Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone else heard from Harvard?

Nope, but I applied to the M.S. program rather than the MPH.

Internal sources tell me they're in the process of reviewing. Maybe they're rolling out decisions in batches.

Hi,

Congrats to everyone who has received acceptances! Great work!

I applied to four schools through SOPHAS towards the end of January and I received confirmation from two of them within 48 hours. It took UIC over two weeks to confirm receipt of my application and I think they only replied because I emailed them. However, I still haven't received a confirmation from Tulane. I emailed them as well but I haven't heard anything.

I'm the most interested in Tulane and I am concerned that I am not hearing anything. Their website even says how happy they are to help you through the admissions process. Has anyone else had this experience? It makes me wonder if they are slow to make a decision as well.

Thanks!

Hey Jaya! I was sneaky and opted to contact them to update the resume they had on file. I submitted all of my other stuff (not including the SOP) to SOPHAS in December, and at the very end of December, a paper I was an author on got accepted. Being that you can't update the resume on SOPHAS past the first submission, despite how late you apply to other schools, I updated my resume and emailed them saying, hey, I've updated it, can you please add this to my file? It took them no time at all to get back to me to let me know that a decision was already made. They said it would get to me within the mail in a month (and it took me a week to get it).

So in short, if you're concerned about being obnoxious, find something to add to your application and inquire about it that way! Or, you could just be straightforward (but where's the fun in that?). 🙂

Columbia-MPH health policy & management...IN!!!!! first school to hear from...hoping this trend continues...SO excited...

You heard from Columbia today? Or did they send you the email yesterday?

Accepted today to Harvard MPH, via email. So happy!

Congratulations!!! Which concentration did you apply to? When was your SOPHAS application sent to Harvard?

ACCEPTED at the University of Minnesota (MPH in Public Health Administration and Policy)!

Application was received 12/23/10 (though the university sent an automated email 1/6/11 stating my application is under review).

Woohoo!

Good luck to everyone else!

Got into BU Health Policy and Management with a merit award!!! The letter came this morning. I live in MA so it didn't have far to travel.

Accepted:
BU
Emory
U of Minnesota
GW
Tulane

Waitlisted:
U of Michigan

Rejected:
Yale

They are all policy and management programs. Right now I am deciding between Emory and UMn (any input on these two would be helpful), but I would be psyched to get into Michigan.

Wow, thank you - it actually was pretty informative. I'm coming from an anthropology background, too! I haven't applied yet, I'm planning to in the fall, still deciding whether my interests fall more in line with epidemiology or community health/health behavior (leaning towards this). 🙂

I was just curious because it seems like many of the posters here are more inclined towards pursuing epidemiology and I haven't seen too many people discussing programs like CHS - or even UCLA acceptances period, though I suspect that will change soon.

It seems like there are a lot of anthropology majors applying to MPH programs! I focused on cultural anthropology in college.

I know that at Columbia, the health promotion concentration is one of their largest programs, so there must be a lot of people interested in it. If you have a chance, I would visit some of the schools you're interested in and speak with a current student in the community health/health behavior department to learn more about it. I did that at Columbia, and that's what convinced me to apply to the health promotion concentration rather than the global health concentration.

It seems like with UCLA, they have been slowly giving out acceptances/rejections; some people heard back in mid-January and a lot of other people are still waiting - that's probably why people haven't been talking about it as much on this forum.

Hey coffeefor me- I'm curious what you learned that made you decide on health promotion vs. global health? I was just accepted into Columbia's global health program, but am also interested in health behavior/health promotion...

Thanks Gabu. I applied to the Global Health concentration. I applied very early, SOPHAS sent my completed application on 11/3/2010. Applied only to Harvard MPH. Good luck to you!

I've been reading this forum for awhile so I figured I'd post my info too...

