2015-2016 Marshall University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just wanted to drop in here and put in a little plug for this amazing school! Fell completely and totally in love with these guys--sharp, funny, fun, down-to-earth people working in a close-knit, collaborative community. Great residencies. Innovative students who were given the freedom and support to run with their ideas!!

If you are lucky enough to get an interview from out of state, check them out!!! Good luck, guys!!

Has anyone received a secondary yet? Haven't heard anything yet..

Secondary received:

1) Why did you decide to apply to the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine? If you have strong ties to West Virginia, please describe in detail.
2) Where do you see yourself in 10 years? where do you want to serve or practice medicine?
3) If you are not presently attending school, indicate your employment or other plans for the time prior to your planned enrollment in medical school.

It doesn't say anything about character/word limit. Any idea?

i had about a page for the first two questions... the 3rd i just put a few lines. Overall i thought this was one of the simplest secondaries, hoping for some OOS love

So for the second question, I did the math, and if we get in for the 2016 entry, 10 years from now, we will be completing residency. Did anyone else come up with that for the question? Should we acknowledge that and then just go on with our "ideal practice" essay?

EDIT: I am trying to determine if we should be idealistic about this question, or if we should talk about how we plan to get to the end of our residency?

LizzyM 73, Primary completed evening July 19, secondary received afternoon July 20, secondary submitted morning July 22 and a positive response from Ms. Warren in just a couple hours. I was very impressed. However, since I'm OOS, she said I won't get an interview until December. Anyone with interview invitations?

I received this message at noon July 22.

"Thanks for your interest in MUSOM! Your application is now complete and I must say that after reviewing it, I find it is one of the most interesting and outstanding I’ve seen! We really appreciate your interest in our medical school."
It goes on to say that in state applicants are interviewed first and OOS applicants like me have to wait until Dec or Jan to interview but don't forget about us.

Sounds promising. Has anyone else received this? Is anyone else complete? Anyone with interview invitations?

I have an interview on 10/17. IS.

I still need to submit my application. I've been to nervous to submit for quite some time but I think I'm going to finally work up the courage to do it this evening. 63 LizzyM, IS, rural health experience

Interview tomorrow. IS. Looking forward to the opportunity.

Has anyone been accepted yet? If so, how long after your interview did you guys hear back?
I have my interview in the upcoming week, can anyone offer guidance on how to prepare?
Can you talk about the format of the interview; was it 1 on 1, open file? How many interviewers total? etc...

You have two 1 on 1 interviews ~30 min each. Open file. Mostly just questions about your application. It's really relaxed.

How it's been looking so far seems you will hear in about 1-1.5 weeks but it could be basically immediately

Thanks for the help, its one of my top choices, especially since I'm from the state.

Interviewed on October 10th and got the Acceptance Call from Cindy on the 27th. Really a phenomenal experience.

In-state applicant interviewing this Saturday. Anyone else on here interviewing then? I would be nervous, but everyone keeps telling me how nice and warm all the faculty and staff are.

Just be yourself. They are really nice. Chances are, you are going to get accepted. The interviewers almost did too much talking. They also help you answer the questions they are asking you to answer(lol).

Phew. That's what I've heard from a few people that have interviewed there in the past couple of years. I'm makes me feel a little more relaxed going into it to have it confirmed.

So how'd the advice to relax and be yourself go? It seems cliche but is so true. I loved my interview and visit.

It went really well! Both of my interviewers were not only nice, but asked good questions. The med students that showed us around and talked to us were really chill and informative. I could see myself there very easily! I hope to not have to wait fooooooreeeeeeeverrrr to know whether they thought it went as well as I did.

They are very good at communicating, roughly 2 weeks they inform you of a decision. Regardless if you have any questions email or call Cindy, she's incredible.

Any OOS interviews? I know they said late Nov..... haven't heard anything yet

I interviewed on Nov. 21st too, so I just had a minor heart attack that I didn't get a call or an email. I called Cindy and she said that they only got to a couple of people from that interview group (so definite congrats to you that got accepted!) but that I hadn't come up in yesterday's meeting. She told me that they went ahead and scheduled to meet next Tuesday too instead of waiting until Dec. 15. Hallelujah for the rest of our interview group! Don't have to wait all that time!

Absolutely. Hoping everything goes well.

It was good meeting all of you as well. I was one of the interviewees from the 21st. See you all next fall! Good luck to everyone with interviews coming up.

Last year I didn't get my OOS invite until early January and didn't interview until February. They are doing most OOS interviews after the holiday break so no need to sweat it. Good look guys! Marshall is an awesome school!

Did you get the call last Tuesday?

Wow, I can't keep my weeks straight. I actually interviewed on the 14th and got the call the evening of the 17th.
This entire process messes with your sense of time. I totally get it.

How long after the phone call does it take to get the letter in the mail?
