2015-2016 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
RE: Match rate by number of interviews received: I wish they'd publish the match rate for interviews completed as well, not just interviews offered. I imagine those numbers are highly correlated, but I am sort of curious, for the people who get tons of interviews, whether they really then need to go do all of those interviews, or if they're just more competitive generally and could get by going to fewer. I knew someone who got over 10 (I can't remember exactly) interview offers last year, and it seems like knowing how many interviews you have to actually *do* to get matched would be more helpful. But, just my 2 cents!
That's an interesting point. I was offered 11 last year, but only made it to 9. One I got sick the morning of the interview (my last one, and at a site that I started having bad feelings about) and I blew it off. The other non-completed interview was with a site who said they offered phone interviews on their APPIC directory page, but then told me they wouldn't do one without giving me any reason. I already felt slightly sketched about the site anyway, and it was a "safety" site so I just blew that off, too. But, that would move me from one bracket to another of "completed" interviews. I'm sure it hardly matters, but you would think the most accurate stats would come from interviews attended.

6 rejections, 1 interview, 8 left to hear from for me....

Speaking of which:

Hmmm, I applied to both of those and haven't received any email from either of them. Maybe that is a good sign? :xf:

Hello all! I am very thankful for this thread, it is so appropriately commiserating and encouraging!

I have had three sites significantly extend their application due dates (one all the way to December 14th!). I understand one of the sites since it recently received APPIC approval. Any interpretation guesses for the other sites? Is it safe to think this means the sites are not pleased with the current applications?

Thanks for your input!

Yes, bring your CV to interviews. You may get interviewers subbed in the day-of who haven't had a chance to look at your info.

RE: sites extending deadlines - might be related to quality, but it also might just be related to number of applications received (if it's lower than what they wanted, for example, or if they have enough people for some tracks but not others). Hard to know.

What's the possibility of actually matching to VA site without pubs?

Got a few interviews, but not feeling good after a slew of rejections. :\

Depends on the VA. If it's one of the flagships, not likely at all. If it's a smaller VA that just does some research here and there, as good a shot as any.

That was definitely my experience last year. Best to just roll with it, and be grateful for what you are offered. There are probably at least one or a couple sites where you'll be offered an interview that you are stoked out of your mind about, and those are great 🙂

I completely agree and will be very grateful even if I get rejected from all the other sites I applied to. I'm glad you were successful in this process last year! How was your overall experience with interviews?

Canadian applicants - hope you're hanging in there! My DCT was saying that the sites have been strongly encouraged to send out invites/rejections tomorrow. I received an early rejection from Kingston yesterday afternoon and was completely unprepared for that emotionally :dead: Fingers crossed for good news tomorrow!

+1 here. Would love some good news from this site!!
It looks like they had multiple dates for offers last year. It's not over until it's over! I know a few people have said this, but I'll be another to add an anecdote. There have been multiple instances this year in my cohort of a site showing up on this forum on one day and being invited to interview on a later day. Until you get the rejection, it's still on the table.

Many people have noted that cohort mates or that they themselves have been invited to an interview days or weeks after the site was posted on here... is anyone willing to note which sites these were if they were not reported and recorded on the main thread?!

Additionally, Re: Phoenix VA, has anyone heard from the PTSD track?

Totally possible. It completely depends on the site and the strength of the rest of your application packet. Matching is all about fit, so if your research output is low, you wouldn't be a good fit at a big research powerhouse. However, there are plenty of VAs that have very little research going on, so someone whose CV is research-heavy wouldn't be a good fit. I matched to a VA with 0 pubs. I think 4/6 interns in my cohort had 0 pubs, but we were good fit for the site because the staff didn't do much in the way of research beyond program evaluation. So stay positive! Any place that invited you to interview thinks you're a good fit. If you weren't, they'd have given the interview slot to someone else 🙂

Vanderbilt Consortium (counseling center track) rejection, letter attached to email on 12/3/15.

I've got 6 rejections, and 1 interview and waiting to hear from 13 more. While I still have a majority to hear from, the rejections are rolling in strong! UGH. What is everyone doing to survive recently???

