Any one else applying to Texas A&M c/o 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm pretty sure whoever is in charge of the mentor-mentee program is supposed to do that. However, I don't know if the current 2nd years have given us any information on that (if they are even supposed to).

i just talked to Yolanda...talk about putting the fear back into the wait....she said typically they go through 10 people...but also theres a chance everyone on the list is asked or somtimes none...so basically it just varies STILL...so if i had a little confidence in being alternate 4 that just went down the drain.....

they will notify people over the phone for those of you still wondering

and there typically has been 2 waiting lists...but this year its just one..and its an instate waiting list....which is a little daunting as well....🙁

"sometimes none"?!?!?! 😱 I'm 1st on the waitlist and that makes me nervous :scared:

So, if an OOS accepted applicant declines does that mean they will fill the spot with an alternate since we're all IS, or will they just not fill the spot? I emailed Yolanda a whole list of questions but I haven't heard back yet.

I tried to set up a facebook group but sadly I don't know anyone else going to A&M and it wouldn't let a loser like me create a one-person group!

It's ok, I don't know anyone yet either! If you PM me your name, I can add you as a friend on facebook, and then I can make the facebook group. 🙂

I asked in my email what happens if an OOS applicant declines so I'll let you know what she says if I ever hear back from her. I think I'm going to call if I don't hear back soon.

Just wanted to let c/o 2015ers know that I made a facebook group for us, and it's called "Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2015". So far, me and peachykeenies are the only members, but if you search for it on FB I can add ya! So excited to meet everyone!!😀

I'm excited to join, but when I search for the group on facebook, nothing comes up! I searched for several different names in addition to the "Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2015." Any suggestions? 😕

Yeah, we couldn't figure out how to make the group searchable 😳. If you'll PM me your name and school, I can add you as a friend and then add you to the group!

Sorry about that! I made that post before I realized there was a search problem. We just couldn't figure out how to make it work. 😡

But yeah, like peachykeenies said, if you PM one of us your name/school, we can add ya. It looks like the only way to do it right now...

Hey guys, could yall also include your email address in the PMs for the facebook group? I want to make sure I have the right person if more than one person comes up on a search, or in some cases no one comes up! Thanks! 🙂

If you bring up the window for the group, there should be an "Edit Group" button in the top right corner. Click it. Then, select "Open" for privacy and then click "Save Changes". There are some non SDNers that are asking about the group so it might be easier to just do that instead of trying to invite everyone personally.

Unfortunately, I did set it to "open" and it still doesn't work. 😡

Here is the URL, if that helps people find it:

I haven't heard anything yet, but I'm not really expecting to until after the April 15th deadline. I will post here the second i hear anything though. Good luck!:xf:

Housing question! During clinics, is there a rule about how quickly you need to be able to get to the vet school from home? My boyfriend and I are considering buying a place instead of renting, which means committing to a location for all 4 years. 😱 A couple places that look promising are close to Blinn, so about 5.5 or 6 miles from the vet school. Is this a bad idea?

(Still crossing my fingers for you waitlisters! :luck:)

I think there is a rule like that, but I'm not sure about the details.

You might also try posting on the FB group wall, because there are also a lot of current students on there that might have some advice for ya (in addition to the people on SDN, of course🙂 )

I know of a few people who commute 45 min or longer. I don't know about a rule, but worst case scenario you could crash on someone's couch for a few days if you had to be close by.

Or crash in the vet school. I'm pretty sure one could live there...😀

When I was on-call during undergrad the rule was you had to be able to get there within 15 minutes. I would think it'd be about the same as a vet student? Within 10 would almost definitely be good enough.

So 15 minutes during the day would put you at about Southwest Parkway in College Station andddd....maybe a bit further out than Villa Maria in Bryan. Never lived east or west of town so I can't gauge a distance from there. But when I lived near the vet school it took me about 15 minutes to get out to Lake Bryan, which is a ways out there, and takes me about 20 to get from the vet school to Lick Creek Park (which is south-east of what I consider the 'main' part of town).

The rule was 15 minutes at another vet school (can't remember which one I read that about), so I guessed it was probably about the same for A&M.

Can I ask a favor of all those who did interviews this last time around? This weekend is our Open House and I'm sure at some point or another I'll be asked about the new MMI format. I really don't know much about it. I know it's based on ethical questions vs the 'getting to know you' type questions, but beyond that, nada.

Can y'all give me a short run down (or long if you want to) on the questions/scenarios y'all were presented with, your thoughts, and maybe a bit on the format itself. I know y'all had two lines to run through and were given 6 minutes or so per room. Is that it or were there other things too? Anything they did beyond the interview itself?

Before the interview there was a brief orientation that went over the MMI format. There were 6 rooms, each with 2 interviewers. On the outside of the door to the room there was a brief scenario. We had 2 minutes to read the scenario, then 6 minutes to talk to the interviewers, explain what we would do in the situation, and answer follow-up questions. We would then have 2 minutes to move to the next room.

