Are there more early interview dates this year than years past?

Seems like it based on comparison from last year's thread. Was told that by my fellow friends that alot of east coast programs will be releasing soon.

Prepare those spam filters!

Yes it's different for everyone - Depends on what you believe your career to be like after you graduate fellowship. Do you want to join a chill practice in a rural setting back home doing bread and butter pain? Do you want to be in PP churning out procedures? Do you want to be the neuromodulation guy at your practice/town? Do you want to do end-of-life cancer pain? Do you want to conduct basic science pain studies? Do you want to get involved with clinical studies? You should tailor your search for a fellowship based on your goals. This is obvious.

For me, I looked at the following:
1. What is the procedural volume and how interventional is the program? - These are two different things. The procedural volume can be high in that you are doing a lot of injections, but the array of interventions may be low. For example, doing 10-20 LESI's, MBB's, TPI's per day is fine but you also want to make sure the complexity is there (gasserion ganglions, trigeminals, ultrasound-guided peripherals, sympathetics, neurolyses, etc.)
2. How many SCS/pumps? - All the residents want to know but all the fellows/attendings hate hearing this question because fellowship is more than just stims/pumps. But you want to be sure that they are getting at least a good number of these so you can feel proficient. And if their numbers are high, they usually have no problem letting you know that they are high. Yes, there are national cadaver courses where you can learn this but there is nothing like learning first hand from an experienced attending in the OR where you can operate together and pick their brain. You also want to be honing basic techniques and making mistakes when you are a fellow, not when you are in PP where time=$$ and your colleagues and RNs are judging you at your own ASC. You also need a relatively high n value of implants before you see complications come through the ED. If your n=5 in terms of total implants/year, it's rare you'll see the 3-5% of postop infections that will need to be dealt with.

Great post as always. So what is considered, low, medium and high volume in terms of numbers for stims/pumps?

Just wanted to pop in and say good luck to every1 this year. It is a LONG application cycle. What I have learned is if you see a place you applied to pop up here on the list and you didn't hear from them you can consider them a rejection. I got waitlisted at one place (BID) and later got a last minute offer to interview 2 days later!

BI = awesome. Hope that worked out!

Appreciate the new thread but I wonder if its worth fracturing the current group following this thread based on just PM&R (unless there are also anesthesia, neuro, psych, ER threads as well).

Perhaps we can just create an applicant interview thread where we can all add stuff like you did (resident type, # of interviews, date submitted). May be useful to help figure out which programs are more friendly to non anesthesia applicants for future cycles. Plus its nice to network to help share hotel and travel costs with similar candidates (like when you are interviewing, if you're giving away an interview etc). Thoughts?

I like that idea as well, I plan to add any additional interviews to each thread to keep this thread updated and also give other PM&R residents currently applying or applying in years to come a benchmark

Anyone else still waiting for their first invite?
I'm right there with you struggling. Starting to wonder if something is wrong on my application

I'm assuming you gals/guys looked over your applications inside and out? Wrote a powerful personal statement? You did what you could to make yourselves the best applicants possible - ITEs, research, clinical performance, attended meetings, etc? Did you choose trustworthy letter writers, people that knew you well? You submitted your applications as early as possible? You've looked at the websites of all the programs you are interested in to make sure you have all the extra documents they want? You applied to a good balance of reputation "weak" and "reach" programs? You need to make sure you've considered all these factors.

I'm right there with you struggling. Starting to wonder if something is wrong on my application

There are 60 programs to go (exactly 2/3). I'm not going to start worrying until end of June....

I'm still waiting on an invite also. I did everything I possibly could. And if it's not meant to be then so be it. I love all aspects of anesthesia and the job market looks pretty good at the moment. Just remember this isn't like applying to residencies where it's make or break. We all have great careers to fall back on if fellowship doesn't work out.

Does anyone have any insight into the Peds Pain Fellowships? I believe there are two - Cinci and Colorado. I understand that they are accredited as Pain Fellowships and you can sit for the pain boards after these fellowships, but i wonder how they are in terms of procedural numbers.

What are all your collective thoughts on a thread similar to JPC2BMD's suggestion, but for all of us? Have an idea but wanted to get a sense from all of you. The whole purpose would be to see what programs might be looking for in an applicant for future cycles and also to look at means to share costs like hotel/ride share. Plus it would be nice to network with each other beyond usernames.

Here is an example:

Applicant Type (Anesthesia, Neuro, PM&R, Psych, others not listed like IM, ER)
Stats (if feel comfortable): USMLE/COMLEX, ITE, something else.
Date submitted:
Anything that stands out on app (pubs, chief position, that one selfie you took with Mike Tyson in Vegas)
Interview offers: #
Interviews with date you are going (can change this based on bolding)
Program X - 1/23/45

Interview offers but not going (this might be helpful for those wanting a specific program and want to give a nudge).

Let me know. I can create a new thread. This process is unnerving. Misery enjoys company.

Let me know. I can create a new thread. This process is unnerving. Misery enjoys company.

I think this would be very helpful for future applicants. I'm obviously on board.

I think starting a neurology thread would also be in the neurology group's best interest. Having said that I would not try to fracture this thread and post any IV invites in both threads.

I'd stick with this for now. It's for everyone. You can post specifics for your colleagues after the match.

I agree. Its stressful as it is, don't need to add more stress by having to sift through 4 different threads/boards!

How many interviews are people hoping to get? What is everyone's opinion on a safe number: 5, 8, 10, 12?
I was hoping to get 5-8, luckily I just hit my 5th one today. We've matched all our residents in the past couple of years but on average they had 4-5 interviews, so that was my baseline I guess.

I have a friend on the west coast who matched last year, he was saying there were people with 10+ interviews who didn't match. Again, we at are the mercy of the match gods unfortunately.

But in California...

Anyone know when Henry Ford offers their fellowship spots, and how many spots they have? They aren't in the match.

Are you saying 10 places in California? I don't get what you're saying sorry lol

California is competitive. This applicant's difficulties in applying to California programs may not properly represent the overall competitiveness of the entire pool of pain fellowship programs.

Speaking of california, can anyone elaborate on their experiences at UC Davis? There were a few negative messages about their program back in February of this year. I reached out to those individuals to see if they could explain more, but they have yet to reply. Coming from the east coast, potentially going to spend nearly a grand on that trip and use 2 vacation days to get there and interview, it would be nice to know more about it. I know to take these messages on here with a grain of salt but those 3 messages were concerning. PM me if you feel more comfortable.

Also, one of those messages re: uc davis was about interview pimping. Did anyone else experience this elsewhere? What did you do to prep?

For those who have interviews at University of Washington - would any of you be willing to trade your dates in July or August for my date in June? I have a conflict and would really appreciate being able to change, and would consider throwing something your way to sweeten the deal. Please PM me if you are willing to make the trade. Thanks!

A fairly slow couple of weeks for east coasters. Hope you guys and gals are holding up!

So I reviewed last year's thread.

In April, 12 programs sent out invites.
In May, 20 programs sent out invites (Making May the "busiest" month).

So we got a long way to go folks, get your rally caps on for the home stretch!!
