2024-2025 Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (Kansas City) KCU-COM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
With how the preclinical curriculum is set-up, do you feel like studying for block exams is like the conventional anki + practice questions + lectures or is there a different strategy for KCU?

Thanks!
yeah, that is the typical method for many students

When would you recommend to start incorporating third party materials into studying?
pretty much right away. med school bootcamp is great for anatomy. I highly suggest signing up for the PASS mentor program, your mentor will be able to provide guidance on which resources are useful.

Hello!

Canadian applicant here with a few questions:

1) whats the ratio of interviews to acceptances/waitlists historically?

Are the interviews just essentially screening for red flags, or do they actually use it to cut a lot of people out?

2) whats the interview format? Traditional? MMI? Open or closed book?

3) how are some people getting accepted while others get waitlisted? I thiught waitlists go out when all spots have been filled? Or is it where if they like you but not entirely sold, you get waitlist, and if theyre sold on you you get an acceptance.

Thanks for your input!

1. Unsure tbh but I think it’s like 60% ish acceptances(?) but I wouldn’t quote me on that.
Interviews I honestly think are mainly a vibe check, they like you enough to get this far and now they wanna get to know you as a person. Felt quite casual besides some rough questions.
2. I had 2 15 min interviews with a single faculty, and a group activity. Closed file - something I wish I remembered.
3. The latter is spot on

Hello! I want to apply this month (i know I'm super late in the cycle). My stats are 3.0 sgpa and 3.3 cgpa and an MCAT of 509. Is there any chance I can make and is it still worth applying? I really want to start this fall, so looking for any advice especially from current students who may know the landscape.

Chances are probably pretty low, given the fact that even for people that applied early still had to join a waitlist for interviews back in November/December. I mean you never know unless you take your shot, but I’d say save your money and apply next cycle.

I see, thank you for the help! Based on my stats and the students admitted do you think I at least have a shot or is my gpa too low? Not sure if you attended this school or not, im sorry if im asking too specific of a question!

Your stats probably have a shot but this late in the cycle you are likely throwing money away. KCU fills up their seats and waitlist fast typically.

Your SGPA is very low for DO schools and it is pretty late in the cycle. Doubt it unless u have stellar extracurriculars

OOS II. Signed up for in-person interview on 1/23. It was the only one available.

First off CONGRATS! Were you one of the applicants that had to wait for an interview date? I got an II in 10/30 with no dates available 😢

Thank you!! And no, I wasn't actually. Aw man, have you been able to sign up for one yet?

does anyone know what medical equipment we will be required to purchase for our first year (and which ones the school would provide for us, if any)?

The school will sell a complete med kit prior to orientation. I suggest buying your own kit at a lower price on amazon or buying from the KCU buy/sell Facebook page. You'll get the list in an email.

Hey everyone! congratulations to those accepted !! I just received an ii and I will be so grateful to receive any insight into how the virtual interview experience was like with your interviewers? (Ex : was it conversational or was it very structured based) . Thanks !!

Received the same email I received back in November again today, "The first review of your application did not result in an interview invitation. The application cycle continues throughout the year, so your application will be reviewed periodically. If you have made changes to your AACOMAS application, please email us at [email protected]. You will be notified via email if your status changes."

Are they just reiterating that first email, or are they implying they took a second look and still didn't extend an interview? I did send an update letter after that first email. At this point, I know I am probably rejected so I wonder why they just can't outright give me the R already.

For those of you that have given the interview, is it open-file or closed-file, I have heard mixed responses?

Has anyone heard back with post-interview decisions recently? Doesn't seem like there has been much movement since before the holidays. I just interviewed and I can't wait to hear back! I got good vibes from all of the staff and faculty at my interview.

Can any students comment on the medical supplies that are necessary? Like is buying an entire ENT kit and tuning fork and all that necessary? If it is, are there cheaper ways to get them?

Do not buy the otoscope/ophthalmoscope that KCU says is required. Buy a cheaper one from amazon or ebay, you don't need one that fancy. The tuning fork we used like once or twice and they have extras available so you don't even need your own. You also don't need that insufflation bulb thing for the otoscope, we never used it. I would also argue that you only need the standard adult size BP cuff. When you need a pediatric one, it will be provided for you. You do need a reflex hammer and just get the regular triangle shaped one. There are different styles but they want you to have the normal one.

If I own a Littmann Cardio IV from my clinical job will I need to purchase a different stethoscope, or will that suffice?

I would also add that you should get a lower pitch tuning fork. The one I got that was recommended by someone and it’s too high of pitch to be useful for what we need it for.

I will say I got a super cheap otoscope and it works fine- but my friends that splurged a little bit more can definitely see more structures with theirs. In retrospect I would have paid a little more to get a slightly better one. But I agree the $800 one the school offers is wild.