Undergrad GPA: 3.9 (History and Public Health, Honors College)
GRE: 690 Q, 620 V
SOPHAS submitted: 11/11
SOPHAS mailed: 11/23
Research: I wrote an Honors Thesis with the History Department on HIV/AIDS in NYC in the early - to - mid 1980's. I specifically investigated preventative harm-reduction practices implemented at the bathhouses, but also the politics and activism behind those policies and how the bathhouses were shut down. A significant portion of the thesis also discussed the beginnings of HIV/AIDS in NYC and America.
Experience: I worked at AID for AIDS, International in NYC as a Social Outreach and Youth Intern for one year. I've also worked at several doctors offices and volunteered at a local shelter for homeless people living with HIV/AIDS.

I've applied to these programs for their community health programs, but want to focus on community health and HIV/AIDS:

Applied: Columbia, NYU, BU, Berkeley, GW, Texas, Michigan and UIC
Accepted: Michigan, GW and Texas
Rejected: None

I also received a BA in cultural anthropology. I've been accepted to Brown's MPH and Columbia's MPH (Sociomedical Sciences: Social Science Research in Public Health). It's nice to know fellow anthro's are applying to pub health programs too! I'm torn between the two schools.

Congrats Ulysses72. That's excellent.

Congratulations to everyone else too. Very exciting times

Hey coffeefor me- I'm curious what you learned that made you decide on health promotion vs. global health? I was just accepted into Columbia's global health program, but am also interested in health behavior/health promotion...

Well, I've always been interested in health promotion in a global setting, so I had a hard time deciding whether to apply for health promotion/health behavior programs or global health programs.

At Columbia, I learned that the health promotion concentration teaches skills that can be applied to work in international public health. There are also opportunities for people in the health promotion concentration (and all other concentrations, I think) to intern abroad over the summer. The student I spoke with told me about how her mentor in the health promotion concentration (I guess everyone at Columbia is assigned to a second year student mentor in their program) interned over the summer in South Africa at an NGO focused on preventing HIV/AIDS.

I think the pros of the global health concentration are that students get to go abroad for an entire semester and that those students are probably more competitive for international jobs after graduation. In the end, I chose health promotion because I liked the idea that I could specialize in the area of public health that I'm the most interested in - health promotion/behavioral sciences - while also being able to work/intern abroad.

Agreed! Seeing other anthro majors applying to public health programs makes me realize that I made the right choice for a graduate degree!

I'm a little confused about the Columbia applications. I didn't choose the global track for Epidemiology because I thought that people needed prior health experience to be considered. However, after seeing so many people post about applying to the global track, did I get it wrong?

And if I did, does anyone know if it's too late to try to get into that track?

Thanks!

Also, I just read that Columbia is slightly changing its program starting in 2012, including adding a "specialization certificate." I'm not sure what you can specialize in, but I am hoping that I will be able to concentrate in health promotion AND get a certificate in global health. http://www.mailman.columbia.edu/academics/mph-2012-welcome/columbia-mph-2012/new-mph-program-options

And, if you stick with global health and realize that you'd rather be in health promotion, from what the current Mailman student told me, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to switch concentrations.

Likewise. I got into the same programme.

Just joined this forum. Very interesting and comforting to see all the discussions. I'm an international applicant and still trying to learn more about the schools. What is Columbia best known for?

Long time reader, first time poster.

Stats:
GRE: 610 V; 750 Q; 4.5 AW
GPA: 3.5 undergrad in Political Science; 3.8 post-grad in public health classes
10 years work experience in nonprofits, volunteer experience doing HIV outreach and needle exchange
I am bilingual in French and have traveled extensively.

Accepted: UPitt (BCHS), UMinn (CHE)
Rejected: none yet...
Waiting: UCLA, UCB, Tulane, UMich, UIC

Here's my question for y'all:
Apparently I missed the fact that UCLA requires you to send a copy of your transcripts with your application. I applied on Dec 1st and had only received the confirmation of receipt from them on Jan 4th. Then today, they contacted me saying: "We are ready to submit the decision made by Community Health Sciences to Graduate Admissions Office for final review. However in order to do that we need your official transcripts from Indiana University."

Would they bother asking if I was going to be rejected? Is this a sign that I am likely to get admitted???

