AZCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I kinda expected that. i have a voicemail they left me on Thursday also that I listen to when I convince myself it was all a dream

I'm more waiting on that e-mail for rotation sites. I like the idea of knowing for sure where i'm goin 3rd year.

How long did it take you guys to hear back after submitting the secondary materials? I'm almost at two weeks now without hearing back.

hey guys

i was accepted on the 19th of September and just now received the letter for picking the rotation sites. It comes in the mail with a packet from the dean and you select your top 3 choices. It was dated on the 22nd but took about two weeks to get to me.

Turnover seems to take anywhere from 2-3 weeks usually, though this is still the peak of the cycle so it could be a bit slower because AZCOM gets a lot of applications. You can always call and check on your status if you haven't, the school's pretty receptive to the occasional proactive maneuver.

Make sure to check your portal too. I got an interview invite on the portal but never received any email or phone call telling me that it was there.

AZCOM was surprisingly quick with me - I submitted their secondary last night (10/4), and I received an interview invitation through MWUNet today (10/5).

Earliest date for me was January 18, 2011.

Where are you from? Just wondering b/c I'm curious how long it was in the mail. Congrats though and thanks for the update. 👍

They never called me and left a message! But I do log onto the online portal almost daily to make sure they don't suddenly revoke my acceptance... That would suck since I already cancelled my other 3 interviews...

 So do I. I was hoping the call was to ask me what rotation site I wanted but I was at work and orienting on our telemetry unit so I couldn't answer the call... Damn lol

I called admissions today and then was transfered to the dean's office to find out about rotation sites... not sure why. They said they'd call back with the answer as to when information would go out but never called back. I'm almost tempted to e-mail Dr. Speicher to ask about the placements but I'm resisting. As evidence by another poster apparently it comes in the mail along with your acceptance packet. I'm a pain in the ass

Yeah...I'd definitely hold off on calling Speicher as I'm pretty sure he's been having a rough couple of weeks (white coat ceremony white coat fiasco, white coat ceremony, and dealing with the 2013 and 2014 rotation business that's ongoing).

I figured. I'll try to be patient  Excitement is evil

could someone please post the secondary questions? I'm having a f***d up time with one of my transcript and my primary is STILL not complete b/c of it and not verified!! please!

Why do you believe CCOM would provide you with the type of osteopathic medical education you are seeking?

Why should CCOM accept you into this year's class?

Replace CCOM with AZCOM and voila.

Don't forget to tack on the almighty (if applicable):

Just got an interview invite but January 18th was the earliest date.

Never mind. Just moved it up to next Friday.

Darn! You definitely beat me to that spot by maybe 10 minutes.

Is interviewing Jan 21 too late? AZCOM is my top choice so I'm wondering how hard I should be trying to get an earlier spot?

(psst if anyone is holding an earlier spot that they plan on canceling I'll gladly take it with many thanks)

I just posted a thread asking that same question. I got my interview invite this morning at 9:00 and moved it up to 10/15 at 11:00. So I think its reasonable to expect more spots to open up for you.

Hey all, I really like AZCOM and was placed on "hold" for an interview about a month ago...this thread and other AZCOM threads recommended writing an update letter, which I did a few weeks ago. Can current students/applicants give me some insight on whether or not an update is successful in getting an interview? I was bummed to be on "hold"--I have an interview at ATSU-SOMA soon but I would have to say AZCOM is my top top choice. Any advice is appreciated..should I call AZCOM to try to figure out when the committee will review files next? Not sure what to do at this point than to wait it out..I feel that my stats are decent enough and I have extensive clinical, community service and other experiences along with strong LORs. Stats: 3.4 cgpa 3.0 sgpa, 28 (10B, 9V, 9P). THanks again!

Hey thanks so much for the reply random. That made me feel better. So reading through the thread it looks like new dates that open are immediately posted in the portal? So I can check there instead of phoning them? Is this true?

