Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard back from UW ? The last response I got from them was on dec 15th, informing me that my application was complete. Havent heard anything after that.

I'm not sure if this is specific to the global health department, but they said they will let applicants know by late January if they have passed the initial review and have been selected for an interview, and will release final decisions by March. So hopefully within the next week or so we'll at least know something. Good luck!

I applied to the epi department. But thanks for letting me know ! I hope they get back soon, good luck to you too !

Quick Update:

Accepted:
Ohio State - Health Behavior and Health Promotion
Drexel - Community Health and Prevention

Waiting on: UPitt, UCD, UCI and SDSU

Rejected: none so far.

WOOOOOOO!

Got my first acceptance, so I thought I'd post it here!

3.6 GPA, chemistry major
GRE: 600v, 650q, 4.5aw
2-year RA at my school, did research over the summer with a health services research group, will be presenting that research at an annual clinical meeting of a major medical organization, 2 years of volunteer work at a free clinic
Accepted: Minnesota (epi) via the website and a letter (small envelope!) from the head of the epi department
Rejected: none
Waiting: UW, Pitt, BU (all epi)

I did hear from someone at UW if I would be interested in submitting my application to their MCH-epi program, which is really my area of interest, so I did. Their website said they only wanted people with 2 years of experience after undergrad and I have none, but I thought it was a good sign that they contacted me about it.

I did apply for the MPH in epi at all of the schools, but UW has a maternal and child health (MCH) concentration within their department of epidemiology, which is what I got the additional email about. That was at the beginning of January, and I haven't heard anything back since then.

Well I guess they are going to make us wait at least until Feb beginning.
Thanks for the info !

Talk about frustrating: I applied to the University of Minnesota (complete 12/23), and is currently under review... But this morning I got an email entitled "Welcome U News January 2011." The email was, in fact, NOT anything indicative of a "welcome" or an acceptance--it was a "welcome to the process of applying to graduate schools."

How much more of a tease could one be??

I keep trying to avoid reading this thread (in vain) so that I don't think about how late I applied to everything. But it's so addicting @_@

Lots of congrats to everyone who has already received at least one acceptance letter! I'll be here, reading EVERYTHING.

I feel the same way! Congrats and/or good luck to all!

When did you apply?

When did you apply?

I pretty much applied the latest possible date without actually missing the deadline. So December 1st for December 1st deadlines, December 15th for December 15th deadlines, etc... I know, it's pretty bad!

I love living on the edge.

This may be a dumb question, but does anyone know if admissions decisions are still made over the weekends? I'm getting totally impatient at this point. I feel like I should be getting a decision a week now and I haven't heard from anywhere for over 2. I'm sure there r other ppl who are also obsessing like I am.

Hi,
I have been lurking for a while here and thought I should post now as I had a question....

I applied to Hopkins on the 26th of November. However I had to get my TOEFL waived and several other formalities had to be completed so that the application status started showing completed only by the 21st of December...Thats a 25 day gap between submission and completion of the application....Do you think that will impact my application?

Also the average time for response from JHU seems to be around 40 days for everyone over here...I havent yet got a response....does that lean towards my not having been accepted?

My profile is
IMG with GPA 4.0
GRE 1440
3 years of work experience with one year of voluntary service at a Primary Health Care Centre

Step 1 score of 93 (which I havent mentioned on the application as I thought it might not go down well...should I call them up and update them about it?)

Also I applied to the HPM stream...

UT Houston status changes on SOPHAS as soon as you are accepted. The email comes later on.

Congrats MPH4life!!! I also applied to Michigan, but for Nutrition and am still waiting 😕 My application was complete and in their hands on November 19... any idea what the holdup could be? Where exactly on Wolverineaccess did it show your updated status?

Thanks for your help!

Hey EinsteinDreams, don't worry! I know EPID is notorious for being pretty quick with applications, so I wouldn't be too worried yet!

If you go to WolverineAccess and (new student business) and click on your MPH application, it will say "view credentials", "view application data", and then if they've made a decision it will say "view decision"

You can always try calling them, Michigan has been SUPER nice with everything and VERY informative about my application status along the way 🙂
Good luck!

I'm an undergrad here too so if you (anyone else) has questions about Michigan in general I'd be happy to answer! 🙂

Ahhh well that makes me feel a little bit better, thank you!! I will keep an eye out for that "view decision" link to appear- hopefully Nutrition applicants will start hearing something soon 🙂 The waiting is the hardest part...

