2018 Match List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My schools full list won’t be out until April 2 per an email we got yesterday

post or it didnt happen
It's a bunch of people posting their own matches so it's not really a list I can post unless I copy and paste every single FB post to the thread

Oh and when I mean a lot, I mean a lot for a DO school

Goddamn it I should have gone to RVU.

Waaaaahhhh 🙁

Family Medicine - Family Medicine Residency of Idaho: Magic Valley Rural Training Track

Are we really going to let this one slide? I mean who wouldn't want to be trained in the 'Magic Valley Rural Training track'? This man needs to be my vice dean immediately.

Seriously? No reason to be rude, whoever matched here probably has very good reasons for doing so, and will actually be helping the nationwide maldistribution of primary care physicians by practicing where no one else wants to. As you get further in your career you will realize that matching is extremely individualized, and not everyone wants to be trained at the ivory tower institutions.

You assumed I am making fun of the individual who matched here, I am not. Obviously offering a vice dean position in my future COM is the greatest compliment I have to give!

But in case anyone is still confused, I have no problem with his match, and I have no idea how competitive or not it is. But I absolutely love the name. I am not certain I would want it on my resume, but the fact that a 'magic valley rural track' FM residency exists makes my day. I wasn't even sure it was real, but it is, and it looks pretty magical: Magic Valley Rural Training Track - Family Medicine Residency of Idaho

I wonder if the 'quality' (I hate to measure someone's abilities by GPA/MCAT) creeping up in DO admissions also might have something to do with this? It looks like just about every year from 2013 on the % breakdown of MCAT ranges is shifting more towards low/mid 30's ranges. I doubt it's a huge factor, but perhaps it's contributing to these steadily-improving matches. I know when I was looking at DO schools back in ~2011 (college), the standards to get in were pretty low IMO. I applied this year with a ~3.5 / ~511 and didn't even get an interview at half of the schools I applied to, so I don't think it's a free pass into medical school like some people consider it to be.

I will say, though, as an incoming DO student this year, I'm pretty happy with how the match is continuing to look for DOs. I know it's easy to get excited about someone matching ortho surgery at a prestigious institution, but I'm just happy to see people matching average academic ACGME programs. I think it's easy on here to throw a pity party for DOs - we have all of the worst rotations, the worst matches, etc. Yet there are many MDs out there that would happily gain residency at the University of Kansas or whatever, and rotate through equally "low quality" clinical sites. It's good to acknowledge the steeper hill DOs face in medicine, but I personally think there's more parity between MD and DO than SDN perpetuates. Time will tell, I suppose.

What makes you think the University of Kansas has low quality clinical sites? This is why it's best to actually start med school before weighing in on such things without adequate information.

That's funny. Are you in medical school? Because if not, it's usually best to make sure you know how to read before starting medical school.

I never said KU had poor clinical sites. If you actually read what I wrote, I said there are plenty of MDs who would be happy with a residency at KU, and then I separated my thoughts with a comma and said there are plenty of md students who have poor rotation sites as well.

Good job sticking it to me for not being in school yet, though. You got me there.

Can you cite some examples where MD students have poor clinical sites?

Can you cite some examples where MD students have poor clinical sites?

I give you a quote taken directly from the website of a new MD school:

"instead of rotating through wards in a university-owned teaching hospital, students train in the diverse health care facilities of clinical partners. Their experiences can include hospitals and clinics large and small, urban and rural, working with diverse patient populations. Instead of learning primarily from medical residents, they learn primarily from seasoned clinicians who may have decades of experience."

tldr: rotations are mainly preceptorships not in academic settings, with ample time spent in the outpatient setting. Extremely similar to many of the cons given to most DO rotations.

These sites are the same sites that the local DO school has rotated at for years. I've lived in this state previously, these sites are nothing to write home about.

The real downfall of DO schools is that they are so slow at releasing their match lists so now we have to read people fighting about stupid crap instead of reading match lists and fighting with MT.

These sites are the same sites that the local DO school has rotated at for years. I've lived in this state previously, these sites are nothing to write home about.

And which school may this be?

A new CA MD school just opened up, and I doubt the clinical rotations will be that great. They will be competing against WesternU for their existing clinical sites (literally all the same ones). Also with the case of UNLV, no anatomy lab dissections. So it's not a DO thing, it's more like a new school thing.

Fanastic, that’s ONE MD school that sometimes send kids to non-hospita sites, and probably not even for core rotations like surgery or medicine and such.

Now, can you name me one DO school that place 100% of its students in a residency driven hospital for core surgery 3rd year programs? Just geniunely curious.

Not the point. The point is that MD students are looked at with far more consideration since it is assumed their floor in clinical training is greater than the average DO school. Yet schools like that one exist. The guidelines for COCA and LCME rotations sites are now extremely similar, so why is even the worst MD school's students treated better than the best DO school's students on ACMGE interviews? This is the point.

FALSE. Cal Northstate students will be rotating in Kaiser NorCal which is NOT a WesternCOMP site. KaiserNorCal has a TON of GME and I suspect CalNorthstate will be using this infrastructure for MS3 clinical training. Cal Northstate has also funded the opening of a new EM program in a different hospital in NorCal (the name escapes me now).
UNLV has opened up more GME spots than Touro-Nevada ever did in southern Nevada and they haven't even graduated a class yet.

Meanwhile MUCOM, LUCOM, ACOM, LMNOPCOM haven't opened up a single new GME program despite already graduating a class. Incarnate Word promised to open up 200 new GME spots before the graduation of the first class but that doesn't seem like it's going to happen either.

