2020-2021 Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just wondering, if I have to reapp and I decide to reapp after a year (so it would be 2022-23 cycle), will the committee letter that was written this year be acceptable?
Yea and hopefully you can have another more recent letter from a mentor/supervisor that you worked with over the year.

****, at this point, they need to just slap you with the honorary M.D.

Idk how you guys are mentally starting up reapps. From this cycle, getting WL and working throughout covid I am mentally exhausted. For my sanity I will be reapplying next cycle 🤧
only reason i'm not taking a break this year is bc i don't want my mcat to expire. def not mentally prepared to reapply though

Me thinking about my As

Anyone with pretty good stats (LM 72+) sitting on waitlists after several interviews? I feel like I haven’t been accepted because I wasn’t personable at interviews, even though I felt like I did well

LM 75 only sitting on one WL. I think it was my personal statement and secondaries tbh, I foolishly thought they wouldn’t have much weight. Interviews went v well and when I med w my premed advisor he only had comments ab my PS and writing in general!
Edit: it was also my school list. I didn’t know anything about IS vs OOS #fool. If anyone from the future is reading this make sure you take your school list and writing seriously!!

Let me paint you a little picture. AT my school when the executive committee votes on someone they pull up a powerpoint slide. On that slide is every single piece of info about you. Your stats, where you are from, GPA, background, file scores, interview scores, final review scores, any comments from anyone that read your app along the way. The final decision is based on the aggregate of all of that data. Its so much more than stats at all of these schools because there are so many applicants that have them.

Ya I feel like my secondaries were not good that’s where I’m putting most of my effort of I do have to re app

Resurrected an account I forgot I even made just to be able to ask some neurotic questions for folks sending LOInterests & updates:
1. Are you writing everything in the body of the email, or like, attaching a PDF?
2. Are you sending it to the general inbox or to a specific person from the admissions office that you interacted with?
3. Are you only sending one per school, or a personalized one to each person you've connected with (ie: one to the admin inbox, another to an interviewer who told you to keep in touch, etc)?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts! I've been reading along with this thread but hadn't had a reason to post until now -- cheering you all on! 🙏🥳

I'm currently sitting on 5 waitlists so I feel you. I felt like 3/5 went super well but the other 2 interviewers I didn't vibe with. Just how it goes! Also sadly a good interview doesn't necessarily guarantee admission. They're still looking at other things and how you add to their class

What magnitude of waitlist movement are we expecting? I’m #3 on a WL as of today and don’t want to give myself false hope..

Some are in July.
This^^^^^^^.

Don't kid yourselves. I am a huge optimist and a big cheerleader right now, but that definitely will dissipate over time.

By July, MANY people will have CTEd, or have made arrangements at a school where they hold an A, and not want to move at the last minute. Also, by then, the movement will have really slowed to a trickle. The people getting and accepting calls in July are far and few between, and do primarily tend to be people with no As (remember -- at that point schools know who they are, because they are not PTE/CTE anywhere, and they are by far the easiest means to fill a last minute vacancy).

My strong advice, based on watching for the past two cycles, is to remain cautiously optimistic through the end of May, especially if you are on 3 or more WLs. After that, I really would not plan on being able to attend med school this summer, and just allow myself to be pleasantly surprised if the unexpected happens. JMHO, but this is exactly what I plan to do if I am in this position this time next year.

do many people get off waitlists in late june? or is it quite rare?
Define quite rare. It is more rare than early May, and less rare than late July. WL movement has been occurring since February-March. It is peaking now, and will begin to slow in a few weeks. It will continue to slow from there, right into orientation, but will not completely stop at all schools until after classes begin.

All of my CTE dates were in mid-July; I think it's pretty common.
Just some food for thought, based on what happened over the past two years -- everyone was waiting for WL movement after CTE dates came and went. It never happens.

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. 4/30 provokes big WL movement because it forces people to drop excess As. The ensuing calls from WLs all over the country cause secondary WL waves, as they create new people with multiple As, who then have to drop their excess As.

This continues until all vacancies are ultimately filled with people who did not previously hold an A. After that, you get scattered people dropping out for a variety of reasons, which causes a trickle of WL movement, but nothing big.

Then, CTE dates roll around. These cause people to drop off WLs all over the country, but do not result in multiple As being dropped. That already happened weeks before. PTE turning into CTE does not create vacancies that need to be filled. As a result, WLs certainly shrink as people withdraw from them, but no one is called off a WL because a PTE became a CTE.

I wasn't suggesting to expect to be accepted in July. The odds are tremendously low. I was pointing out that this is how people remain on WL up until that point, and why people are, on occasion, accepted in July and have to break a lease. Frankly, it's best practice to consider oneself rejected at every point until one is accepted. I certainly wouldn't delay a reapp expecting to be accepted in July -- or in May or June for that matter.

Also on the WL for SLU (anyone else?) and very confused about the apparent lack of movement as of yet... From what I recall their WL movement has started right on May 1st the last two years. I was also under the impression that SLU was a school that historically experienced a decent amount of WL movement, and in a response to an email back in March their Office of Admissions even said, "The Committee has accepted a significant number of applicants from the alternate list in previous years and plans to do so this year, as well."

Not sure what this means and definitely not taking it well 😅
At least they said that in March and it somehow is keeping me a little more calm. Really hoping for more waitlist movement after one person who got off the WL today on slu sdn.

I know. I was just using it as a launching point to post something I've been thinking about all day, since I've seen other posts relating to the CTE deadline.

I definitely did not mean to imply you were suggesting any likelihood of being accepted in July. It was just meant to be a soliloquy about how CTE deadlines mean nothing with respect to WL movement. Mark my words, a lot of people are going to ask about it as the dates approach later this summer.

I think he means in the 4 - 6 weeks directly after the week of April 30th which would last until like mid-June, seems about right
Yes, I also think this is fair to say.

It's probably overstating it a bit, since it really is peaking right now. Again, not to induce panic every single day the phone doesn't ring 😎, but, the number of calls per day typically peaks in the first two weeks of May or so.

Don't get me wrong -- it doesn't fall off a cliff after that, but, it does slow down. So, does this mean the bulk of movement is between 5/1 and 6/15? Sure, as compared to the period before and after. But, you can also say the same for any period at all that includes the first two weeks of May.