Thanks for the help guys. I'm starting to get a bit giddy with feeling like an acceptance could be in my reach

Ya don't bother calling them. Just re-check a few times a day and I'm sure something will open up....good luck!

Thanks for all the help everyone. Thanks to you guys I'm now on Nov. 2nd, booked during a break in a virology lecture.

Hopefully I'll get to see all of you next September at AZCOM!

Cheers =)

You'll be a month behind if you don't show up at AZCOM 'til then. 😉
Best of luck with the interview.

Can someone chime in with some criticism for this school? The NSU thread has some pretty good constructive criticism. From your experiences with this school, what do you disapprove of or worry about. Such as NSU they don't like spanish being thrown at them during their busy schedule and the horrible biochem department.

Bearing in mind that I've been truly-involved with this school for about two months and that's it: My only real complaint as far as classes go is with anatomy lab. It's kind of a love-hate relationship because on the plus-side you get to do the dissections yourself (while many schools let you do this, apparently there are others that do not) but on the con-side you only do every third dissection/lab because the class is so large that they just don't have the bodies or facilities to have everybody doing every dissection (they counter this by making the lab open 7/week, from ~6:00AM-10:00PM).

Another complaint would be that the entire campus shuts down on holidays, so when we had Memorial Day awhile back the library was closed the day before an anatomy exam (which is a slight issue when ~1/2 of the practical questions are image-based [x-rays, diagrams, etc] and ~1/4 of those questions come from a manual that the anatomy department makes for each unit that you can only access in the lab during dissections or in the library).

Aside from those things, which are somewhat nitpicks, I really don't have any complaints against the school. The biochemistry and histology departments are great; anatomy isn't BAD it's just a bigger pain in the butt compared to the other two basic science departments I've encountered so far. Also, all of the departments are very-receptive to students. All of the professors repeatedly tell us to stop by their offices if we're having any issues with anything and after each exam there is a formal exam review in order for students to see what questions they missed and why, and there have been multiple occasions already in which post-review the faculty have decided to double-score questions which students had posed reasonable defenses for why they should have been accepted as correct during the review.
Also, kind of in the "Pro" and "Con" categories are exams. We have at least one exam a week. So far there hasn't been more than one BIG exam (anatomy, biochem, or histology) per week but the past couple of weeks some of our "accessory" classes (OMM and human behavior) have had exams in addition to the weekly big exam, which complicates your week a bit but is survivable. I personally like that we have weekly exams because it means I'm not studying half of a term's worth of information for a midterm and final as my only two grades in a class, and it forces me to keep up on studying every week rather than taking it easy, but it is mentally-draining keeping up with at times for most people.

I also know many schools don't have mandatory attendance and that some others do, but at AZCOM attendance isn't mandatory for lectures in any of the basic sciences, it's just "highly-recommended." I find this to be a great policy because I and many others are more independent-learners than classroom-learners so this gives us the option of either sleeping-in or getting work done during lecture and only going to class when we feel like it would be beneficial to do so or it's required (such as biochem workshops or any labs).

Also, disregard any awkward sentences, errors, or scattered-thoughts, as I'm typing this in a rush over my lunch-break.

I guess I'll chime in a few thoughts, since there have been some issues as of late when setting up our 3rd year.

Scheduling: you will find that there will be weeks where you wonder why they dumped 4 tests within a span of 10 days and left close to 2 weeks free. It might happen again to the 1st years, and it happened to us again a little over a week ago. Also, I hope the first years enjoy the murderous biochem exam the day you come back after Winter break 🙁

This also goes for classes in general. Our schedule for this quarter is bizarre, with each week looking different from the rest. Some days we have lab in another room or at another time and other times, things change completely and you'd have to be there in class to know or have a helpful friend who goes.

Changes: AZCOM has a fairly rigid system, both in academics and administration. Things change very slowly and only with a ridiculous amount of effort. For example, when 2013 came to town, there was no wifi in the auditorium. Only after 6 months of work did our fearless leader (then class president) get it installed and it is still slow at times. Had there not been much involvement, the 1st years would've been in the same situation as us.

