Has anyone else from May 8th or 11th heard back from them?

I heard back from the May 8th interview this week. I believe that they are making their decisions this week.

If you are concerned, I would email Carla. The worst she can say is they are still deciding.

Hello, I am a KSUCPM student who has been selected to serve as a resource for any questions related to KSUCPM. Feel free to inquire about the application process, student life, workload, facilities, professors, or anything else. I will do my best to answer all questions in a honest, thorough, and timely manner.

Good Afternoon,

What were the residency placement numbers for the current year? For those that didn't place, what resources does the school have for helping those students to get placed again?

Sorry for the delay,

I believe 8 people of the graduating class of about 90 did not match. As a caveat I am not well versed in the resources available, partly because I am not sure there is a set "process" that occurs with non-matched students. Im sure you can imagine that each non-matched student has his/her own set of circumstances which are causative in limiting their continuation (Failing Boards, low GPA, professionalism, attitude) or it could be something that has nothing to do with academics (applying to programs "out of their league", personal issues). But what I can assure you is that if you are part of KSUCPM, you do your best and conduct yourself in a manner that is respectable, that you will be taken care of. KSUCPM as the largest Podiatry school has also the largest alumni network. The alumni are also faithful and are always visiting/offering their expertise/time to any students that need it. I have heard of stories in which students who did not match were set up with an internship/job within the podiatry profession (often in connection with the alumni network) and when they applied next cycle, they did not have any trouble matching. Again, something like this is always situationally specific, but personally I feel confident that if for some reason I did not match, that I am well equipped with all the connections and networking that KSUCPM cultivates to put myself in a position where I would get accepted the following year. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the information! I did recently paid my deposit so I'll be attending KSUCPM in the Fall.

Why KSUCPM??

· Collective Focus - Everyone staffed at the KSUCPM campus is working towards providing the greatest opportunities for the enrolled student doctors. This allows everyone to concentrate specifically on the profession. As a student, if at any point you need help it feels good knowing that anyone you turn to is not only an expert at their given job, but an expert who is podiatry oriented ONLY and someone who wants to see you succeed. For instance, the librarians staffed aren’t just the average university librarians, they are librarians who are specialists in the field of podiatry and personally I have been amazed on multiple occasions with the knowledge they have of the profession. And again this condition can be applied to all the staff (enrollment staff, residency placement staff, academic help staff, research staff, etc.). Honestly, this is why I believe there is such a strong sense of community and family at the school. The reputation and success of the school is shared amongst everyone, not just its students.

As a student applying this upcoming cycle, I think the biggest question most people have with Kent is A) Why did Kent have over twice as many unmatched graduates as any other podiatry school in the most recent match, and B) What is Kent doing to make sure this doesn't happen in the future?

I appreciate that you say there is a sense of community and family at the school. Frankly though, this is FAR down the list of things that come to mind when Kent has been mentioned on this board recently.

I just finished the internship at Kent and honestly I thought the school was really great. I think the unmatched part is just a direct result of them having the largest class of students. I think for their situation, the more people, the lower quality people accepted. If that makes sense at all... Some people they accept may have no right to be in a medical school. Bad work ethic, don't study enough, don't care, etc. They just want to fill all their spots so they get more $$ so they accept lower quality people. That's just my opinion. The 4th year students we shadowed in the clinics really knew their stuff. The school, students, and staff were all really exceptional.

Study hard, don't get terrible grades, be normal and nice, and I do not see anybody having trouble matching.

Yea I think that's a big part of it. In the end it's gonna come down to the individual student, and Kent was/still is taking too many people who have no business being in a doctoral program.

I'll be interested to see the class profiles for the most recent class...wouldn't be surprised to see the average GPA/MCAT tick up a bit

Thanks for bringing this up CardsFan92… Here is my perspective

First off I would like to say that I do understand your concern and if I were just now looking to apply, I would have took this number into consideration. But honestly, knowing what I know now I would advise you to not let this statistic taint your opinion of the school. There are opportunities and resources at KSCUPM that are simply not available elsewhere (which is why I chose KSUCPM) and I hope you get the opportunity to come witness that for yourself.

