2024-2025 Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (Kansas City) KCU-COM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted my primary application 2 weeks ago on 11/25 and have not received a secondary application invite despite meeting all the requirements. Is this abnormal? Should I email them?

This is pretty late in the game bro. A month ago, they didn’t even have enough spots to interview competitive applicants that submitted very early in the cycle. Even if you received a secondary now, it would most probably be just a donation.

I interviewed yesterday on 12/6 and hoping for a fast turnaround. I have a few other acceptances and their deposit deadlines are coming up fast but KCU is at the top of my list. Would love to just put down 1 deposit :/
I think it depends, my twin and I both applied to KCUCOM and received interviews, but she's still waiting on a decision (been a little over a week for her)

Did they give you an interview slot, or is it that email saying they would like to interview you, but they don't have any interview slots open at the moment
I got an email like a week ago where they said they have no slots but put me on the cancellation list. Then I got the official invite yesterday when a spot opened up.

any point in keeping my WL spot here if i got an A to one of the state school style DO schools w/ better NIH funding? (i.e., the schools like MSU, Rowan, Ohio). unsure of if i should just withdraw the spot
I’d withdraw and then go to the school in your state. But I will be sad to see mango go 🙁

for current 2nd/3rd year students, are there any 3rd year core clinical rotation sites that are the most competitive? which ones are the hardest to get and is there a certain area where the majority of the students (KC and Joplin) get placed in?

The majority of students end up in one of the KC sites. Any site that is out of state is competitive, Colorado and California sites especially.

I have a couple of questions regarding the waitlist if anyone has any insight.

1. Looking back on the old SDN for this school it looks like WL movement won't happen until May or later, does that seem about right?
2. I put KC as my preferred campus during my initial secondary app. If I am taken off the waitlist, is there a chance I will be accepted into the Joplin campus?

Unfortunately, I won't be getting my hopes up about getting off the WL, it seems like a lot of students have already been accepted but I just wanted to get a better idea of this process.

does anyone know if the matriculation deposit (second deposit - for me due in january) binds me to go to school here? like if i’m still waiting to hear back from other schools? i know the acceptance deposit reserved ur seat but wasn’t sure if i had to withdraw officially in january or if i can pay it and still withdraw?

It doesn’t bind you. You will loose the money if you choose to go elsewhere which sucks but, that’s the game unfortunately. But you can go elsewhere if you decide to after paying the matriculation deposit.

Waitlist movement will for sure happen. It may appear there have been alot of acceptances, but these students may later accept a different school down the road. It will likely be may-june so be patient and don't give up! Sending updated letters and LOI (if this is your #1) can help.

TBH i don't know how that works. They might call you and say we have an opening seat, but it is at Joplin. It would be up to you to decide if you want it. But I am not sure, KC location fills up first from what I understand.

I submitted my secondary on November 7th, I still have not heard back about an interview invite, is it too late, is it a rejection?

Hey everyone, I was luckily accepted to the joplin campus and am very excited. Wondering how the joplin area is as a person of color?

I'm late but I did want to add that this was my first A back in Sept! OOS, KC Campus, turnaround time was about 2 weeks from the interview for me.

Hoping for my II date soon 🙃 Anyone else from the late Oct. wave that got an II but no set date waiting as well?

Just received a survey asking if I am still interested in interviewing (I was in the late Oct II wave).

Hi so I’ve been looking into places to live and it seems that most students live in either the River Market area or North Kansas City area.

Could a current student walk me through the pros and cons of living in either area?

I live in north KC, and I really like it. We live in a quiet suburb and it’s really safe and nice. It’s a 10 minute drive from campus and my only complaint is sometimes traffic getting over the bridge in the morning is sometimes slow. But by slow I mean it maybe adds 5-10 minutes to my drive if I get out the door late. Not bad in my opinion.

I will say I was worried moving here because I read that KC was full of crime and really bad and sketchy and your car will get broken into and all of those things. I have been pleasantly surprised. Yeah school is in not a great part of town but campus security is awesome and I have never once felt unsafe on campus. And because of where I live, I really feel very safe here. Haven’t had a problem at all.

Would you recommend living with a roommate or by yourself?

For current students, any reccs on how many scrubs to buy? Also, does color matter?

Color doesn’t matter. I would get two pairs to start. You may want three or four total.

I have an anatomy lab pair and an OMM lab pair and then I got a few more so I was doing laundry less frequently.

Still waiting for my II date 😪 Hopefully they’ll send a date right after their winter break

- Dedicated is roughly 2.5 months (May through mid-June).
- There's no exact percentage I can give but typically 90% of students get one of their top 3 choices of sites and there are 3 KC sites so the chances are high. The majority of spots are in KC so the majority of students end up there.
- We get a lot of guidance from the clinical clerkship and residency placement team for 4th year, but you have to schedule all your rotations yourself, they don't help with that.
- Summer between 1st and 2nd year is 2 months
- The school provides Boards & Beyond and Truelearn + Uworld for board prep
- The culture is generally collaborative, we hope to keep it that way but every class is different
- I am very happy with my decision to attend KCU and would highly recommend it. The curriculum is rigorous but does prepare you for boards pretty well
With how the preclinical curriculum is set-up, do you feel like studying for block exams is like the conventional anki + practice questions + lectures or is there a different strategy for KCU?

Thanks!
