2024-2025 Kansas Secondary Essay Prompts:

Why do you prefer to attend the campus you ranked as your first choice (980 character limit)? If your circumstances meet one of the eligible exemptions noted on the Campus Instructions page, specifically describe them here. Persons requesting an eligible exemption will be asked to provide supporting documentation.

1000 character maximum for all prompts

1 ) If you are not a Kansas resident, what is your specific interest in applying to the University of Kansas School of Medicine?
2 ) Please describe how your actions and experiences align with the vision statement of the University of Kansas School of Medicine: “To improve lives and communities in Kansas through innovation in education, research, and health care.”
3 ) Describe your health care experiences that involved direct exposure to physicians' clinical duties and how they have shaped your desire to apply to medical school.
4 ) Describe examples of leadership experience in which you have significantly influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
5 ) Beyond academics (grades and MCATs), describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to address this challenge.
6 ) Give an example of what you have done to make your community a better place to live.
7 ) If there are academic discrepancies in your application that have not been explained in your application, use this space to clarify. Examples may include unexplained gaps in time, multiple undergraduate institutions attended, multiple course withdrawals, inconsistent academic performance, inconsistency between academic performance and MCAT scores.
8 ) If you are currently enrolled, or plan to be enrolled during the next academic year in a graduate or professional degree program, please describe your status within the program and your intention to complete the program. You must also request a letter from your graduate program advisor or from the dean of your professional school. This letter must include acknowledgement of your application to medical school and a description of your status in the program.
Students in the MD program are considered and expected to participate full-time in MD program requirements and accompanying activities (e.g., service, research, etc.). Our experience over multiple decades has informed the SOM that participation in outside activities (e.g., employment, other degree programs, etc.) is not conducive to successfully navigating our curriculum and overall school requirements. Failing to meet program expectations can place the student at risk for administrative action, including dismissal.
9 ) If you are no longer a full-time student, briefly describe your current employment, community, and/or educational activities.
10 ) For Repeat Applicants Only: Since your last application, note any relevant academic, employment, and personal experiences that enhance your ability to be a better physician.

Good luck to all applying!

Just got an email saying my odds are low as an OOS w no ties
Did that email contain the secondary application link? Pretty sure every public school says "we prioritize in-state" or something along that line.

On their secondary they ask for a blurb about why you ranked x campus first, but on their website it says "Applicants’ campus preferences do not influence offers to interview or of admission." Does this mean that our explanation does not affect offers or just our choice? (Hoping for the first one)

Sounds like it only impacts the location and not your chance of being accepted. They probably do this as a means of keeping students in their preferred area based on their reasoning for a specific location, instead of the locations being assigned to people randomly.

I got this email and I am from a border state, but no specific ties to the state. HIghkey I think they are trying to discourage OOS from applying.

I also am confused why I need to request a letter from my graduate program to confirm my status??

the second part is having me worried. I have a letter from one of my graduate professors but seeking one from the dean/advisor seems a bit uncalled for. An unnecessary hoop to jump through.

since my graduate program isn't STEM (it's an MBA), this request was a deciding factor (along with being OOS) that I just didn't move forward with submitting the secondary here.

For question 8- I'm pursuing a 9 credit graduate certificate to strengthen my medical knowledge. But is that considered a degree program? It's technically not a degree just a certificate

For the question regarding “direct exposure to physicians' clinical duties”, is this referring solely to shadowing? Or could I also mention my clinical experiences as a nursing assistant/volunteer at the hospital?

Asking for a friend here, does anyone know KU's deferral policy? Specifically, if someone wants to defer for a year to complete a research project?

Just got the wait til March email... does anyone know if they're giving these out to most students, or if this means I'm likely going to be an alternate? Tried to look at last year's thread and it looks like there was a mix but a small sample size. The website says "Most interviewees will learn their final application status in mid-March." Does this mean they sound out majority of A's in March? Would appreciate any insight!

Me too man, also are you by chance the ortho bro from the first week of October interview. Also, from what I’ve heard most As do come out in March.

Does anyone know if they accept update letters? And if so, would we directly email it to them?

OOS applicants won't hear anything until December, or until they're done with IS
Someone said they got an OOS II, where did you get the information that they don't work on OOS until December/ until they are done with IS. I just wanted to confirm as I saw two different ideas.

"Applicants who are Kansas residents or who meet one of the above “Kansas tie” designations will be given priority review for an interview invitation" per their website.

I also attended an open house and asked; they said that they would fill the instate spots first because the state requires them to have at least 75% of their matriculation class to be IS, the 25% is out of state will be later. There might be some OOS that received II but that isn't the norm.

I also talked to several OOS applicants (current MS) who stated that they didn't hear anything until December and interviewed in January
