2019-2020 VCOM/Bluefield MABS Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They went over some of these stats during orientation, and I'd say roughly half of our class is OOS, mostly from Pennsylvania, Maryland, the Carolinas, and Florida. I'm not sure about the exact numbers for race and ethnicity, but our class definitely comes from a diverse background.

If I could use one word to describe Blacksburg, it would be... quaint. It's a beautiful place to be if you love doing outdoorsy things like hiking.

The workload kind of waxes and wanes throughout the semester, with the first few weeks being laid back and the last few weeks being intense (see our discussion about this on the first page). I'd say in general I'm finished with studying by dinnertime. I never really feel like I can take the weekends off from studying, but most days I do have enough free time for some sort of physical activity and also time to Skype with my SO.

Hi, in terms of support, do you feel like the program provide enough of it when it comes to study materials and presenting it? Do they just throw the materials at you and expect you to synthesize it however way works for you? Are there more than one exam per week? Are there outside requirements / things you have to attend to outside of classroom work?

Good to hear and btw Congrats!! I will put in my app. But, I hope someone who is in MABS program answers this question on how many asians and out of state students do they have in their graduating class...
Hey, so I can't answer your question about those stats but I will say that the out of state component should not discourage you from applying. I was accepted and I am from Washington State.

dont know stats, definitely take out of state students, i am out of state. (out of state students go t AU or carolinas campus if accepted to med school). There are asians in our class.

Wait out of state students only have the option to go to Carolina or Auburn? They can't stay on the Virginia campus?

Mainly because the program has roughly around 130 people in it. If everyone had the option of staying at the VA Campus then that would fill over half of their seats already. So they want to spread you out because they still want to bring in a decent number of new people outside of MABS to each campus.

The professors are definitely there for you if you need them. Some times its tough catching up with them physically mainly because they have a lot going on between teaching us at MABS but also teaching the medical students or back at Bluefield but they are definitely great at responding to emails. In the beginning they have great seminars on different study methods/tips and provide you with VCOM resources for "success coaches" and they even help you make a study schedule.
They try to present the material in a way that we can grasp it but also the material that they present is most times dictated by "is this something that they need to know to be a great physician". For example in biochemistry, while biochem has many reactions or can get very organic based at times, we didn't really go into a lot of the synthesis and mechanism based biochem because realistically we aren't going to be using that in depth when we are actually practicing medicine. They understand that most of us are trying to get into medical school and want to become physicians.
In terms of exams, it varies. During the first semester there are normally one exam per week for a good chunk. I would say that maybe 3-5 weeks we had two exams per week on M/F. Most exams are on monday though.

Ahh that makes sense. I just think it’s too bad that it’s not even first come, first serve for out of state students to stay in Virginia if they hit the benchmarks. I’m not sure if the other VCOMs are on par with Virginia in terms of resources, rotations, and prestige so that’s one of my hesitations.

Thanks for the reply!

Does any of you folks know how they eval MCAT score AFTER you've been accepted to the program. So far, I've taken the mcat twice and my latest MCAT score is within the benchmark. It was the score I used to apply to the program. Say for example I retook the mcat for the third time and it's worse than my second score, will they take the highest? I looked in QA page and saw that it was on a case by case situation...

Seems like a good program to get into VCOM by December, I guess my only hesitation is the mandatory attendance at VCOM.

