2024-2024 Florida State Secondary Essay Prompts:

A. Personal Background. (500 word limit for all).
1. Please provide a description of your family.
2. Please provide a description of where you grew up (i.e. rural area, large city, etc.)
3. Indicate what you do for fun and diversion (hobbies, special interests, etc.).
4. What is a unique trait, experience, or interest that we would not normally learn about you?
5. If there is an important aspect of your personal background or identity, not addressed elsewhere in the application, that you are comfortable voluntarily sharing with the Committee, we invite you to do so here. Many applicants will not need to answer this question. Examples might include significant challenges in access to education, unusual socioeconomic factors, identification with a minority culture, religion, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. Briefly explain how such factors have influenced your motivation for a career in medicine.

All of the above questions are optional.

B. Academic Background and Pre-Medical Course Requirements ​

Choose the appropriate response for each required prerequisite. As a reminder: All prerequisites must be completed with a “C” or better and BEFORE matriculating at the FSU COM.(there is a list of questions about pre-reqs and whether you attended or applied to FSU college (undergrad)

C. Self-Critical Analysis (500 word limit for all).
1. Why are you choosing to apply to the FSU College of Medicine? Please be specific describing what is particularly attractive about FSU COM.
2. What do you feel are your personal and scholastic qualifications for the study of medicine? (optional)
3. If you have previously interviewed or applied to the College of Medicine, what steps have you taken to improve your application? (optional)

D. Additional Questions.
1. In what field/specialty of medicine do you envision yourself working ten years from now? Please LIST no more than three (3) specialties. (500 character limit)
2. Write a short statement describing how you envision using the specialty/ies you listed above to advance our unique mission and contribute to the success of the FSU College of Medicine. (9999 character limit)

when the 2023-2024 fsu thread says the first part of the secondaries is:

does this mean 500 words per question? or 500 words for all these questions? thx..

admit.org has them listed as 500 per question. admit.org also gives percent likely chances of each question being there based on previous years- its pretty useful for prewriting

Anyone else see the part where they are asking you to disclose traffic violations resulting in a fine greater than $200? I feel like every speeding ticket in FL is a bit over $200... any advice?

Be honest. I am going to be. Even though mine was dismissed I paid $250 in court fees so I’m going to be honest about it

oh no section B is just about prerequisites.

to your second point. the speeding tickets is in Section F in the Disclosures and Releases section. If you want me to post it I can do it as well but it is just general criminal background, technical standards, and legal questions every school is required to ask in the secondary.

For this reason, the FSU COM accepts very few out-of-state applicants (usually fewer than 10 per class). Except under rare circumstances, out-of-state applicants are considered for admission only if their county of residence is geographically contiguous with the State of Florida, or if they demonstrate significant ties to the State of Florida. Examples of significant ties include (but are not limited to): attending college within Florida, being a former resident of Florida, having close relatives who are residents of Florida. Out-of-state applicants are encouraged to describe their significant ties to Florida in the Self Critical Analysis section of the Secondary Application."

Last year they took 2 OOS. The other Florida schools are not as restrictive
 
Is anyone actually hitting 500 words for all the part A prompts? My answer for #2 is only around 200, and I'm trying to figure out if I should beef it up a little or just leave it.

We are in the exact same boat. Undergrad accepted to FSU and UF and well … lol.
 
Do any of you know if FSU accepts a Pass/Fail prereq class taken during COVID?
 
IS ED applicant and submitted my secondary 7/14. Still haven’t gotten the email to pay. Has anyone received the email yet?

I wanna know this too. My answer about hobbies and special interests is about 200 words too.

I'm around 400 words for the part A prompts, but I was able to get to that because I used stories. But I honestly don't think adcoms care that you write a lot. As long as you feel that your responses demonstrate your family, where you grew up, etc. comprehensively, then that should be fine.
 
IS ED, submitted secondary on 7/14, no email to pay yet

It’s been 2 weeks and 1 day since submitting. Should I email admissions to check status or will that be annoying/hurt my chances? Have any other ED applicants gotten the link yet?
 
Did you guys answer the "What is a unique trait, experience, or interest that we would not normally learn about you?" After answering all the other questions I feel like there's nothing left

I used a unique hobby and just talked about it. Didn't relate it to medicine, but to who I was etc.