I'm almost positive that you don't get updates over the weekends. I actually asked about that possibility a while back, for one of the programs, and I was given a curt negative. They have to send out emails manually (plus, it's not like any software program would take a few hours to days to email acceptances in any case) and unfortunately, no one at any of the schools I've applied to works on weekends - which makes waiting that much more painful =(

So, I've been hanging out on the gradcafe forum until someone posted a link to this one (I knew about it, but I haven't checked it months, so it reminded me). And now I've been obsessing over it for the past few hours.

Here are my stats:

GRE: 650V, 740Q, 5.5 AW
Undergrad GPA: 3.62 cumulative with degrees in International Relations, International Business, and German
Grad GPA: 3.78 MA in International Studies with a Global Health Certificate
Internship with the World Health Organization (3 months, researching epidemiological transitions in low and middle income countries).
Two RA positions (both health related- one gathering basic health indicator data, the other mortality/morbidity data and trends for NCDs).

Applied: UWash, Emory, JHU, BU, Harvard, Yale, UPitt, UCLA, Berkeley, UNC
Accepted: Still waiting, biting my nails here (received the we're reviewing your app email from several schools).
Rejected: none (yet...)
SOPHAS verified: 11/22
SOPHAS mailed: 12/08 for all SOPHAS schools except Emory (12/15 mailed)
UNC and JHU: 11/22 submitted

Glad I was reminded of this forum, now I can fuel my obsession some more. Though seeing acceptances and rejections is not really the best for my nerves! Oh well, 😀.

What department are you applying to?

What department are you applying to?

oops, forgot crucial info. Sorry, brain has been on vacation since I submitted my apps.

All epi as follows:
-MS/MSPH in Epi: BU, Harvard, UCLA, UWash, UPitt, Emory
-MPH in Epi/Biostat: Berkeley
-MPH in Chronic Disease Epi: Yale
-PhD in Epi: UNC/JHU (these two are me reaching for the stars, really reaching...)

Zjwah- I wouldn't stress too much! 🙂 Between your stats and experience I think you are going to be receiving a lot of acceptance letters in your future.

Thanks JMM051, I'll take all the reassurance I can get. I appreciate it. 🙂

zjwah, I would be very, very surprised if you did not get accepted by the majority of those programs (especially for MS and MPH) . you are a very strong applicant; I'm going to second JMM051 and say you should not be worrying! 🙂

Just a question though, which one do you want to do more PhD or MPH? they seem very different in terms of time commitment and academic demands (among other things)

with those stats ...are you also waiting to hear still?........wow....there must be SOME hope for those who havent heard from colleges yet then....🙂

and I second the two posters above......you are definitely going to hear from a lot of colleges some time now....🙂

Thanks guys! It eases my anxiety to hear all this! Hopefully I'll hear something soon.

@intlhealth2010- My ultimate goal is a PhD in Epi. However, given that I haven't taken any traditional public health courses (just health affairs seminar-style courses while I was getting my MA) and I don't have a science background, my mentors as well as some of the profs at the schools I applied to mentioned that it might be a good idea to apply for the MS/MPH first and then apply for a PhD later on. Many of the schools I applied to will allow you to apply for their PhD program early into the MS/MPH program, so I wouldn't be adding that much more time onto the PhD. It all comes down to the fact that I only wanted to go through one application round and I played it safe since I didn't mind an extra year added on to getting the PhD. Plus, I feel I'd be more comfortable completing the PhD once I have had a few courses (it may be overkill, but oh well). That being said, if I'm admitted to UNC/JHU as a PhD student, I won't be uncomfortable accepting the offer. And I'd accept the a UNC/JHU PhD offer over an MS/MPH offer.

Whew, that was a long explanation!

Anyway, you guys rock, just so you know. 🙂

Hi,
I'm planning on applying to some various MPH programs for the fall 2011. Obviously, with it being late Jan, Im running behind. I am going to take my MCAT in a week and use that score to apply so I technically wont be complete until I get my scores back in late Feb.

It seems like most MPH programs/schools have "soft" deadlines or rolling admissions, with a few (JHU, columbia) not accepting apps after their posted deadlines. I've called my top choices (NYU, Mount Sinai, and Yale) and asked about late apps. They all seemed to indicate that they will review them but cannot guarantee that there will be open seats or major scholarship opportunities. (I care about financial aid but If this is going on student loans then I think I can manage).

So my question is: From what you guys know about MPH admissions processes and how fast seats get filled, does my app stand any chance for acceptance for this Fall?

Im including some smaller programs, but accredited programs (Hunter, Southern Conn State, and NYMC) as back ups in case I don't get into Mount Sinai or they are full.