I assume there are a lot of things to do on campus though since it's next to VTech? How much free time do you guys have besides studying and going to class?
great program to get into medical school and to be honest give you an inside look at just how much work it is. Free time is limited due to the amount of work but i never find myself unable to go out for some time and see a movie or whatever with the exception of the last two weeks of the semester becasue of a ton of exams

mandatory attendance is terrible, if you had an acceptance to a school without it go, if not youll adapt and get used to it but it sucks

and yes if youre not from the states listed on their list for the VA campus, i think its Maryland, Pennsylvania, virginia, west virginia then you can appeal but they wont accept it so youll be going to auburn or carolinas dont plan on being at VA

The three campuses share resources so i wouldnt worry about that. rotations is always a concern.

odds are it is the most recent unless you petition them to think otherwise

Its also important to note that your rotation site may not be in the same town as the campus you attend. Since these campuses are in rural areas, its impossible for that area to accommodate all of the 3rd and 4th years so they have different rotation sites in different regions depending on the campus you're at. For example for the VA campus, they have rotation sites all over VA, some as far as 3 hours away. So you would be moving to that area for you 3rd and 4th year. @Raindrop Cake please check me on this if I am wrong.
Also for the Auburn campus, I believe they have rotation sites even in places like FL.
It definitely is a great program. Its honestly all relative to what you're looking for. As far as prestige goes, I wouldnt worry to much about that. Like most other medical schools VCOM is on a tiered system when comparing medical schools, so no matter which campus you go to its still VCOM.

I’d hate to ask this, but, just how accepting is Blacksburg VA? I’m from a very liberal state and I myself am a part of the LGBTQ community. I’m curious to know what the area is like considering the growing blatant racism that we are seeing today e.g. at places like Charlottesville VA.

so id like to say that our class and the teachers are from all different backgrounds of life and the world so it is a very including community, very diverse. no need to worry. as far as blacksburg itself i have never heard anybody complain of issues and i have never had any issues, that being said im not LGBT. that being said im a firm believer that in 99% of the places you go in life if youre looking for an issue youll find one, if you mind your own business nobody will bother you so. Also if it helps VTech is a big school so id imagine theres a ton of different types of people there that might be similar to you. feel free to pm is you have more private questions. all in all i wouldnt worry about it, my opinion

Thanks!

Btw, what are the grading system like for MBS?

Could you guys break down the "December Review" process? Do we submit AACOMAS to all 3 campuses + secondaries like any other traditional applicant? Is there a formal interview? If you meet the December benchmark when are acceptances issued? Campus preference between Carolina's vs. Auburn for OOS students? Thanks!

View attachment 248006

A really nice thing about MABS is that they also round up for X.95, so an 89.95 for example is still considered an A.

They'll give you a detailed breakdown about this in the fall, so no worries about it now! My only recommendation is to finish up your personal statement and secondary essays over the summer so that you don't have to worry about them once the semester starts. Don't submit anything until they say.

1) Do we submit AACOMAS to all 3 campuses + secondaries like any other traditional applicant?

Yes, you'll submit the AACOMAS primary and the VCOM secondary next year as a formality. You only need to submit AACOMAS to one of the three campuses, and whichever one you choose doesn't matter. Once you receive a generic VCOM secondary, you'll rank the three campuses by preference.

For example, if you submit AACOMAS to the Virginia campus, you'll receive a generic secondary application for all three campuses that allows you to rank your preference for Virginia, Auburn, and Carolinas.

2) Is there a formal interview?

There is no formal interview, and also note that they don't require any evaluation letters whatsoever, not from faculty and not from an osteopathic physician. They view MABS as a "year-long interview."

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the MABS director does meet with each student individually in the fall, but this is a no-stress meeting where he genuinely just wants to check in and get to know everyone a bit.

3) If you meet the December benchmark when are acceptances issued?

I received my "hello yes hi you met the benchmarks and an acceptance is coming" email in late November and my official VCOM acceptance email in mid-December.

4) Campus preference between Carolina's vs. Auburn for OOS students?

OOS students who meet the December benchmarks are free to choose between either campus as ranked on their VCOM secondary.

You've been incredibly helpful, thank you so much!

What are the exam structure like? Do you feel you have adequate time to prepare? Does the exam feel as though it is testing the knowledge that was taught or do you feel like its a constant hit or miss and you HAVE to know basically everything for that subject to get these high grades for benchmark? Anything you wish you knew or would have done differently?

