2014-2015 Medical University of South Carolina Application Thread

Congrats man! You'll probably have a lot of great options based on your stats, but Charleston wouldn't be a bad place to go to med school at all.
Thanks, its really nice there, close to family. Its a great place. I'm really excited to have the chance to go here.

Received an II today!

A few details for those interested in some perspective:
  • IS applicant; grew up and went to undergrad IS too
  • 3rd academic year out from undergrad (advanced non-science degree and FT employment since then)
  • I was complete pretty late (mid-October).
Anyways,.

How are so few people talking about this school on here?
It's amazing! Charleston is amazing!

My guess would be because fewer than 3% of OOS applicants get an II and only 25% of those end up matriculating (that's something like a 0.7% enrolled/applicant ratio for OOS). Those stats combined with the steep OOS tuition doesn't make this school very attractive to OOS applicants I would imagine.

Pretty much this, SC doesn't have the largest population applying to medical school, and OOS is playing russian roulette with your money here.

I'm out of state and if I get in here I will dance in celebration all day and beg to be reclassified as IS. I spoke to a student who had reclassification as part of his financial aid package.

Hey everyone
Is there a specific timeframe between a complete application and an interview invite? My secondary application was complete Sept. 29th, but my MCAT scores weren't released until Oct. 15th. I'm trying to be patient, but waiting is a little stressful.

Are you IS or OOS? I only mention this because MUSC typically doesn't review OOS apps until November or so. I'm kind of in the same boat as you otherwise. Secondary complete around end of September. MCAT released on 10/15. I'm IS and got a II just last week. So I'm assuming you'll hear something soon if you're IS.

Sweet, thanks! That makes me feel better. I'm IS

Just withdrew here. Hope my spot goes to one of you ! Best of luck to everyone still in the running!

And we're certain that students can't switch to IS after the first year? :/

I interviewed in September. Overall, the interview day is laid back. My interview group included 17 people. I would recommend showing up early. The admissions staff is very friendly, and they enjoy talking to all of the interviewees. Also, they will give you a list indicating who you will interview with, what time, and any specific directions. However, they have admission staff walk most students to their interviews. The morning starts with a welcoming from the Dean of Admission. The rest of the session includes specifics of the curriculum, the financial aspects, and then overview of student life. They will also take your picture which will be used for your badge if you are accepted and will be used for the class directory. Depending on if you have an outside interview prior to your interview day, you will have 2 or 3 interviews that day. I had an outside interview, so I had two interviews. Both interviews were in the morning, but I believe there were 2-3 people that had interviews after lunch. Both of my interviews were about 45mins to an hour and were a one-on-one interviews. I interviewed with two physicians, and they were open file interviews. However, the interviews were more conversational. The first interview was relaxed, and honestly felt like I was talking to a friend. There were the typical questions such as why medicine/physician?, what area of medicine?, but he asked personable questions like what do you do in your free time? what was the last movie you saw?. He also asked who was my role model. He said he was asked this during his med school interview, and then shared his answer. The second interview was conversational, but he did have a list of specific questions about my file. Our conversation covered just about everything from his experience as a med student, why he chose his specialty, and college sports. Between interviews, you sit in the lobby of the admissions office and talk with other interviewees and have access to snacks/water. After the interviews, 2 medical student take you on a tour of the campus. They answered everyone's questions, gave an honest opinion about their experience thus far with med school, and were overall friendly and informative. The day ended with a catered lunch, and you sat with medical students and the other people interviewing. Some of the admission staff hung around and asked how interviews went but they did not stay very long. There was not an official dismissal, and they said you could leave from lunch when you were ready. If you have any questions let me know.

Well said. I recently had my interview there, and I also found it to be very laid back and relaxed. The atmosphere and the friendly staff really helped to calm my nerves before my interviews. I did have an afternoon interview, but many were done by lunch. The tour included the anatomy lab and some other locations, and the students giving the tour were nice and informative. Overall it was not too stressful. The stressful part is waiting to see if you got in! If anyone has any questions you can message me. I'll try to respond ASAP. Good luck to anyone who will be interviewing here soon. You'll enjoy your time there and you won't be disappointed.

Can anyone comment as to how long they had to wait before hearing back on acceptance status?

I heard back in 2 weeks. I also applied early decision and was told we would hear by a specific date so I'm not sure if this is the same for regular decision. However, from their explanation on the admissions process which they address on interview day, they interview every Friday of the month (assuming not those around holidays). The committee then meets the last Tuesday of each month to discuss the interviews from the prior month. They then send decisions out after meeting on Tuesday. So, if you interview the first Friday, you'll wait longer than someone who interviewed later in the month. From what they said, you'll either be told yes, no, or still considering. Then you would be considered at each subsequent meeting until they make a decision which could mean waiting until the spring. Hope this helps!