About me:
Obviously haven't seen my MCAT score yet (I honestly have no idea how I will do at this point). My Undergrad GPA was stellar with only 1 B and the rest A's (competitive liberal arts school). My work experience has been pretty good: one summer in Rwanda, conducting healthcare assessment, and then a year helping fundraise for a clinic in that area that our group designede based on our assessment data (now open). 2 weeks in a Guatemalan children's clnic. 2yrs cardiovascular research at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School. 2 summers bench research at Mass. Gen Hospital. RA in college. Summa Cum Laude. ER Tech in college. Hospice volunteer. Tutored in Psych and gross anatomy. Have shadowed multiple types of healthcare profesionals. Type 1 diabetic, tied this into my personal statement as one unique way in which Ive become interested in public health (specifically chronic disease management) and medicine. Also, I think my recs will be strong.

Any advice or answers to my question would be a huge help! Also, if anyone knows some inside details about Mount Sinai's program (acceptance rate, availble housing, and quality of program) I'd love to hear what you know.

Hopkins is still taking applications for many of their MSPH programs in a number of the departments. The profesional MSPH is almost identical to the MPH (it is a terminal degree too), although it is for people who do not have 2 years of Post Bac work experience necessary for the MPH.

Also one other difference is the that the MSPH is two years, instead of one year. This provides an opportunity for students to do an internship in the second year. I think in some departments you can opt to do a one year MSPH if you already have more than 2 years of work experience....

Hmm, I could be wrong, but I think it might be a bit late to apply depending on where you want to go. I know that, for example, the deadline has passed for Harvard, Yale, UCB, JHU, and Columbia. Of course, if you are qualified for the program (meet the minimum requirements) and the deadline has not passed (look at the school's admissions page), go for it. I recommend applying ASAP though!

Have you considered just waiting out the year and applying for fall or spring of 2012? You have some amazing work logged in and it sounds like you used your four years at college for all its worth. You say that getting merit scholarships or grants of any sort aren't crucial but if you really wanted to, you could use the next year to do more internships and go on more travel missions and in the end, have more options for 2012 - options that were limited because you want to apply so late in the process. You'll also be eligible for scholarships. I highly doubt that you WOULDN'T get into any of the programs if you now, though, because of all the work you've done. But you'll have to move fast.

Also, if you're just applying to public health and not concurrently to medical school, I'd suggest doing the GRE instead of the MCAT, which you can take later if you're not so confident on how you'll do on it. Personally, after having studied for the MCATs, the GRE math and reading passages were relatively easier for me. If you DO take the MCAT, make sure that the public health schools you want take MCAT scores. I know that not ALL of them do.

Just my thoughts.

last year my results showed up on SOPHAS first.....but the scholarship was not mentioned on SOPHAS, I had completed all parts of the application including the supplemental health forms on the 21st Dec...my results on SOPHAS changed around the new year ( I am not sure of the date as SOPHAS has expired last years records...but it was around the New Year as that was my first acceptance and I was happy to start the year off on a good note)
I got a very short note confirming my acceptance within another 2 weeks on (21st Jan)
and the final email with the admission packet and the scholarship decision on the 29th of Jan...The hard copies of the admission decision, schol confirmation and the response form came much later
I had applied to MHA and my classmate to Epi...both of us got all our decisions within the same timeframe... hope that helps

Just got my first acceptance- UPitt! I got an email that my application was under review on Dec 13, and then another this morning (Jan 24) that I have been accepted and the official acceptance letter is in the mail.

So nice to finally hear something!

Congrats on your acceptance zjwah! 🙂

FYI for those that applied to JHU for the MSPH, they said it takes about 10 weeks from the time the application is forwarded to the committee until you hear back 🙂 Don't know if this is old news, but I certainly didn't know this!

I checked my application status. And it shows:

A decision has been made. You will be receiving an official letter in the mail.

What does this mean?

Hmm...not sure, what program did you apply for? It could very well be different for all programs!

Hi vienna4u, I esubmit JHU on 1/11. Didn't see my WES evaluation on the site although they said my official transcripts were completed. Emailed already but have not received any reply. JH takes quite long to reply emails🙁

when did you esubmit your application to JHU?

Finally heard from Emory this morning (via phone call, opus updated a few hours later)

I'm in!!! HPM!! MPH (not MSPH as the confusing phone call said)

yay.

You can call them between 9 -12 EST ...I had to do that too when they would not respond to repeated Email queries about my Toefl not having been waived
They waived it while I was on the phone itself...I think they reply quicker that way..

and sorry to bother again...but what date did your acceptance come on?was it in the 6 week period ilke everyone here?

does that mean the completed application or the esubmitted one? Mine had a difference of around a month 😕