-exam structure is all multiple choice on computer with the exception of one class which is multiple choice and written response (non science course)

-everybody always wants more time but it is enough to do well as about half the class met the december benchmarks so while you may want more time what they give you is enough if you use your time wisely

-exams are in my opinion very fair, but ask 10 people youll get 11 different answers. There have definitely been times where we got screwed by questions or it was barely mentioned and was on the exam but youre going to have to roll with the punches. If everybody did that poorly on an exam question odds are they will give that question back or a ton of people will challenge it and again give the question back. You do not need to know everything, and teachers usually tell you what to focus on or give a study guide although i am a fan of always knowing everything because youre going to need it for med school so why not put in the time now? Quick answer, to meet benchmarks youll be fine if you have some science foundation and put in the work.

-Anything i wish i knew? how much mandatory attendance and dress code blows. Also this isn't undergrad or even grad shool anymore. They treat you like med school students so get ready for a ton of work becasue you don't really know what youre getting into until youre in it. Glad i did this program becasue if i went into medical school out of undergrad and didnt do this program i would have been blind sided and without a gpa goal in med school theres no doubt i would have done much poorer. Also great exposure to material you prob didnt see before.

Hope that answers, if not @ me boiiii @PTPuser

Thanks so much!

Are there a lot of outside requirements for the program? e.g. things like community service or some type of professional thing they make you do / go to?

one volunteer thing second semester for us but it is listed as a p/f class, other than that nothing i can think of. They really leave you alone most of the time.

Good to hear. Cause I'm hearing about other SMP that are requiring so much outside work like professional stuff that it's taking away from their studying time.

When you said half the class made it in the December review, I'm assuming the other half didn't meet the requirement, failed out or chose something else?

ya so i think we started with around 130ish people (not exactly sure), and about 10 or so people dropped before the semester was over so lets say about 120 people still in the program. Of those 120 65 made the december benchmarks and the rest did not make it. These are all ballpark numbers except for the 65 that made it. that we were told the other day

Do you feel like everyone is getting along well or do you feel like it breeds gunners and people out there sabotaging? I don't see why one would do that because from what it seems, if you meet the benchmark, and not a douche, you get a spot. But people can breed competition for no reason.

Lovely!! Thank you so much for chiming in and explaining so many things in detail. I have submitted my app
Can you elaborate more on rotations and and Auburn and carolina campuses. Would they let you do rotations in any other State, any idea if they have linkage with other state med schools? Also looks like mostly matriculants match into family medicine, looks like.

I am also currently in the MABS program and met the December benchmarks......As someone had said, 65 people met the benchmarks out of the 120 people remaining. But, there is also a March benchmark review.......these are for the people who have met the GPA benchmark in December but have no qualifying MCAT score. These people are encouraged to retake the January MCAT in order to get reviewed in March, and hopefully get their acceptances. Overall, I think the professors want you to succeed and matriculate into medical school whether it's VCOM or not. Last semester, the professors would tell us what would be high-yield topics on the tests. Our class would sometimes do an online study guide where everyone can answer the questions and add supplemental information for our test study guides.

Wishing you the best of luck!

1) Can you elaborate more on rotations and and Auburn and carolina campuses.

I'm not familiar with the details of rotations unfortunately, but I found this post on a 2014 VCOM thread by DocVapor (VCOM and VT rotations). It's long but offers good insight into the assignment process. This one is specific to VCOM-Virginia, but I'm assuming all three campuses follow a similar protocol:

"Basically during block 7 they will come talk to you about this, but the way it works is you'll get a presentation on available sites and their rotations, then you'll have 2 weeks or so to make your decision. They will give you a piece of paper, where you have to rank all core locations (and some, like NRV / Roanoke, will have core sites that you have to rank within them). The paper also gives you a little space to state your reasons for your top location and site choices. This is where you would put in the location of your significant other, previous work experience with the hospital system, etc. You will also get a second sheet of paper where you can claim special circumstances (Children in school or with special needs, or family members with special needs, or if you are married to another VCOM student, requesting placement together). If you claim a special circumstance, they will require documentation proving it (i.e. school enrollment proof, physician letter, etc).

