Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When I asked I was told that they decide in early March who will be invited to interview for scholarships, they will interview those people in mid-march, interviewees will be "encouraged" to attend Visit Emory, and then decisions will be announced after Visit Emory (which is March 24-25). I was told that financial aid packets for students not interviewing for scholarships will be sent out sometime in mid-to-late March (this would include work study, subsidized and unsubsidized loan offers, etc). They also said that they don't start downloading FAFSA info until early/mid-February (so now I guess).

Good Luck!! I'll cross my fingers for both of us 🙂

You're always a bundle of knowledge~! Thanks for the response.

It took ~2 weeks between UCLA sending me an email saying the received my application/it was complete to receiving my acceptance. They let me know via email (initial email saying the recommended me for admission, then a final one saying I was in this past week). Hope this helps!

Still waiting on Cal, hope to hear soon so I know if I'll be living in San Francisco (and commuting to Cal) or LA!

me too... I applied to UCLA early November for health services and received info that my app was forwarded to the department to review waayyy back on 12/8/10... no news at all either. :/ getting quite nervous!

has anybody heard from UCB as well?

I'm still waiting on Berkeley too (health and social behavior)! Seems like they release a lot of their decisions later than some of the other schools based on last year's threads.

Good luck to you both!

tomorrow is a big day!

Oi. U Pitts "Visit GSPH" overlaps with "Visit Emory". Oh well, sorry Pitts.

Has anyone realized that Yale, Michigan, and Emory are ALL having their Admitted Student Day on March 25th? ALL of them. At least for Epi. Sheesh. 😕

I had the exact same thought when I got UPitt's invite today. I guess there wouldn't be much inter-school coordination in that respect. That's one way to expedite my decision-making process!

GW was kind enough to have theirs the next day on the 26th. I was really grateful for the Saturday because of work. But will be going to Yale's on the 25th, hopefully work will understand.

That is quite a conundrum. 😱 They aren't exactly driving distance apart. Which one are you going to?

That is the case with Columbia too, although they do offer an alternate date on April 8. However, I would much rather go during March (April is a bit late considering the decision deadline is April 15!)

Many of the schools will host you on a separate day and give you a tour, meet with a student, faculty, etc.

While it's terrible that most are on the exact same day there were many people that did a tour of sorts, visiting all the open houses (Tulane, Columbia, Emory, GW) in a row. Let me tell you, they were tired.

Does anyone know when UW's visit day is (health policy concentration)?

I just found out this morning (via email) that I was accepted at UCLA for Community Health Sciences!

So far:

Accepted: Columbia, UCLA
Rejected: None, yet...
Waiting: UC Berkeley, Harvard, BU, UIC, GW

It's definitely intentional. My nursing schools are doing that too!

mine says it's due 3/15...i wonder if people that were offered a merit-scholarship have early dates they need to decide by? I'm not sure if i can make a decision by 3/15...

Hey anthro. Checked with the admissions office this morning and they do require scholarship recipients to make their decisions earlier so that they can select someone else to grant the scholarship if necessary. Does feel like a time crunch though, especially if you're still waiting to hear from other schools!!

Coffeeforme, congrats! Do you mind sharing your stats? Were the other concentrations you chose related to community health/health behavior?

Has anyone else applied to Johns Hopkins for an MHS and not received an admission decsion? It feels like its been forever. I submitted my application on December 6th and it was sent to the committee for review on December 28th. Anyone else in the same boat?

I applied MSPH (I think that's what they are calling MHS now?) in International Health/PCMI track. I submitted on Dec. 31 though, sent for review on Jan. 11, so I figure I probably have another month of waiting to do. It says 8-10 weeks on the website, and I called them yesterday to try to get a better estimate. They said it varies by department but for mine probably 6-8 is a good estimate. They were really nice, you might want to give them a call.

I feel like I'm answering a lot of these "anybody else still waiting" posts....

I'm really happy for all of you with acceptances, but as I sit here neurotically hitting refresh, I'm starting to feel like the nerdy kid standing in the corner picked last in gym!

Yup! Mines been in review since Nov. 4th... I called and whoever I spoke with was a bit snippy... pretty much told me to hold tight... that they didnt start actually looking at the pool till after the final due date

I also applied to the MSPH in International Health at Hopkins. My application was received 11/1 and I got my acceptance 1/17, so it definitely takes at least 6 weeks.

Thanks, Fernweh!

I applied to all health behavior/community health sciences programs.

I've been a little wary of posting my stats, but if it will help other people, then here they are:

Undergrad: BA in Anthropology
GPA: 3.3
GREs: 82% - V, 78% - Q, 76% (I think...) - AWA

If you want to know more details, feel free to PM me!

After all my doubting, and spouting, and a little bit of pouting:

Dear Ms. Swaffles:

Congratulations on your acceptance to the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health!

I did a silent scream in my office for as long as is possible.

I'm in Columbia for MPH Epidemiology!

^_^

On another note, someone said BU was sending out decisions today...I don't dare call them and ask but has anyone heard any updated news?

Just a heads up, got news today from Columbia: unfortunately, a rejection letter.🙁 . Wanted to let folks know to check today - hopefully good news for some.

Thanks you guys!

I haven't heard any updates since I called last week, but good news from BU today will possibly give me a heart attack at the moment. So would bad news, haha.

Just for funsies I called BU admissions a few minutes ago. I was told no decision has been reached for my application, even though I applied in mid-October. Hmm. Hopefully I am an outlier and the rest of you will start hearing soon!

gah mid october?! haha my december 1 application has no chance...

