2024-2025 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so does it seem that WL preference is given to someone who doesn’t have any acceptance?

We are only seeing what gets shared on SDN.
There have also been some offers to people who had another TMDSAS school already.
From a pragmatic standpoint unmatched students are more likely to promptly accept, helping finalize a class roster.
After 5 pm on May 15, further offers will only go out to those with no current TMDSAS acceptances.

I’m not following - CYaL8Er01 got off WL and they did have a prior acceptance
Yes, they apparently had an acceptance earlier in the cycle but hadn't shared it on SDN.
It's still before May 15th, 5PM. After that time, new TMDSAS WL offers only go to those holding no TMDSAS spots.

is it accurate to say that majority of wl movement for unmatched people will happen after the 15th?

I already have one acceptance, but UTMB has been my top choice since day one. At this point, I can only envision myself at UTMB and not at any other medical school. How likely is it that I will receive an offer at this stage, with only 50 hours left until the deadline?

what month can one realistically expect that any chances of getting off the WL are over?

so apparently the class size is full as of now according to admissions office I called
Class size after May 1 is always full or exceeds depending on how well they predicted yield.
At this point, there is no upward waitlist movement (just one more day) since everyone with an admission loses all their waitlists.
The only movement will be for people giving up spots to accept a waitlist outside of the state. These are primarily OOS students but can be IS students also.
In rare cases people might take a deferred year if the colleges allow.

When OOS students give up a spot, can it be filled by IS students who have no matches

As someone who holds an acceptance at another TX school, is any action required on my end if tomorrow comes and I never moved off the WL here, or will I be removed automatically?

You don’t need to do anything @MrFutureDoc
You will just know that your present school IS now your Texas school.

Welp RIP then, May 15 is tomorrow and class is full - wishing well to those that still need a spot afterwards, grateful that I have one already.

I’m counting only 4 ppl total who got off WL. I’m guessing a good amount of folks didn’t report their WL A’s on sdn. Or UTMB is becoming a more desirable school

I’m saying in comparison to Baylor, UTSW, Long, Dell, McGovern, and TAMU plus I was betting some non-Houston folks who matched here would be hesitant about moving all the way to Galveston
Galveston is only 30 minutes from Houston...

Its the oldest medical school in Texas practically on a beach.

Texas schools get quite stratified right after match. Most of the openings occur due to people moving out of state after that from higher ranked schools but lot of it gets settled around May 1st or before.

Galveston is only 30 minutes from Houston...
That is objectively incorrect. If you count League City as part of Houston, sure. However, if you're looking to get to anywhere inside the 610 loop (say the TMC) you're looking at least in hour. With traffic and all the construction going on with I-45 you're looking at least 1 hour and 30 minutes.

UTMB is also located on the very east end of Galveston island, it takes almost 30 minutes just to get from UTMB to the mainland!

I think a lot of it has to do with Galveston rather than UTMB the school itself
every student I know attending UTMB is quite happy. Even more interesting is that several medical students that I know from other schools in Texas are ranking UTMB high enough to go there for residencies.

I got off of waitlist today! IS, and just saying this cuz I was reading the previous texts in the thread, but I did not match but was offered two other acceptances in the last few weeks (I will be going to UTMB though)! Can someone dm me the link for the groupme?

CONGRATS!! May I ask what time you got the call?

Does anyone have an idea of how many people would be removed from the waitlist once the TMDSAS may 15th deadline passed. I know there were initially 200, so I was wondering if there was a real chance to get off the waitlist at this point. Also, does anyone in the GC see more additions.

How can we know we are removed from the waitlist after TMDSAS 15th deadline?

The only people who are going to be "removed" from the WL after May 15th are people who already had another TMDSAS school acceptance.

The rest of y'all, IS with no match or OOS applicants with no TMDSAS acceptances, can wait on it until UTMB says their class is complete.

Do you know an estimate on how many people would be left?

MS2 at UTMB catching up on this thread! I live on far East end Galveston and have made it to downtown Houston on multiple occasions at different times in about 50 minutes. Construction is improving continuously and the drive isn’t bad at all. I absolutely love it here and I was a bit nervous to move to the island, but it grows on you🥺

That is reassuring to hear, it feels like everyday I-45 is getting worse and worse.

I'm collecting start dates for all the TMDSAS schools-
Can someone in the 2025 entering class please inform me of the date you report for orientation?
Thank you and I will list them all in the Republic of Texas thread.

is being in more than one scholarly concentration allowed and how often do students join more than one

From what I recall, you can be in more than one scholarly concentration, though I do not think this is common. Many of these programs have requirements that need to be completed over the summer between MS1 and MS2 year, thus its challenging to meet requirements for more than one.