Once they get everyone's paperwork, they'll start to work on core sites. If there are fewer requests for a site than there are spaces, then everyone gets a spot. If there are more requests then spots, then individuals with special circumstances get priority, and everyone else goes into a random lottery to see who gets the leftover spots, and who has to go to their 2nd or 3rd choice rotations. So the chances of getting your prime location are dependent on both the popularity as well as the number of spots available. I think unofficially, people who are married/engaged to non-VCOM students with good jobs get a little leg up as well, but they won't confirm that. Long-term girlfriend/boyfriend, however, may not help you out.

A few weeks after turning in your selection forms, they'll send out the core rotation assignments so you at least know where you will be, and you can start looking for housing. You won't get your rotation schedule until later.

Overall, I think they do a pretty good job with it. Sure there are some people that are unhappy, but for the most part it's as reasonable of a process as can be.

Hope this helps."

2) Would they let you do rotations in any other State

They did a small presentation for us last semester, and from what I recall students aren't allowed to jump to rotation sites for other campuses unless there are extenuating circumstances. VCOM's 2018 Annual Report has a comprehensive list of training sites for each campus: VCOM - 2018 Annual Report

3) Any idea if they have linkage with other state med schools

As far as I'm aware, there aren't any linkages between VCOM and other med schools.

4) Also looks like mostly matriculants match into family medicine

Absolutely! Most of us will end up practicing in primary care, psychiatry, or emergency medicine.
Heyy... Thanks again! Very appreciative of your in depth explanations!!

Anyone else receive acceptances?? Or know how many seats are left?

Thanks for the response! So just to clarify we should not submit AACOMAS until instructed to after the program starts? What are the secondary questions? Thanks again !

So, I did this crazy thing this weekend where I drove down to blacksburg to check out the area, and apartments for the school year. Found a great apartment near by, checked out the industrial park where VCOM is located and where another user mentioned rackspace and I have to say overall, it seems like a good area that offers enough comradery for me to grow. Oh and downtown VTech is pretty cute. It seems like almost everyone there works for Vtech. Overall, I'm really excited and too bad that I probably won't stay at Blacksburg even if I do meet the benchmark.

Believe me, I'm trying! Just haven't heard back yet since I was told I was in final review about three weeks ago. :nailbiting:

It took me over two months. What are your stats?

Those that have been accepted, have you heard from Bluefield/VCOM regarding paperwork to complete for the admission process? I was accepted mid-December and have not received anything yet.

Same! I’m still waiting cause I’m waiting for the exact dates so I can sign my lease for my apartment. I’m thinking it might be a fluke when it came to my acceptance lmaoo

Is there a Facebook page, yet?? Lol

I feel you on that hahah ! Definitely holding out until I have that seat deposit paid.

it took my awhile to find a place last year so do it asap. Id be willing to turn my place over to someone if they need and can sell the furniture as well if youd like. DM for more info

Hey, what’s the rough estimate of the start date and end date for the program? I’m trying to figure it out so I can sign the lease for my apartment. Thanks!

Hi! Has anyone been accepted lately? My application is in final review and I am super anxious to hear back.

Hey, what’s the rough estimate of the start date and end date for the program? I’m trying to figure it out so I can sign the lease for my apartment. Thanks!
ah i dont remember exactly but a rough estimate for the beginning is the beginning of august/end of july and the end date for us this yeat is second week of may

I submitted my application in September, but they needed my Fall 2018 OChem grade, so I finally got that transcript in and verified 1/7/19, and final review 1/21/19.

wish you luck! From last year's thread it seems that acceptance were all over the place.

How strict are they when it comes to business casual?

Application was in final review and given the two week anticipated wait for a decision on 1/21, patiently waiting ! good luck everyone !