I live in Northern California and I am definitely favoring the "warm" schools (UCB, UCLA and Tulane), although I don't rule out the others. :xf:

I would put money on it. Apparently the Graduate Division won't accept SOPHAS transcripts.

As a resident of Minnesota, let me just say that the city of Minneapolis is incredible and full of life, not to mention the fact that the area is incredibly diverse if you have any interest in education of diverse populations. The winters DO have a few weeks that are really cold, but it's really not that bad, and much of BOTH of the twin cities are connected in the downtown areas through skyways. As a bonus, the falls and springs here are incredibly nice!

That said, congratulations on your acceptances and good luck with your decision!

Thanks to everyone who replied about Tulane. I actually didn't look at the info pages about the schools on the SOPHAS page other than to skip to the link for the specific school. I guess I should have done that 🙂

GRE: 760 Q, 620 V, 4.5 AW

My question, did anyone else apply to OHSU? It is not a CEPH certified school, but has a CEPH certified program. But I haven't read much about it other than their website. I applied because it sounded like a good program on their website and I have an interest in living in Portland, but does anyone have more detailed information on the program?

Thanks in advance!

A friend of mine is currently in her first year for this program. She seems to be enjoying it and portland is a great city. I am not sure what the pros and cons are for an accredited public health program vs accredited public health school. There probably isn't too much difference but it's something i would consider.

got accepted to emory mph epi!!

yay!! first acceptance

it was posted within the past 6 hours bc i checked last night. 😛.

Did you by any chance apply to the University of Wisconsin Madison MPH program?

No I actually didn't. It's going to sound silly, but it's a rivalry thing for me, and I had decided not to go there for my undergraduate degree as well.

However, the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee is starting a school of Public Health for next fall that will unfortunately not be accredited until 2014, but yay for more schools in Wisconsin besides Madison and LaCrosse!

No problem, I got the e-mail on December 20, so 8 weeks ago.

And thanks! I wasn't super bummed about Yale, but it was still nice to get an acceptance a few hours later. Now I've heard from half of my schools! I'm starting to realize that this is the easy part; the hard part is going to be making a decision...

CONGRATSSS on your acceptances 🙂 Those are great schools!!!

I was just wondering out of curiosity, how come even despite the Merit Award from BU, your school consideration is between Emory and UMn. what parts of those programs appeal to you more 🙂

Thank you and congratsss again!!!

in at Yale for EMD 🙂 found the letter on my desk after a longgg day at the office. Happy Valentine's day to me! Still waiting on Columbia though

I visited BU last fall and I wasn't thrilled with it. Kind of a vibe thing? I really want to like it because I am from MA and would love to be close to home again, so I guess I haven't completely ruled it out... I'll probably go to their accepted students day. That probably isn't very helpful... I'm still very undecided I guess. If there was a school with the UMn curriculum that was in Boston and had the Rollins reputation I would go there? Or if I got off the waitlist at Michigan.

Hi,
Oppositeofwar...congrats on UIC. How long did it take them to turn around your application from SOPHAS to acceptance? I don't see too many people here interested in UIC so I would appreciate knowing about your experience with them. I did receive a confirmation email that my application was received but that is it.
Thanks!

JOHNS HOPKINS. IN. 😍

Congrats!!!! If you don't mind my asking, what was the turnaround time?
Did you find out by checking the website?
Judging from your username, I'm going to guess this was for international health? Mph or msph or doctoral? Sorry for
the barrage of questions and congrats again!

you guessed it. international health here. I applied for the MSPH. 🙂

I applied very early since JHU was among my top choices. It did take 3 months to hear back, but JHU's "final deadline" just passed so I wasn't really expecting to hear a decision till now.

after you log into your application a decision link will appear on the bottom of the screen. once you click it, it should display a pop-up that says "congratulations!" followed by "you have been accepted to ________ department for _______" or something like that.

SOPHAS mailed my application on 12/8, I received an application received e-mail on 12/20, and then on 1/21 I was asked if I would like to be considered for the MPH as well as the MS (what I had applied for). I hope that helps! Good luck!
