Night 6
January 3, 1999
1:45 PM
After Rick's car failed, he stayed back to recruit a friend to help him jump it. He told Amy that there wouldn't still be enough time to make the drive up today. She told him that she'd find another way.
Amy was, if nothing else, exceptionally stubborn and liked to do things as soon as the inspiration hit. A damning trait, this would lead her to attempt to hitchhike rather than return empty handed to her friends.
She took a thick coat from Rick's closet and left to walk to the on-ramp of I-5. Perhaps not knowing exactly where she was going, she knew at least she had to go north and this was the way to do it. She stood with her thumb out as she believed was the norm and waited. A few minutes later, a car stopped, and the middle-aged male driver asked if she was okay. She told him that she was fine and where she was going. He wished her well but said he wasn't heading that way. Two more similar interactions: once with a married couple, and then again with another older man, neither ultimately stopping to help. After about half an hour of waiting, another car stopped. This one she wished had not;
it was the cops.
The officer told her that hitchhiking was
illegal on the freeways. He asked her for identification, which she was not able to present.
"Where do you live?"
"My home is in Pullman. That's eastern Washington."
"I know where Pullman is. Were you planning to hitchhike all the way back?"
"No, I don't have a car and I'm trying to get to Stanwood."
"Stanwood? That's a bit far from here. Your friends or family in Stanwood can't give you a ride?"
She felt as if she would be walking in to a trap if she told him why she was going up there.
"I... Lost my phone. Can't call them."
"Alright. Well, we have a phone at the station. You can come with me and make the call there."
"No, really, Officer, that's---"
"Ma'am, I'm going to insist."
He stepped out of the vehicle and asked for her hands. He cuffed her and escorted her to the back of his squad car.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the station, she was allowed to make one phone call. Of course, since her bluff was completely false and she had no friends or family up in Stanwood to call, she resorted to her only option: Rick. As embarrassing as it was for her, she asked to make her call and dialed his home number.
After a few rings he picked up.
"Hello?"
"Rick? It's Amy."
"Amy? What's up?"
"I accidentally got in to some trouble. Sorry, I know you have to leave soon but is there any chance you could come get me at the police station?"
There was a long pause.
"The police station? Yeah, okay, I'll be there soon."
There was another pause. "You're something else, Amy."
"Thanks, Rick."
She heard a click and handed the phone back to the attending officer. They escorted her to a cell where she waited with several other women. Based solely on look, she thought druggies or prostitutes.
Rick showed up about an hour later and she was released.
They didn't speak a word until they got out to a truck.
Once inside, Rick explained.
"The Aerostar is busted. A friend loaned me this for this special occasion. To what do I owe the pleasure of this ride for?"
"I tried hitchhiking." Amy told him, trying to maintain her composure.
Rick lowered his chin and gaze down to his chest and rubbed his temples, though she heard a quiet chuckle escape.
"Dammit, Amy."
They drove away and sat in silence the rest of the way back.

4:19 PM
They got back and went inside. The TV was playing in the background.
Amy noticed what was playing and groaned. "Oh,
this show..."
"What? You don't like All That? I know it can be a little crude at times, but it has its moments, don't you think?."
"Yeah, well, I find it to be pretty unsophisticated."
"Really? Okay, how about the Goodburger movie? Did you watch that one?"
Amy tried not to give away that she didn't remember its plot. "Rick, Goodburger is so juvenile. That's my opinion."
Dead is
"Kenan's sense of humor matured a lot on Saturday Night Live, but even on there I think the laughs are forced."
"What are you talking about? I've never seen Kenan on SNL."
Amy was frozen, realizing her mistake. She tried backtracking. "Huh? Kenan isn't on SNL."
"Amy, you just said his humor matured on Saturday Night Live. Who were you referring to?"
"Oh... uhm... Actually, I don't know what I was saying.
Rick pretended to shrug it off, but Amy could tell he was suspicious of her now.
"Well, you change it to whatever you want. Or turn it off. I have to get going now."
She sat on the couch and Rick promptly walked right back out.