We signed a form saying that we wouldn't give specifics about the questions. However, they were pretty basic situations that address some gray areas like convenience euthanasia and animal rights. There were also a few that were designed (I think) to see how informed we were about the field in general, such as the challenges the profession is facing in the future or how we would handle stressful situations. The whole thing took about an hour. I liked the format, because even if I messed up in one room, there were still 10 more interviewers I could potentially impress. However, the time constraints were an issue for me, because I could've talked at length about a few of the topics.

I agree that I liked the format. It was pretty stressful leading up to it, but the actual interview wasn't that bad. I think the interviewers aren't supposed to give much feedback on your answers, but most of them still nodded and smiled enough for you to know that you didn't sound like a complete idiot. I felt like I could have talked more at some stations, but I never spent the full time in a monologue. I tend to talk too quickly which didn't help. Many of the follow-up questions the interviewers had gave me more opportunities to relate the scenarios to my personal experiences.

I know I bombed one station. I don't know if I read the scenario wrong or if my brain just wasn't working, but I had almost nothing to say. It was awkward and stressful... and then it was over and I could move on!

They also provided paper for us to jot down notes, which I only found useful at a couple stations (namely ones that had multiple questions or more complex scenarios). Generally I didn't have enough time to do much more than read, skim again, and spend what felt like 5 seconds thinking before it was time to go in the room.

So overall y'all liked it? Do you think you would've preferred a more traditional interview of stuff like "Why do you want to be a vet?"

By the by for those interested in applying next year: the adcomms really seemed to like the MMI format so they'll likely be doing it again next year. They might decide to spread it out over more weekends though.

I did like it. Although I'm not sure there is really much prep work for it. Really just staying up to date on current topics. My husband also asked me a lot of practice questions and although none of those questions came up it did allow me to practice answering questions quickly while making the point I wanted to make.

Hi guys!

I've just been trolling around here for awhile, but finally decided to join up.

Anyway, congrats to all those who got in! I was wondering why no one of the A&M matriculates didn't post in the acceptance stats thread. I would LOVEE to see what some real numbers are to get in. :xf:

Congrats Babz!!!! Welcome to the class of 2015!!!! :highfive:

....and su_grad, I assume you are in too, since you were #1. Congrats to you too!!!

i called in today to ask a fafsa question and they said they were on number 7! is that normal movement before the april 15 deadline? when does april movement slow down? good luck waitlisters!!!

I'm in too!!!!! Yay! It's finally official 🙂

Hey guys! I was just curious if any current students could tell me what brands of pet food are available through the schools food program. We are thinking of switching our dogs food but i wanted to switch to something that the vet school carries so that we don't just switch them again when school starts. Is just Science Diet or do they have Purina and Iams as well?

I'm not a current vet student, but I do spend a lot of time at the Vet School and I can tell you they have both Science Diet (prescription and regular) and Purina. It's all ridiculously cheap, too!

$8 for a 40 pound bag or so, with a 120# limit per month, plus a free 40# bag from Purina every month.

I have a random question and any thoughts would be appreciated. does anyone ever decline their offer to vet school by just not sending any response to the school? is this common? or do most people respond to the school letting them know their decision? I was wondering if someone decided not to accept their offer and didn't notify the school, how long the school would wait to inform a waitlister of a spot opening. do you think they would contact the person to confirm that they are not attending or just if they haven't heard by X many days assume they declined?

April 15th I believe was the deadline for when you had to notify schools you were coming. So by this point in time they should know.

There may be some withdrawals over the summer as people have situations come up, but probably not too very many.

Hey yall! Just wondering if anybody knew of some good places to get some cool A&M vet school apparel? Because everybody knows that it's not official until you've got a t-shirt... haha

Well my avatar is part of a shirt that the school sold on their website. I wish it didn't have the text (College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences) else I'd buy it. I've never really been a fan of the 'official' shirts through the CVM itself though. Here's the link.

But really, I wouldn't worry about it. When you get here there'll be PLENTY of opportunities for vet school shirts. I own at least 5 I think. It was bad enough that half my casual wardrobe was maroon before. Now it's just getting worse better. 😀

Did anyone else sign up for summer anatomy? I thought they were supposed to call or email us on Friday, but I never heard anything.

I believe they are going out on Monday via email!

Anybody have any updates on the waitlist? Last I heard it was up to 11.

Congratulations Fancy Vet!!! That's so exciting!! 😀

Hey class of 2015! So I'm hoping to transfer into your class, but the office of professional programs is telling me there are no vacancies in the class. I know that the office has lied to students in the past so I was just wondering if this was true. One of my friends told me that at least one person has left yalls class but I just wanted to double check. If anyone has any info, please let me know!