Congrats Swaffles!

MPHSalud-Thanks for the heads up and I'm sure you'll get good news soon!

After an email that my decision was ready that nearly induced a heart attack:

I just found out I got into Columbia for MPH in sociomedical sciences-social science research in public health w/ merit scholarship....right after I said I felt like the kid picked last in gym!

Hi there! I'm new to this board, and pretty new to public health (came to be interested in the field by way of psychology). I applied to a few MPH programs with Behavioral Sciences concentrations/depts. I'm looking for programs that provide good exposure to the core areas and would offer flexibility post-graduation (ex: PhD vs. job in health policy -- still undecided).

Status so far:
Accepted: Michigan (HBHE - accepted 2/2); JHU (general MPH - accepted 1/27)
Still waiting: Columbia (SMS); Berkeley (HSB); UCLA (CHS); UNC-CH (HBHE)

Question for the experts: I'm leaning towards Hopkins but am noticing that I haven't seen much on the board about their general MPH -- most people seem to have applied for MHS or MSPH. Is there something about the general MPH that I am missing? I know it's not as focused as others but thought of this as a good way to gain experience in all areas -- is this not looked upon favorably in the field? Any advice appreciated!

I'm no expert, but for what it's worth, Hopkins general MPH was my top choice. I accepted their offer very quickly in order to start planning ahead and get housing. Also, they have a bunch of concentrations you can do. I think it's an advantage that you aren't locked into a program from the onset, in case your interests shift. Besides, they are number 1 per USN&WR.

Congrats Swaffles!

Yay, symphonyinc11! Congrats!

In at Columbia for MPH Epidemiology! I'm pretty stoked. 🙂

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that BU has started to send out notification letters. Today, I received my acceptance letter + "merit award" via snail mail (the letter was dated February 10). I had applied to BU's Health Policy & Management program on November 31. I live near BU, so it only took a day for the letter to arrive.

Good luck to all! 🙂

Hello all,

I found this forum yesterday while googling for MPH acceptance. I am writing my first post today as I just received acceptance to Columbia's MPH in Health Policy and Management program.

I am an int'l student, so no financial aid for me 🙁 But still I am very happy.

Good luck to all of you and congratulations to all of you who have got accepted to schools so far!

Congrat!!! Just out of curiosity, do you live on the east coast? I don't know how long it takes for mail to get across the country.

When did you submit your application?

I just called BU and was told there hasn't been a decision on my application yet, but there should be soon. They told me a couple weeks ago that my decision would be in the first batch.....apparently not. Back to waiting!

UMich MPH in biostat

so excited to see the decision page!! a minute ago i was still feeling like being abandoned by the whole world now at least i can have a place to go! 🙂

i'm an intl student studying biol, zero experience in PH which i was pretty upset about 😉

good luck to everyone here in the next couple of weeks!

That is quite a conundrum. 😱 They aren't exactly driving distance apart. Which one are you going to?

Since I live in Atlanta and have already been to Emory numerous times, I'll probably head on up to Yale since I'm deliberating between Emory and Yale. Michigan is a relatively distant 3rd, as I can't really get excited about most of their faculty's research interests.

Yet another lurker emerges!

Just checked my decision status and found out I got into UCLA for CHS! I'm ready to make a transition to west coast from the freezing east! I'm so excited! I'm coming straight out of undergrad so I wasn't expecting much.

Acceptances: UCLA (CHS), USC, Emory(HP&M)
Rejections: Yale (meh, not my first choice anyway!)
Waiting: Columbia and Boston

I got an informal letter from Boston University today letting me know that I'm in! When I visited last week they knew unofficially but couldn't tell me until the letter was printed. So excited!

Thanks, Fernweh!

Wow, thank you - it actually was pretty informative. I'm coming from an anthropology background, too! I haven't applied yet, I'm planning to in the fall, still deciding whether my interests fall more in line with epidemiology or community health/health behavior (leaning towards this). 🙂

I was just curious because it seems like many of the posters here are more inclined towards pursuing epidemiology and I haven't seen too many people discussing programs like CHS - or even UCLA acceptances period, though I suspect that will change soon.

Hi,

Congrats to everyone who has received acceptances! Great work!

I applied to four schools through SOPHAS towards the end of January and I received confirmation from two of them within 48 hours. It took UIC over two weeks to confirm receipt of my application and I think they only replied because I emailed them. However, I still haven't received a confirmation from Tulane. I emailed them as well but I haven't heard anything.

I'm the most interested in Tulane and I am concerned that I am not hearing anything. Their website even says how happy they are to help you through the admissions process. Has anyone else had this experience? It makes me wonder if they are slow to make a decision as well.

Thanks!

I also applied to Tulane and have not heard anything yet. However, I just submitted my application on 2/01 so I'm not too worried yet.

Which 2 schools gave you confirmation?

Tulane didn't confirm receipt of my application too. I emailed them 2-3 weeks ago and they said my application is under reviewed. SOPHAS sent my application to Tulane in Dec 13 and untill now, no news. So,don't worry too much.
By the way, I've just got admission from UT-Houston for PhD Epi. Very very excited because I come straight from undergraduate 🙂 🙂

If you read their SOPHAS FAQ page, http://www.sph.tulane.edu/publichealth/prospective-students/sophas_faq_apply_now.cfm, they say they don't confirm receipt of applications. I called the department I applied to, and they then confirmed that they had my completed application and didn't seem annoyed that I called. I suggest calling over e-mail.
