A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got a secondary invite today! I've been writing the essays and I'm really struggling to expand past 300 words or so on the essays.

I don't want to babble on. What do you guys think about <350 words, seems kind of short to me but I just have no idea what to talk about for another 150 words or so 😳

Mine were about 450 words, but I had more to say - especially for the 2nd question. I think it just depends on you as a person and your experiences. As long as your essay is well written and concise, I don't think it matters how long it is.

lol I was so used to reading "character limit" from checking my ps I did the same thing when I read these essay prompts.I thought it said no more than 500 characters. Glad I caught that, i thought it was a little short.

Yeah!!! I was working on this one which is a word limit and I got another one that was a 5000 character limit, but at first I thought it said words, and I was like crap that's a lot of words...

Same, except yesterday for me. Feels pretty good!👍

I know 😎

I currently have 3 secondaries done and 3 waiting for me to do... halfway isn't so bad, but I expect I'll be getting more secondaries in the next week or two.

Is anyone else using Interfolio for KCOM's letters? When I look for an institution it only comes up with A.T. Still KCOM - 2012 and then A.T. Still SOMA - 2013. I called the admissions office, and the person I spoke to said that her main coworkers left on holiday so to call back on the 5th.

Since KCOM is labeled 2012 I'm not sure that is the right place to send them? Anyone know?

I had the same problem so I just mailed it via Interfolio to the address listed on their website. I think it cost $6 but oh well.

Alright cool, I'd like to try to avoid snail mail though. So I guess I'll wait till the 5th anyway since ordering it today won't get it there any faster with the holiday.

Just got the verification email!

Edit: Just "received" and pending now.

me too...put in the code and saw that they have all my stuff too!

I have a friend here and they love the school. Described it as the diamond in the rough, meaning their expectations were exceeded during their first two years here.

hope an interview is granted:xf:

I sent my letters electronically to them and they received them as of today.

I wonder what rotations in 3rd and 4th year are like? I've heard a complaint that they seem disjointed or that there's a lot of moving around in order to complete rotations. Anyone know anything specific from a friend or anything like that?

Haven't sent letters in yet. Still waiting on one.

Hmm, I haven't heard about rotations here...maybe someone else will know this?

+1 to that I always love hearing about clinicals....

OMS IV...on rotations for the past year. It depends upon where you do yours. There are 20 something sites across the country. You are generally at a base hospital for your core rotations or at clinics near the hospital. Some rotation sites have more than one hospital you rotate at and that may be where the "disjointed" and "spread out" comments come from. You don't move city to city though, we all have apartments. As opposed to a school like LECOM in that they don't have a base and often move every month city to city. Any other questions, fire away.

Anyone know the dress code???

No dress code for normal classes/lectures (though keep it classy... 😛 ). For OTM class you will need to wear basically work out clothes, so sweatpants/workout shorts and a t-shirt and a sports bra for the ladies. For anatomy lab you will get a locker and most people change into scrubs and I had an extra cheap pair of shoes I didn't care to throw out when we were done with dissecting. Lastly, you will need to be in professional clothes and white coats when you have clinical things, like some physiology workshops where you use the robot patient simulators and micro/immuno case presentations, standardized patients, and DO or OTM practicals where you are the acting doctor. So mostly you are in normal clothes or workout clothes Tuesday/Thursday, with occasional changing into professional/white coats when you got a practical. The only time it really gets annoying is when you have OTM lab in the morning, a practical that afternoon, and study time in the anatomy lab that evening, causing you to change 3 times. Or typically the last 2 weeks of any quarter is filled with TONS of practicals back to back, so you gotta do an extra laundry day because you run out of professional clothes (like me 🙂 ) Good luck in the application season! :luck:

Just sent my secondary in a few days ago! Still waiting on one letter of rec though...

Me too.. super obnoxious. I try not to bug them about it too much, but I am impatient 🙂

My DO says they won't even start reviewing apps until the end of July/early August so he thinks he still has time to write his letter but I'm like no! Must submit as early as possible!!

What I did was send each of my recommenders an emai requesting that they have the documents in by July 12th if possible and if they can't do it by then to please let me know when they believe they could best get it in by.

Two have responded with a sure they can get it in by then and my DO LOR just went on vacay and said that once he gets back and he should have it to me by July 15 or 16. Just a polite nudge doesn't hurt but remember to be polite and not to contact them more then twice in a one month time period if they are responding to you.

Thanks for the advice. I originally told him July 20th because I didn't realize the primary apps would be verified so quickly (when I applied in 2011 it took 5 weeks to verify my primary app). I just sent him the friendly 2 week reminder today so hopefully I'll get a response.

Don't you just hate it when they don't respond .... and just when your about to give up on them... pop right in your inbox.... Damn LORs .... it is the worst part of the application.

I know! When I first asked him, over email, he didn't respond... for three weeks... finally I just scheduled another day to shadow him so I could ask him in person. And when I walked into his office he says "Oh hey! I got your email and I'd love to write you a letter." .......

I'm like REALLY?!? You couldn't have emailed me back a few weeks ago?!?

I bet I will have to go back in a shadow mine in order to get him to upload the letter.... I think this is just the game the play with us. You have to shaow them to ask and you have to shadow them to receive....

How long did it take for you guys app to get verified after submitting the secondary?

If you mean marked complete... I don't think anybody on here has yet.

I submitted my supplemental on 6/27 and received the verification email on 6/28. I then received the completed file email with the confiirmation number on 7/2. So it took them about a week to complete my file.

You got the code email? Nice. I'm still waiting for that.

Is the completed file email the one where you can put in a code and see everything is received? Or is there another one for "complete"?

Ya I got a verification code that they had gotten my secondary and they give you a number code to type in!

Got the code email today! Checked my app and it says everything is complete as of today. Just waiting for the interview invite then I guess.
Don't they give interviews to pretty much everyone who meets the requirements?

I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know what the interview/acceptance ratio is?

If you mean their minimum requirement, then I'd have to say that I doubt it. There are a ton of people who have the min stats...we'll have to look at the number of interviews given last season...

For the exposure to osteopathic medicine prompt, did you guys talk only about specific experiences with a DO, or did you talk about how you learned about osteopathic medicine too? I feel like I already wrote a lot about my experience with the DO I shadowed since that was the only shadowing experience I had, so I don't want to repeat myself. What else can I say?
