2017-2018 Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, MCAT is a joke for Singaporeans in terms of the difficulty of the questions. But when Singaporeans to do MCAT under time constraint, that is another story. Singaporeans are trained to do extremely difficult questions in ample amount of time but not easy questions under very limited time.

Please provide evidence or stats showing that the quality of the students in Duke-NUS has been declining over the years.

Please do not compare Duke-NUS and American medical schools in the American context. If you really want to compare that way, I can tell you that Duke-NUS graduates are consider FMG in USA and residency match rate for Duke-NUS graduates will be even lower than those from American DO schools if they want to practice medicine in USA. If you want to practice in USA, going to a DO school is indeed a better choice.

You can always pay the full fees (without government and MOH subsidies) for Duke-NUS education, after that you will be free from the service bond. No one is forcing you to come to Duke-NUS, everything is made clear to you before you sign the service bond contract. Your European servants example is a very poor example.

God who's right who's wrong what's the real story?

You didn't address your queries during the applicant day with the current students? Well, the truth is that nothing is guaranteed. Specialist positions are for the best doctors, so you will have to outperform the rest to get what you want. Simple as that. Nobody is entitled to a residency position just because he/she graduated from a singapore med school. For your information, you will also be competing with overseas med students from top aus/UK med universities who got the MOH PEG to work in singapore, so competition for residency spots is not just between the local med graduates. The only advantage that you have over the overseas med students is the 'home ground' advantage, where you can start building up your connections during your clerkship years with the senior doctors, who are in a better position to assess your abilities and make recommendations to support your bid for your desired residency programme when you graduate.

Hello Phillyindmed,

You had some questions on coursework and there are also some comments from other posters. As a current student let me try to address them.

1. Yes, there are regular assessments every week. As to failing, that is part and parcel of life. Seniors and faculty are here to help but you must be proactive.
2. "Medical schools in SG probably have the highest tuition fees in the world." Well.... maybe studying in a cheaper country might help.
3. There are a bunch of comments by udgmtg with no reference and he/she seems to have set up a new account to just post these. There has been a poster lurking around with an axe to grind that always creates a new account with negative comments. Haters gonna hate.
4. As to residency, yes it will be competitive.

There are material on Youtube and the school website talking about our curriculum. If you do have additional queries, you can email the school as well.

Good luck!

Hey zaccksg,

Thank you for the kind words. I went back and read all threads on Duke-NUS. In 2015 there was another Pika123 or udgmgt talking about questionable ethics by the faculty in student assessment. Obviously if I was to email a student ambassador on the Duke-NUS website, he/she would just refute everything said there. Considering all the risks and commitment of pursing a medical education, I am wondering if you mind shedding some light as an insider on that aspect of the school.

Just to add on to the answers regarding residency training. If you apply to internal medicine or family medicine residency training programs, you are almost guaranteed a residency training spot unless you perform very poorly on the interviews. This is what I have gathered from my seniors who have graduated from Duke-NUS. If you want to apply to competitive residency training programs such as O&G, Ophthalmology or surgery etc, you have to be outstanding in order to stand a chance.

As for udgmgt, I personally believe that he or she is a Duke-NUS reject or Duke-NUS dropout. No offence.
Hi Combat Medict,

Do you know if applying to a Internal Medicine sub-specialty later on down the road would be as competitive as O&G, plastic etc or it would be as simple as the original application to IM?

Dear phillyIndmed,

I am not sure they would just refute everything said there. There is no smoke without fire but hearing from both sides is important for you to come to an informed decision which way forward. I did not know the student who dropped out in person and I know personally the curriculum is very very difficult. There are two ways to interpret failure. One is to blame the circumstances and the people and the other is to learn and move on. It may be that both are not mutually exclusive. Circumstances and personality could have led to the outcome but taking corrective action could have made a difference. Do remember that those that drop out of school are very few. No matter which medical school you go to in SG, a large majority DO graduate. No one wants you to fail, least of all the faculty.

As to whether residency is guaranteed depending on what specialty you go to, please take such comments with a large pinch of salt. Residency is not just about more money and prestige. It is about a lot of responsibility, working hours and training as well. Not everyone who is not a resident wanted to be one in the first place. People have different priorities and needs in their lives. A mindset that a residency spot should be reserved for any student once he or she makes it to medical school is self-entitled and misguided. If you just go to the Reddit thread on medical school, you will see how a lot of American med school students talk about how they fail to match for residency or match for the one 10 spots down what they actually wanted. Not getting what you want is part and parcel of life. Even the most brilliant people can FAIL to match for residency.

How to weigh your pros and cons then? Perhaps by making a list. What are the things you like and dislike about becoming a doctor. Next look at what is your ALTERNATIVE. What would you do if not medical school. Another pros and cons. I think looking at and comparing your choices against your own criteria will help you come to terms with how you want to move forward in your life.

I'm a Dec MD-PhD applicant and only just got my MD acceptance a few days ago. (Yes it has been a long 4 months for me so don't lose hope if there's still no reply) PhD results are still pending though :(

Stats wise mcats 518, nus second upper, contributing author to one paper + 3 year wet lab experience, relatively standard volunteering and shadowing. Hope it helps!

Anyways I know years ago the incoming students made a Facebook group, anyone knows if there's such a FB group up alr?

So I've been lurking around here for a while but I figured I should contribute something lol. Interviewed in Nov/ accepted in Feb.

Does anyone know how long the financial aid decisions take? Did anyone receive their package yet?

Congrats!

I received it not long after the acceptance. You might want to email the financial aid department about the package?

Hi, so there is this Pre-Med module (GMS1000) held by Duke-NUS that is offered to local univerisities here in SG. I applied and was selected for it. May I know if this program helps in any other way(s), besides helping prospective applicants to make informed decisions to study grad med?

anyone heard back about the merit scholarship?
@kello Will we get a formal rejection letter/notice about this?

American education is nothing compared to Asian education system.

I will have to disagree with you. I don't think one is better than the other.

I believe the American education system focuses on empowerment and development of the individual student. It fosters creativity and personal growth. Asian education system focuses on accolade and grade. It pushes the students to accomplish good grade and become skilled on a technical basis.
