Auburn c/o 2017 Applicants!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm starting to look up housing. Anyone know anything about that? What about finding someone to live with?

While it won't help with the roommate part, one good way to start a search is to use Zillow and start the results close to the school, working outwards. It includes homes for rent, sale, apts, and condos.

A lot of students are either in trailers or rent an apartment or condo. At Open House, they will have an book for you guys that lists a lot of the local information as well as listings of current vet student selling their trailers. Personally, I bought a trailer because I have 2 large dogs and they enjoy the extra space and the yard. There's a lot of affordable places in the area that are pretty nice depending on what you're looking for. I would also suggest e-mailing Ms. Kaye if you're planning on looking for a place before then and she help you with current listings and people that have places for rent nearby.

Just letting ya'll know, I withdrew my application today off of the wait list. I'm going to UGA, my IS. Good luck to all of you!!

Just fyi all of you going for your interview, I filled out the interview feedback! I also have a complete list of all the questions they asked me. It wasn't bad at all. I had my OOS interview at the beginning of February and was accepted 10 days later. Let me know if you have any questions! and good luck! 🙂

That is awesome! Congrats to you! 😀 I would love to see what they asked you if you wouldn't mind to PM me. TIA 🙂

So did anybody get more info in the email from Kaye about interviews for KY residents. I guess I just expected a bit more....

I wrote to Kaye last night to officially accept my spot in the class of 2017 (OOS). My acceptance packet is on the way to me in the mail!

I'm driving over to Auburn for the day on Thursday to start looking at potential housing. I guess I will probably end up living by myself first year and then try to find a roommate or roommates for 2nd year on. I just don't know that I would be comfortable moving myself and my 2 cats in with a complete stranger! Hopefully I can find somewhere to live where I will have vet students as neighbors so it won't be lonely.

👍👍

That's great! I will be headed down there on the 14th for my interview the next day. My friend tell me that most vet students live in one of the trailer parks but there are apartments and such. Besides you will probably be sooooo busy you won't have time to be lonely.....just grateful for silence and the company of cats.🙂

I just emailed Kaye to decline my OOS spot as I will be attending my IS school....I hope one of you gets it!!

I got the same email with just a list of hotels and a map... but yesterday she resent it with another attachment with the actual info on where the interview is... what to bring... etc.

🙂

Yeah, I got that too.....still didn't have too much information. Good luck to you!:luck:

Good luck to everyone for interviews this week!!

Done! I feel pretty good about the interview. My nerves took over much more than I thought they would but I was pretty well prepared so covered well.

I think my interview went well. They complimented me on my communication skills by the end of my interview, hopefully a positive sign. Kaye said she plans on letting us know on Tuesday. *fingers crossed* So excited! Beautiful school, friendly people, gorgeous area (and fairly stable weather). ^_^

I'm in!!! I JUST got the email like 5 minutes ago. I'm SOOOO excited! I'm going to Auburn!!

😍😍😍

I'll see you folks at the Open House, and if not, in August 🙂

Is there a facebook group or anything for the class?

I'm in too!!! Now to make the decision of where to get a DVM!!!! It is so nice to have finally reached this point after years of hoping, planning, and working. Congrats everyone!!!😀

Congrats to everyone accepted from KY!

...still on the waitlist for OOS, fingers crossed...

Any more OOS accepted people planning on declining/waiting to hear from another school?

I just declined my OOS seat. I hope someone gets it! Good Luck everyone!

I'm thinking I will probably end up at Auburn (which would be a good thing..don't get me wrong), but I am waiting to hear from Tennessee (interview tomorrow) and I'm going to hold off as long as I can for my IS, NCS (I'm on the waitlist). I will be praying a lot in the next few months for guidance..this process is so difficult to figure out and get through!

If you get into auburn and tenn- do you have one you prefer? I know the whole process is just stressful

Pbpauburn are you waitlisted? Keep in mind that they over accept, in order to fill seats... Having said that, I really hope you get in! I still need to pick between schools, but as of now it looks like I might be declining my Auburn acceptance. Will keep you updated!

Yes I am! I was trying to get an idea if most people have decided yet since *most* schools have finished interviews etc. I would love to know if you do decline..

They told us during my interview welcome, that last year they accepted about 75 people for 40 OOS spots. They had to go through the waitlist to around postion 120 last year in order to fill the OOS seats. Try not to keep count of people, it will drive you crazy! Plus, a lot of people don't use SDN. So you never really know! Best of luck to you!

I am on the auburn waitlist as well. Did you call or email to find out where you are on the waitlist? I would love to know but I also don't want to bother them too much.

I am also on the waitlist and was trying to think of how to politely inquire about my position on the waitlist. How did you go about doing this?

With as much as it sucks waiting to hear back from a school, I would not call to find out (at least in the case of Auburn). Kaye is does not know your spot on the list (that and it's not our policy to release that sort of information). If too many people end up calling her, she'll just get irritated. April 15th is just around the corner. Just hold out for a few more days. 👍👍

I just heard back from Kaye, and she told me they do not disclose positions on the waitlist. Who told you that you were on the lower end of the waitlist?

