a PhD, then a research oriented residency, then fellowship, and maybe a post-doc. Although there is a lot of leakage from this pipeline, the track was initiated to produce academic physician-scientists. If you want to go into private practice or a community setting, this probably is not the track for you.

The Physician Scientist thread has some good conversations, so go take a look over there.

Hope that helps.

II yesterday! Regular application (No Early Decision). I.S.

So how long does it usually take to receive the MUSC secondary once AMCAS has processed the primary app? Mine was just processed yesterday, and I've already been receiving secondary invites from USC, USC - Greenville, etc. I know its only been a day, but just figured I'd see about how long it usually takes to get it. I'm a nervous wreck!

Thanks for the help! I got the email for the secondary in about a week as was mentioned. Another quick question. I emailed a PDF of the Demographic form to the email address they specified one week ago, but my status page shows up blank next to the Demographic section. Letters have been received and my secondary has been submitted. So should I be worried that they didn't get my demographic sheet, or should I just keep waiting as patiently as I can (or trying to)?

I sent a pdf of mine and received an email confirmation that it was submitted so not sure about what happened there. You could always call the office and ask. They are really friendly and helpful on the phone!

Does anyone know where it says that OOS students can't apply for IS tuition after M1? I know it's been mentioned over the years, but I see there's a 'petition for South Carolina residency' on their website. Am I missing something?

Either way, can anyone comment on financial aid for OOS students? Is the tuition really as high as it's listed in the MSAR?

I've always heard that you must pay the insanely high OOS tuition for MS1 but are then allowed to pay IS tuition for the remaining 3 years.

I think MUSC doesn't allow you to change residency status so whatever you come in as is what you are considered for the entire four years.

Total CoA including living expenses is $86k each year for all 4 years, MUSC does not let you switch to instate tuition while the 2 USC schools will after the first year of paying the full OOS cost.

That blows my mind. I'm second guessing my application here due to the outrageous cost.

Just out of my own curiosity, why do they have a petition to be considered an SC resident on their website? Part of the document states "FOR TUITION PURPOSES: Students who are seeking re-classification as in-state residents must submit ALL documentation postmarked or delivered by..."

Me too, I was shocked to see the email. Without going into detail, I do have extremely close ties to the state. Unsure if that helped me get a look earlier

Very exciting, congrats! I just added MUSC about a month ago after someone recommended it so I'm sure I still have a long wait either way.

Have any in-state people been invited to interview yet?

Not personally, but I know of people that have been there. Radio silence for me so far (complete early august)

How?! I thought acceptances don't go out (according to AAMC) until October 15
I applied early decision, and on MUSC website it says they take action or notify early decision applicants on Oct 1.

I know I'm a little late here... but I just turned in what I thought was the secondary and there were no essay prompts. Am i totally missing the boat?

Hey, there is no essay prompt. Just basic information and then the demographic profile.

Received a II today! IS applicant. Everything complete on 9/10/14.

Not a lot of action on this thread I see.

Does anyone have a clue what the chances are like for an OOS applicant with an II? I obviously know they have a massive in state bias (plus the whole issue of paying OOS tuition all 4 years makes them even less OOS friendly), but do you have a good shot once you earn the II or is there still a lot of culling that happens after that point? Charleston is one of my favorite cities and my parents live in SC so it could be a great place for us.

Accepted today ! IS applicant interviewed a week or two ago.

Congrats man! You'll probably have a lot of great options based on your stats, but Charleston wouldn't be a bad place to go to med school at all.