A healthy combo of dissertating, report writing, stress baking, and Netflix binging (read: I've been watching Netflix until I feel guilty, at which point I take work breaks to feel better. Until I get hungry, at which point I stress bake and watch more Netflix, because you can't eat baked goods and dissertate at the same time).

A fellow stress baker? YAAASSS 🙂

Definitely Netflix - I just discovered Homeland and it's perfect binge-watching material. I also purposely saved interview outfit shopping for November/December to give myself something to do... it's easy to burn anxious energy by trying on literally every blazer in the mall!

I just discovered Luther and several other BBC crime drama shows which have kept meafloat. And Amazon Prime put out the first episode of Transparent early, so that was a special treat.

Just got interview invite to FCC Butner (Forensic track) but I have not been able to get through to HR to schedule- has anyone else?

Has anyone heard from the adult track at Kings County Hospital Center? In previous years, they let folks know pretty early in November. Thanks!

Has anyone who applied to UCSD/VA in the eating disorders positions heard anything?

I have no idea what to think about UCSD/VA. I did not apply to eating disorders, but applied to another track (another one that has not posted yet). I feel there is no way to tell if all the tracks went out at around the same time, or if there are some still coming. I guess we will wait and see.

Additionally, Re: Phoenix VA, has anyone heard from the PTSD track?

I got 2 interview invites after dates were posted, but.....

1. The original interview date posted for U of C was for child neuro (and then I got an interview for an adult neuro spot a few days later).
2. MUSC indicated in their application brochure that they do rolling invites, so it wasn't too abnormal when I got invited after the original posting on SDN.

For some sites (based on the previous dates of when interviews went out, say from 2013-2014 and 2014-2015), I don't think this is normally the case (particularly if it is weeks after the initial posting date). I also have a suspicion that if your track goes out (or if the place just has a general track), you're less likely (although it isn't impossible) to receive an interview....but that's just my 2 cents.

I currently have three places where other tracks have gone out but I'm unsure of whether my track has gone out (as it hasn't been posted here on SDN).

The email said interviewees will be notified what tracks we are interviewing for on dec 7 I think

That's good to know. The problem is I didn't receive an original invite (meaning I haven't heard from them at all), so I'm wondering if I won't be invited at all. I only applied to one track so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it.

Sorry if this is out of place! Wasn't sure if it was worth starting a whole new thread. What is the general consensus about attire for interviews? Particularly shoes. Are ladies expected to wear heels, or are flats acceptable? Moreover, if flats ARE acceptable, does anyone have a particular brand they are fond of that won't be miserable to wear/walk around in all day? Thanks! 🙂 Stay strong yall!

Flats are acceptable and I would in fact encourage them because many interview days involve quite a bit of walking. My first interview I wore heels, and when I was in the airport waiting for my flight later that day I spent the time online shopping for flats that would match my suit. 😉

I'm absolutely in love with naturalizer. Super comfortable.

I second Naturalizer. I'd also add MeToo and SoftWalk. If you're strapped for cash, Target's Mossimo or Merona brands have some flats that are super comfortable (unfortunately, not all of them).

I know a lot of people who swear by Sofft but I don't find them comfortable at all. However, I also have wide feet so that may be why.

Does anyone know when the interview days are for the Health track at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA? I know they said the week of Jan 4 in their materials, but I wondered if someone knew the Health-specific days?

I have a friend who has an interview at kings county so I believe they sent invites out.

So if we need to request a phone interview instead of in person, what is the most tactful way to do so? I'm assuming email is ok if you have had contact with that site via email. Any tips from past years?

Yupp, this is not a fun experience. A friend of mine last year got 8 rejections first, then 8 acceptances, stay strong.

This makes me feel so much less anxious. I too have had more rejections than invites and I'm having an anxiety fest over here- party of 1. Hang in there everyone! I'm going to aggressively snuggle my dog tonight- he dislikes regular snuggles but loves me so he puts up with it.