I only asked bc I have a pre req to take for auburn and have a deadline to sign up for the course. It was either a take the class or don't go to auburn situation

I'm really struggling with this scenario...I'm trying to compare in my mind but it is very difficult..here is what I am thinking so far...
I've always wanted to go to UT since I was a kid (I have family in Knoxville and love TN)
Tennessee sees a lot of exotic cats which are a huge passion of mine and I'm wondering if I will get that exposure at Auburn..can anyone help me out with that??
BUT..Tennessee is not as highly ranked as Auburn and is MUCH more expensive (tuition and living)
Auburn has a BRAND new hospital in the works and is less expensive, even though still out of state tuition.
I wasn't a fan of the dress code at Auburn but loved the hospital and facilities.
Can anyone else help me out with the comparison??

i know that for me I always thought that I would go to Tufts or VM but when I got in to both and Auburn (which I hadn't expected to even get into) it was my visit that sold me. I think that Auburn is a great college town and the all new classrooms and facilities are just awesome! I don't know much about UT but I know when it came down to Tufts (near family, love boston, incredible program) vs Auburn I just had to go with where I thought the learning style suited me best. Just imagine yourself at both schools and think which one feels best.

I will be the first to tell you that my opinion is biased since I'm a student here at Auburn so take my opinion for what it's worth. I love being at Auburn. I chose to come here over schools I was accepted to that were ranked higher and don't regret it at all. The new small animal hospital is going to be incredible and our large animal facilities are still fairly new and a lot nicer than other schools that I visited. The dress code seems like a pain beforehand but it really isn't all that bad. You learn quickly how to adjust to it and it makes the transition to clinics easier since you're already used to dressing professional. I am always in dress code and am always comfortable so you don't have to wear heels and skirts everyday unless you want to.

As far as large cat experience, there is a zoo vet club and an exotic companion animal club. Through the AAZV chapter, I've done behind the scene tours at the Montgomery zoo and the Atlanta zoo. Some of my classmates did externships over the summers at different zoos and large cat sanctuaries. As with any school, there are options out there if you look for them and take the initiative to get them. The faculty at Auburn are incredible at helping students gain experience with whatever you're interested in. We do have faculty that have worked on large cats and can help find those opportunities.

I don't know if this will influence your decision in comparing UT verses Auburn but Auburn is fully accredited while UT is on limited accreditation. I know that people say that once they finish some updates to their hospitals that they will be fully accredited again but you never know what inspectors/evaluators will find with future inspections. Personally, limited accreditation would make me nervous since it's basically one step away from losing accreditation. I wouldn't want to work as hard as I have to get through vet school to have the school lose their accreditation before I graduate and then have to spend an extra $10,000 for licensing testing since I would have graduated from a non-accredited school. Again, this is just my opinion and hopefully UT will be back to fully accredited after their next inspection but it's something to keep in mind.

UT has limited accreditation?? Wow! I thought all US schools were fully accredited....Are there other schools that aren't fully accredited in the US as well?

I have a prereq to take for Auburn as well. Is it the Animal Nutrition course you need for your prereq? I am enrolled in the course at OK State. I know they have a deadline to complete the course by June 15th, so yeah I'm almost in the same boat as you, except I just forked over the money and enrolled in the course figuring I will have to complete it either way- whether is it by June 15th this year to meet their prereq deadline, or I will have to complete it before applying again next year. Soooo......yeah I'm frustrated because it makes it difficult to layout a timeline and start working towards something- even if it's just working on improving you application for next year- when they won't even tell you your position on the waitlist.

So my question is, how exactly did you go about asking this? Because I am in a similar situation.

Does anyone have a copy of the dress code that they could post here or PM to me? I'm trying to slowly build up a wardrobe between now and August since all I've had reason to wear for the past 3 years was scrubs or jeans.

Thanks!

I'm not a student at either school, but I have been accepted at Auburn and am waiting to hear from Tennessee. After my Auburn interview, I was absolutely in love with Auburn and was super depressed about the possible decision of having to choose my in state (TN) over Auburn. However, after visiting Tennessee, all the things I was worried about turned out to be wrong. I was expecting old outdated facilities, unhappy students, crappy weather, but I was proved wrong on all accounts. Buggerdoodle, I know that it is on limited accreditation, but if you had seen the new equine facilities (farm animal is still under construction), then you would know that there is no way it won't be considered up to date. A horse sized MRI, a 20 yard long 4 ft deep underwater treadmill, a completely enclosed soft surface lameness arena (with a hard surface area also enclosed), just to name a few. So, limited accreditation is no longer any concern of mine. And the students at Tennessee were just as friendly as the students at Auburn. Now, the facilities at Tennessee aren't completely brand new and shiny (especially the student classrooms, but they also weren't 30 degrees...) but they are updated and the equipment is new. And I was talking to a fourth year student doing rounds in the exotics area and she verified what the first year students were saying, there is a big cat from Tiger Haven pretty much once a week.

Like everyone else has said, you have to make the best decision for you. Maybe a pros/cons list? According to the spreadsheet on the Estimated Costs thread, the price difference would be $20k for tuition. Also, I have no idea why cost of living is estimated so high at Tennessee. Unless I was renting a 4 bedroom house by myself, I can't fathom needing $1600 a month to live. Anyway, I hope we both get accepted at Tennessee 🙂. Or that you get called off the wait list at your in state 😉

Im doing the ok class for animal nutrition right now, its gonna be a crunch to finish but if youre gonna do it do it now it has five exams so you have to start it now if youre gonna have it done in time for this year

Anyone have input from your experiences as a student at Auburn so far? In terms of pros and cons?