At my interview they said that they meet the last Tuesday of each month. Other than that, this information is correct.

Not yet. The committee met today. They said they would notify the following day.
So...I'm hoping for really good news tomorrow!

They meet the last Tuesday of the month. However, when I was there I remember hearing that anyone who interviewed in November would have to wait til December to hear if they got in or not. Not all of the admissions staff was going to be present the last Tuesday of November. I could be wrong and something could have changed, but in case anyone doesn't receive any news tomorrow (myself included) you will know why.

I was placed on hold until later in the interview process since I am OOS.
I was really looking forward to an admission there yesterday/today, but I can understand why they would want to wait a little since they only have 15-20 OOS spaces.
I guess I'll call them once they're back in the office to see how long I have to wait for a decision :-/

So they notified you yesterday that you were put on hold via email? Has anyone else that was interviewed in November heard anything or are we thinking they definitely won't notify people until next week?

I received an E-mail at 5:30 on Tuesday that said my application would be put on hold until more OOS applicants were interviewed and that I would hear from them by the time they finish interviews.
I interviewed early during the November interview cycle. Perhaps they haven't had time to review later interviewees yet.
They certainly won't wait to notify until next week since they've already started to notify people that interviewed for the November committee meeting, but if you haven't heard anything yet I doubt you'll hear anything until next week now.

Thank you so much for the information! And thank you to everyone else for chiming in! I'm looking forward to the interview and it's great to hear the day won't be too stressful. Best of luck to everyone!

I interviewed in the October cycle, OOS, and got the same email after the October committee met. But then I got an acceptance on Tuesday, so I really do think the email means just what it says, and that your name will come up again next meeting. Unfortunately I won't be matriculating without some (unlikely) stellar financial aid. Amazing school, but just too cost prohibitive for OOS.

Congratulations and thanks for the information!
It's too bad about the financial situation, but I met an OOS student that was reclassified as part of his financial aid package.
Do you mind sharing your stats, how good your ECs are, and how you thought the interview went?
I'm just curious where I stand with other OOS people who were accepted.

Sure, I had a 32+ MCAT, 3.8+ GPA, and had pretty varied ECs including over 1000 hours as a medical scribe. The interview went "okay." I definitely left feeling average about it and not like I had aced it or anything. I do have pretty strong SC ties though, that I indicated on the secondary app.

Just got an interview today! IS non-trad 4.0 overall GPA working for MUSC. EC's include three years of research and medical/clinical experience. This is the only school I applied to this cycle so really hoping for the best.

Are you not allowed to establish residency after your first year of medical school and then receive in state tuition for the following 3 years?

No if you're OOS you're OOS for the whole 4 years

Same here, unfortunately. The email did make it seem like they might be reviewing our apps for possible admission when the adcomm meets again some time before April though. I hope that is the case, but then again who knows. We will just have to keep waiting patiently.

Accepted today! Good luck to everyone on hold!

Congrats! I was under the impression that MUSC makes decisions on the last Tuesday of every month. Can someone who has already interviewed clarify what the timeline is for admissions post-interview?

EDIT: I should clarify. I'm interviewing this week and was wondering if I would hear back before the new year. Sounds like maybe they made decisions early this month because of the proximity to the holidays?

Thanks! I interviewed last week so I got really lucky because I only had to wait a couple days for an answer. However, if you look at the status report they keep online, it looks like they didn't accept many people this time so plenty of seats left for you! They met early this month because of the holidays and will not be meeting again until next month, but you are correct, they usually meet on the last Tuesday of the month and send out status updates on Wednesdays.

Are silent rejections a thing? I was complete in mid-September, and have not heard anything back. I am OOS and just want to know if I should start losing hope.

How do you access this status report?

The website for enrollment management has reports for all of the academic programs at musc. It's not letting me link directly but try going here http://academicdepartments.musc.edu/esl/em/reports/
And picking snapshot reports and then medical school by status.

Congrats on your acceptance!

The status report is blocked for me. Any chance you can check and let us know how many admissions have gone out so far? Thanks.

Thanks! When I checked this morning, there were something like 90 applicants who had accepted their acceptance and another 30 who have been accepted, but have not decided. Only 10 people have been rejected, mostly out of state. So there are at least 50 seats left. I work at MUSC so maybe that's why I can see it from my work computer? I'll give you guys the exact details tomorrow!

Makes sense, it's probably set to your network IP access only.

Congrats on your acceptance!

As of this morning, they have sent out 132 acceptances. 48 of those people have not made their decision (I am accepting though, so make that 47!). There have been 10 rejections and 1 person has declined their acceptance.

Remember one thing, accepting an offer admission and actually enrolling are two different things.
