2015-2016 Harvard Medical School Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
HMS wraps up interviews end of Jan so it's logical to assume that no IIs are being given out with only 1 week's notice. I'd even say end of this week is a good time to give up...2 week's notice is just too short and most schools book ~1 month in advance.

(Same goes to Columbia for me... 🙁)

Lol I've been stiff armed by Columbia thus far as well, but still holding out hope. Considering how many people they interview, I'm insulted they wouldn't at least extend me the courtesy. Hmph!

Didn't you mention earlier that you got an II already? What courtesy are you referring to?

I think they did interview at HMS, and are holding out hope for Columbia II, and that Columbia (which interviews many applicants) will do them the courtesy of extending an interview...

Okay, I was just confused as I thought they were referring to HMS not giving them an II lol my bad

Any II this week? Maybe Harvard is really done giving out interviews...

I'd like to think (translation - am really really hoping) they're going to do a final big batch sometime next week.

I too hope so... but I know a few people who received II back in November and December and Harvard scheduled them for January interviews. So if Harvard interviews only till the end of January, not sure how many spots there are

Very true. Oh well.

Hey guys, if I have interviews here for both HST and Pathway programs and if I decide to withdraw from HST program because I realize the program is not really for me, would that affect my chance for the Pathway program in any way?

No, they are completely separate.

The HST program is geared toward developing physician-scientists, and if it's not your cup of tea now, I can't imagine you becoming a convert later. Point being: if that's not what you want to do career-wise, then I wouldn't apply/interview for that position. Good luck!

anyone know if people can transfer between HST and pathways?

No clue, though I would think more people would transfer in to HST than out of it. Unless you mislead your HST interviewers (eg you state you feel HST is an ideal fit for you), then it's less likely you'll get an acceptance into that program anyway (such er competitive niche program). Not to mention- it's ethically shady to take that slot with the intention of transferring out; some of your fellow applicants/SDNers would have made for a better fit. Just food for thought. Either way, good luck with your future endeavors.

This is not allowed. HST people take completely different classes than their MD/MSTP counterparts from day 1. Many MD only students do not even consider them part of their class. Everything is separate besides dorms; HST even has their own medical society separate from the other 4 that HMS students are in.

What are the chances of getting an interview this week from HMS??? Since, on their website it said "interview invite will be send out until mid-January"

They probably don't have very many spots left, but there's always a chance!

It's not over until the fat lady sings! We still have 3 more days until mid January. Keep hope alive until then!

Is there a light breakfast in the morning of the interview?

hey guys
I just seem to be really amused by these threads that people talk about HMS interviews and IIs. Is everyone in here really smart? I'm sure they are but since I was reading student profiles in HMS websites and some other places that most of their students are inventors of something. I find this really hard to believe everyone in here has invented something! Are the med students at HMS normal people at all? it might sound funny tho! :watching:

None of the current HMS students I know have invented anything... amazing research / ECs sure, but inventors, not really?

for a sec i was freaking out:dead:
what do you mean amazing research? and ECs? like they had amazing research in their undergrad?

Haha fair enough. Just was curious because I'm staying with a student host and wasn't sure what my options would be for breakfast.
I know there's a starbucks down the street! (not that they have great food haha) but the school (and Vandy) are right near the hospitals so there's lots of places to eat breakfast within walking distance 🙂

good luck at your interview!

Thanks! Is there anywhere in Vandy to quick grab something to eat in? Otherwise might just sprint to Starbucks and get a bagel beforehand

I don't think there's anything to eat in Vandy itself (didn't stay there) but the Starbucks is like a 1 minute walk down the street. If you walk out of Vandy and face the quad, make a right down the street, it's on the same side of the street as Vandy.

Gross. Do not go to Starbucks. Go to the Courtyard Cafe in the Warren Alpert building. It's the building on your left as you face Gordon Hall (building with ridiculous columns). Look for the second entrance on your left as you walk towards Gordon on the Quad. They open at 7:30 and serve hot breakfast. Not expensive at all, food fruit drink should be $8-9.

I went to Starbucks and survived lol. It depends how much time you have / how early you get up (if a lot of time / early, sure, go to Courtyard). Plus, on my day a lot of the students walked over together, so it was nice to be able to grab coffee quickly then go back to Vandy.

Approximately how much does it cost to get an uber from the airport to the med campus?

I was blessed with an interview at HMS in December. The students themselves are more than just academically inclined. They are musicians, dancers, poets, humanitarians, mentors, community activists, etc! While exploring around after my interview, a student invited me a student-ran chamber orchestral performance in the Vanderbilt dorms, which was AMAZING. Each student at HMS is unique and has something quite different to bring to the medical school. They are passionate about their work, outgoing, & great people to be around. I pray that I'm accepted. I never felt more at home.

If you're staying in Vandy, IIRC there's a little food stall that sells breakfast and coffee right by there.

Just called the admissions office and boldly asked when IIs will cease and they told me they typically give them out through the month of January. They said that they don't have a specific end date as to when they stop interviewing. They just make sure to have them done before march. I asked if they interview in February and they told me that they have in previous years. With that said, not all hope is lost but odds are still very slim at this point in the game (well I guess odds were very slim at the beginning of the cycle too haha) but don't give up hope!

Did Harvard say when they release admission decisions? 1st week of March or did I imagine that?

This has been their policy for quite some time, though they typically wrap things up around end of January. SDN is prone to mass hysteria, and I'm glad you called and posted this.

In case anyone is wondering, you can upload one update file to the portal for both HST and Pathways.
Did you call them about this? The portal says "up to 2 application updates throughout the admissions season."