Now to answer your first question, I believe there are several reasons as to why KSCUCPM had the largest number unmatched. The most obvious reason is that we are the largest school (bigger number applicants = increased chance of unmatched students). As a side note, I would just like to say that there are a wide variety of explanations as to why an applicant goes unmatched and they are not always of the “academic” nature. With that being, I do not personally know the unmatched applicants or why any of them did not match. But what I can say is that KSUCPM provides many (if not the most) opportunities to land a residency of your choice: 6 months for clerkships, a residency program at University Hospital that only accepts KSUCPM graduates (10 spots), many connections to the residency programs throughout Ohio (I believe there are around 13 programs) and programs throughout the nation (ex. we have guest lectures who come in from different programs who offer contact info for students to shadow), I could go on and on. And I would encourage you to not take my word for it, but look up highly competitive programs throughout the nation or ones that you could potentially be interested in and see which types of students they accepted. Personally I received interviews at every podiatric school I applied; yet KSUCPM stuck out and the school has continually reinforced my expectations. Yet for whatever reason, opportunities provided to student doctors are not always exhausted when it comes to trying to connect with a residency, some students just don’t use them. Additionally, KSUCPM does not withhold a given student’s ability to take boards based on low GPA. As a result, the school may have a lower board passage rate compared to other schools that require a GPA score of a certain caliber in order to take board exams and this could potentially lead to more students down the line not landing a residency. I would not anticipate a pattern forming with the amount of students that we did not match this year. And again I do not know specifically as to why the 8 individuals did not match this cycle (academic problems, personal situation, poor choices in programs applied, etc.).

To answer your second question, I am not sure what/if the school is anything specifically in order to cut down on unmatched residents. I do know the school is constantly making improvements but I have not heard of any specifically aimed to cut down on unmatched residents. Again, I am not sure the school is completely to blame for the unmatched residents. I think one change that may be introduced in the future is maybe weeding out the unmotivated poorly performing students before boards and residency so situations like this do not happen.

-I hope this is helpful. I am doing my best to be as honest/transparent as possible and I hope you find the school that best fits you. If I could give you any advice I would say to take a close look at opportunities/resources at each school and decide which ones that fit you the best. Goodluck!

Awesome! You made the right choice

GOLDEN STATE WON THE FINALS!! Everyone come to CSPM!!! The championship parade was a block away from the school.

Just kidding. All in good fun. You have been doing a great job answering all the Kent Pod questions.

Did you get any scholarships this late in the cycle?
A little late to reply, but no, I did not receive any scholarships. I thought I would get atleast a 2k but I did get accepted pretty late in the game.

Is KSUCPM friendly to nontraditional students? I'm in my 40s.

futureboy,

Yes, we have several non-traditional (older) students at our program. In my opinion they fit right in with everyone else in the class.

@KSUCPMstudent When will we start hearing from Kent for this cycle?

Just talked with an admissions officer today to double check, and they're still waiting for AACPMAS to send out applications. It is expected that they will arrive either this week or next week, once the information is recieved it will only take a few days until you are contacted.

That's lame, since some of the other schools already have our applications and are sending out interview invites. I wonder why different schools would get the applications at different times...

Yeah, I thought this year it changed and all the schools got access to the application immediately after it was verified?

I got 2 different stories. When I called AACPMAS, they told me after it is verified, all schools have access. But when I called Kent, they said they have not received them from AACPMAS yet. Maybe they are just busy and have a specific date to start working on them

What is a typical schedule for first and second years?
Is attendance to lectures mandatory?

I am taking the Jan MCAT. Will Kent still interview without an MCAT score?

Thanks for all the insightful info!

BTR1208,

#1 A typical class schedule is in general:

M,W,F: Class 8-10, Lab 10-12 (no lab on friday), Lunch/Break 12-1, Class 1-3
T,TH: Class 10-12, Lunch/Break 12-1, Class 1-3

#2 Going to lecture is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. All lectures are recorded and uploaded for student access. Recordings include both video of the professor and of smartboard/powerpoint notes (very helpful for studying and reviewing for boards).

