2015-2016 Vanderbilt University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just got secondary. don't think I'm gonna do it. Already applied to many, many schools

guys I think I finally finished this autobiography...and I received the secondary like a month ago. Turning it this late will probably hurt my chances ughh.

Does Vandy reject pre-secondary? I haven't received one and was verified 6/20. I am starting to lose hope... 🙁

Yes they do. They only send secondaries to ~20% of people who submitted primaries.

Real talk: do you think it's unrealistic to still hope for a secondary if they've had my primary for a month now?

They had my primary for over a month and i just received mine today ( I was a part of the first data transmission, verified june 5). So no, there is still hope!

Do it! If you already got the secondary, your chances at an interview are like 50% compared to the dismal 20% of getting a secondary

Stats

~6700 applicants
~1600 invited to complete secondary
~500 invited to interview
~220-230 accepted

Secondary (there is a rigorous screen)
  1. Write a brief autobiography. As completely and precisely as possible, give a picture of yourself, your family, and events you consider important to you. In doing so, identify the values that are of greatest importance to you. If you have completed your undergraduate education, please comment on what you have done or have been doing since graduation. (1200 words or less)
  2. Please discuss a challenging situation or obstacle you have faced in the past. Why was it challenging? How did you handle it? Knowing what you know now, would you do anything differently? What did you learn? (500 words or less)
Important Dates (2014-2015)
First secondary invite: July 1st, 2014
First interview invitation: August 4th, 2014
First acceptance: December 16th, 2014 via phone call (75% scholarships extended in acceptance offer)
Deferral to February notification: December 17th, 2014 via portal update
First pre-interview rejection (pre and post secondary): December 17th, 2014 via email
First waitlist: February 24th, 2015 via email and portal update
First post-interview rejection: February 24th, 2015 via email and portal update

Interview

One 1-hour long open-file interview with a faculty member. One 20-30 minute behavioral interview (tell of a time you did XYZ, tell me of one challenge you faced) which is closed file with another faculty member.

Curriculum
1 year condensed preclinical; pass/fail. The first year of core clerkships (MS2) is also pass/fail.

Notes
  • Vanderbilt anticipates extending 75% tuition scholarships to 75% of their incoming class.
  • 6700 applications received for 2014-2015 cycle; HEAVY screening for secondaries (only 1600 or so given out)
    • as per the 2014-2015 application thread, applicants surmised that stats greater than or equal to a 3.8 GPA and 37 MCAT were automatically screened in for a secondary. Students below these stats were personally reviewed for secondaries. Note that this has not been confirmed by the Vanderbilt office.
  • 2x waves of decisions: if you interview before mid-November, you should hear back around mid-December. You will be accepted or rejected or placed on hold until February. Another batch of decisions are released in February: results can be accept, reject, or waitlist.
  • Not much waitlist movement in recent years, according to new admissions director/dean
  • Prior match results.

Yes

Yes I'm on my phone so it's hard to copy and paste, but those facts are straight from page one of this thread
Oh and 33% chance to interview, but still pretty good considering

Got mine yesterday as well. Verified 6/27 so they definitely aren't looking at them in regards to verification date. LizzyM 75-78

Verified 7/17 with email confirmation of application received... no secondary yet!

I have a friend who just started at Vandy, and they keep telling me how incredibly hard it is. Their preclinical curriculum is so short that the pressure seems extra intense.

Is it even worth pre-writing the secondary in my case (or even submitting my primary to them for that matter) if my LizzyM = 70? I guess my question is, has anyone with the same stats that's already been verified received a secondary? Thanks guys and good luck to all those that are still waiting or have received their secondary!!!

If you're applying to ucsd they have the same secondary more or less if that is more encouragement

I was wondering the same thing. One year does some really intense. I think Duke is the only other school that I've found that does one year pre-clinical. I can see 1.5 yrs for preclinical, but 1 year...hot dog

I am having some real trouble coming up with how to start my autobiography. I wrote the body paragraphs, but can't really think of anyway of getting into them except for a story about when I first saw a dead patient.

Still no secondary...probably screened out I'm guessing? 🙁 Been verified since before AMCAS started sending out primaries, 3.85 GPA and 93rd percentile (515) with the new MCAT

I'm just sitting tight right now knowing how unpredictable/random this process can be. Waiting on UCLA and Vandy, but have gotten UCSF and Mayo. I feel like these four schools have ~roughly~ a similar type of screen, although I do believe Vandy probably has the toughest one. Hang tight and use the time to write other secondaries and enjoy the calm before the storm! 😀

Haha I know exactly what you mean this process is so unpredictable. I got one of the earlier Vandy secondaries and have received a couple IIs but got outright rejected by Mayo before LOR and put on hold (likely reject) from GWU so...its impossible to predict lol.
