I know that the AADSAS application is available online a little earlier this year than last year, so now is the time when applicants seriously begin narrowing down their application choices.
To this extent, I thought I'd post our first semester schedule at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. Perhaps it will encourage some people to apply, and perhaps it will scare others away.
The bottom line is that I wish I had known a little more about the schools I applied to BEFORE I applied--I would have eliminated 3 or 4 schools and replaced them with others. Because we haven't actually begun classes yet, I'll do my best to keep applicants updated on the information I have.
The structure
Students do not participate in courses which run the entire length of the semester, but rather study modules, which typically last one week (with the exception of two modules). Class/lecture time is 35-40 hours a week, which means that each module has 35-40 hours of lecture time devoted to it. Grand Rounds (patient presentations, guest lecturers, student presentations) are held on Fridays, and exams will be held on Mondays. For example, a module will run from Monday-Friday, and then the exam will be on the following Monday (giving students the weekend to study) for that Module.
The module curriculum:
1. History of Dentistry
2. Introduction to Public Health/Epidemiology
3. Introduction to Health Disciplines
4. Genetics
5. Microbiology
6. Musculoskeletal (2 weeks)
7. Skin, Breast
8. Neuroscience (2 weeks)
9. Mind and Cognition
10. Endocronology
11. Hematology
12. Cardiopulmonary
13. Immunology
14. Metabolism
15. Digestive System
16. Urinary/Male repro
17. Reproduction/OBGYN
Each of these modules will last one week, with the two noted exceptions. A handful of small modules occupy different days throughout the first semester. They are: Dental Radiology, Dental Materials, Dental Pain Control, and Pharmacology.
This first-semester schedule represents 19 weeks of class time, and three weeks of break time (prior to the winter holiday break).
As you can see, this type of learning may be very condusive to some, and not condusive to others. Notice, for example, that the typically difficult freshman courses of "biochem" and "anatomy" are not listed--these subjects will be studied as they specifically relate to the modules at hand. Hopefully this information will help some when making their application decisions.
PM me if you have any questions.