#3 You can get an interview without a MCAT score. However, it is more difficult (need the other aspects of your application to be strong). With that being said, it would not hurt applying without and then if you do not get an interview waiting until your MCAT score is released.

What is the minimum?
We did this before on another thread. Comparing percentiles for old versus new MCAT scores and keeping in mind matriculating MCAT scores for the past couple of cycles, the average Podiatry MCAT score would be around a 494, with the absolute minimum around a 484 which is equivalent to about a 15 on the old MCAT. But you're not getting in with a 484 unless the rest of your application is stellar. Also, it seems like there are very high numbers of applicants this year which is increasing the competition and gonna push the stats up a couple of points. So, while for the last couple of cycles the bare minimum might have been equivalent to around a 484 with an average 494, KSUCPMstudent may be right in that the average for this year may shift towards a 496 and so perhaps the absolute minimum will shift towards a 486.

Increased competition? Why?

Increased competition? Why?
More and more people see podiatry as a viable career option and therefore more people are applying? There are a lot of possible reasons as to why the admissions process is getting more competitive.

@KSUCPMstudent I have an interview at KSUCPM on the 7th of October. Do you have any tips for interview day? Kent is my number one choice for several reasons, and I dont want to mess this up.

Also, my overall gpa is a 3.12 with a huge upward trend, a 3.63 science gpa, and a mcat of 20 (6ps, 6vr, 8bs). Just wondering where I may stand at getting in.

@ultrarunner1988, Great to hear KSUCPM is your #1! You have good taste.

Tips for Interview day:
-Relax and be yourself, but also be confident. No one has a perfect application, so don't be afraid to be honest about your mistakes and how you've grown from them.
-Even though it sounds like you already really like KSUCPM, use the interview day as an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the program.

Where you stand with getting in: (average being the mean of accepted students)
**Just to reiterate I am not affiliated with admissions at all and this is just my opinion as a student (other than the facts listed below based on statistics).
-MCAT: slightly below average
-Overall GPA: slightly below average
-Science GPA: slightly above average

-You probably already knew what I just stated above in regards to your stats. After looking at them I feel confident that you are "capable" to handle the work load of Podiatry school (and so do admissions to some extent, which is why you received and interview). I really don't have much of an idea of what chances you have, but I can give you some advice (some of which you may find as common sense): Just keep in mind a lot of people are applying for a spot at KSUCPM, so I guess I would ask yourself how would you personally find the students (all with similar academic/on paper capabilities) which are best inclined to become podiatric physicians? . . . . . Idk about you but I'd be concerned with:

#1 Can an individual act in an professional manner?
#2 Can an individual communicate effectively? (Can he/she hold a conversation and express his/her opinion/feelings)
#3 Does this person have a passion for the field of medicine and more specifically podiatry?
#4 Does this person's volunteer/work experience reflect his alleged affinity for the field of medicine?
#5 Does an individual have the work ethic and determination for the academic rigor of the program?

-Again this is just my list of things I would keep in mind when going into an interview. I'm sure the one you could generate is just as good/better than mine. Interview day really is just a day for the admissions staff to get to know you better. Don't overthink it, keep it simple and you will do fine!

I hope this is helpful. Good luck! Hope to see you on campus someday.

It usually takes a couple of weeks. If in two weeks you haven't heard anything, you could either call or e-mail the admissions office. Or you could let me know and I could see if/why there was a delay.

I'm looking for a 4 year schedule of KSUCPM's classes. You know they ones they give you at your interviews that give you a layout of the 4 years. Can anybody link me to one? I can't find it anywhere.

Is Kent the only schools that does summer classes? Anybody know why some do and some don't?

Im a current 1st year & I dont even have my summer semester class schedule. If you search for calenders on the Kent.edu site, you will have dates for start/end dates, Finals start/end dates, but zero class details.