If the AOA or COCA or whoever, really cared to explore this point, they would aggressively be surveying PD's (whether formally or informally), to determine what it is with DO education that causes them to not interview or rank DO candidates.

Sure, for some programs it's supply and demand, and the very top programs will be inundated with top applicants from the very top MD schools, and even MD students from unranked schools, may not get an interview, but for the far greater number of programs, this would likely be a valuable exercise.

In fact, they are the exact same.

A few clarification, the poster you quoted was not talking about CNU. There is a new school opening up that is basically just taking Western sites. Additionally, UNLV actually just renamed all the UNR residencies that were already existing in the area. Maybe they have added one or two new programs, I don’t care enough to check, but let’s not pretend they opened all these new residencies.

Well you asked for one so.... would you like me to find you another one? I easily can do so. It isn’t as rare as you like to claim and SDN likes to believe. There are a solid number of MD students out there rotating at the exact same sites as DO students. When I was applying I looked into this school, the majority of their rotations will not be with residents and they will definitely not be at teaching hospitals, yes even the cores. All of their students will meet the LCME requirement of having ONE core rotation with residents.

The state DO schools generally have enough wards based surgery rotations with residents to accommodate just about everyone that wants one. Not everyone wants one.

@MADD!!! was referring to CalMed (a new MD school in SoCal), not Cal Northstate.

However, its not supply and demand in a good chunk of cases.

Not just top programs even mid-tier programs do this to DOs also. The top program will be pro-pedigree but not all top programs are like this, one example are some of the Mayo-Rochester programs. Discriminating by school is one thing (and to some degree I am fine by this, if their training is not up to par) but its another thing to discriminate against an entire degree.

To keep it real with y'all..

I really think after 2025 (give or take 5 years) it will pretty much be two pathways with all these new schools and class expansions.

Wanna do primary care?

Go DO. We'll have you shadow preceptors in outpatient clinics to your heart's delight.

Wanna do surgery/radio/some competitive specialty?

Here's our new MD school with the hospital rotations and built-in residency program infrastructure for you to reap the benefits from.

I hope not but man...

Our DO admin has got to step its frickin' game up dude.

Oh great. It’s an md v do thread. Can’t this thread just celebrate the success of our bone wizard brethren? Most of us are already in school so its not like winning an internet argument is somehow going to change anything.

md>do

Do=Physician.

Was always going to happen, unfortunately.

Again, too much bs doom and gloom on this thread. Look at the freaking numbers — look at how many residency slots there are compared to how many USMD and DO applicants there are. Ppl are just complaining because when you add students, you make the competitive specialties more competitive because their slots aren’t increasing, yet fm and Im slots keep going up every year.

Being in medical school I realize now how much of a personal aspect there is to this. Ppl didn’t match, but why? I’ve heard some ridiculous stories here and I’ve said person so and so should not even be a doctor and wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t match.

And on the other end of the spectrum, we had a guy just match into Boston University IM. Is it because he went to PCOM? No. It’s because he went to Pcom, AND got a publication at a local MD school, wrote his own case report with researchers from Johns Hopkins, did great on his boards, and probably knocked their socks off during an away rotation.

With the way the new MD schools are opening up, the lines are going to be blurred even more. I suspect it’s not even an MD vs DO situation anymore, but just transitioning towards school reputation. If PD’s want to take a student from a new MD school vs established DO just because of a title, let them do so. They’d be doing themselves a disservice more than anyone else.

While I agree that DO schools gear more toward primary care, most competitive specialties out there are still reachable for DO students. You can't depend on DO admins to help us out. Their interests do not align with ours. Nevertheless, DO students are still able to match into more competitive specialties and locations. How? B/c we students are constantly branding our self out there - networking, publications, and perform at a high level on away rotations. Our schools do not help us out with jack s**t and still get the credits to where we match to. Don't fall to the all gloom and doom SDN presents you with nor spend the time argue DO vs MD. Do you think that the guys/gals who match well sit on the internet to do such thing? No way, they utilize their time wisely.

Just no. Literally every year LESS and LESS DOs enter primary care not more. The last match has the majority or DOs in the ACGME match enter these fields: IM, FM, EM, Peds, Gas. I think realistically post merger there will be a stall or plateau but unlikely we will see a complete reversal.

I ask this every year, but can mods create a 2018 match list discussion thread so we can filter out all this garbage? The 2018 match lists are a valuable resource for SDN users and it's being diluted by all the nauseating arm-chair debates.

Just sticky the 2018 match list and have the discussion in the regular forum or something. That way people can easily access the information.

Definitely not the case where DO's will be pigeon-holed into primary care only. How about PM&R, Neurology, Psychiatry, Pathology, Emergency Med, and Ob/Gyn? Why is it that SDN always puts these in the same category as Ortho, Plastics, and Derm, then says you're either going to be primary care or "a specialty"? Specialties vary in competitiveness, and IM is very well one of the most competitive specialties depending on the institution. Heck, some specialties like Pathology are even easier to get into than FM. (I say this b/c I see path matches at TOP programs, the same programs where a FM residency is pretty unattainable).

And then we get the response of "but who wants to do pathology." Then I say "STOP portraying your own personal biases as facts on SDN." Just because you want Ortho and can't do it, stop blaming it on a DO school and saying you're now pigeon-holed into primary care. Get yo facts straight.