This also goes for classes. Psych was criticized for years, with each class loathing the lectures and exams. The course director left last year, so it has changed a lot, but that's really only because he left, not because our concerns got through. Still, it's worth letting them know what you think because you never know what could happen next quarter.

There's probably a few more grips and I might bring it up later, but it's nothing game breaking. I'm just eager to get to 3rd year because this grinding gets old really fast.

Wow! That is a fast turnover. I have been complete since 9/29. Are you an AZ resident or are your stats really high?

I'm a CA resident. 3.69 GPA/32S.

AZCOM does seem to be faster than CCOM. There's a spot open for October 13th, but flights are pretty expensive now unless you happen to be an AZ resident willing to make the drive.

I was complete on 9/14 and I got a letter today stating that "AZCOM has put [my] application for the Class of 2015 on hold pending possible future interview invitation"

Honestly, I'm alright with this because it is the first communication I have had from AZCOM (I only knew my app was complete from looking at the portal) and I know my application hasn't been lost in limbo.

Got my official acceptance letter today. Also had a paper where we could choose 3 rotation sites, or we could e-mail Dr. Speicher. I chose to e-mail him my preferences since mail is slow lol We'll see when I hear back. I chose LA, Modesto/Turlock, West Valley. We'll see what I get but being this early I'd say I probably have a good chance at LA.

I checked my mail and got nothing... But you live closer to AZ so maybe mine will come tomorrow. I hope! So jealous... 🙄

yeah baby! i got my official acceptance letter today in the mail. so sssstoked! it's looking like i'll be heading there. anyone else for sure going? let's be friends.

I didn't get my letter yet either. I'm disappointed. 🙁

I'm feeling really torn about AZCOM. I really loved it there, and it felt right. I also really like that we can pick our rotation sites this early. Since I have a family it would be great to know that we wouldn't have to move (I would pick a Phoenix rotation). The only downside for me right now is the tuition.

Do you think an extra 10K in tuition per year will make a big difference in the long run?

i have an interview at touro-ca this monday, and we'll see how that goes. as of right now, i'm pretty much leaning towards azcom, i really loved the school.

I know it sounds like A LOT of money right now (I just about went into shock when I was officially $20k in the med school hole before the first quarter even began) and it is, but in the big picture that extra $10k/year for four years, even if you say it balloons into $100k before you start paying your loans off, is only ~ a year's take-home (which in all reality, you can use some pre-tax income to payoff student loans) as a PCP, not even that if you specialize. I'll assume you have an acceptance somewhere else, so then my next thoughts (which I'm sure you've already considered) are the financial and emotional costs of moving a family to wherever that is (especially if you're moving from a place where not only you but your family has an extended support network to a place where that support network isn't there). Plus there are considerations of education-quality (which seems better?). Then again, I'm single and am working with a completely different perspective. Hopefully there are some married lurkers that are current students that have gone through a similar scenario that can chime in (or you might consider posting this as a topic in the osteopathic forum)...

Hi everyone, do we have to put deposit before getting the rotation site confirmation? I have sent a rotation site preference to Dr. Speicher, but not sure if I have to put deposit in order to get confirmation.

Thanks and good luck for someone still waiting for the acceptance. That's a great school.

I just got my official letter of acceptance in the mail today too!!! I was also wondering this... I will be holding out on my deposit until at least Dec 1st since my state schools don't tell us our status until after Nov 15th.

I just got my letter today too. I emailed it back and chose west valley as my #1 choice. If I am able to get that, I'm pretty sure I'll attend AZCOM. The stability of being able to stay in one place for 4 years outweighs the extra tuition since my children wouldn't have to switch schools so often.

Ok, my fellow AZCOMians, since we've now all been accepted I want to voice some of my concerns and seek some reassurance about AZCOM.

When I interviewed I couldn't help but feel that there wasn't much to do outside of school in terms of social life. When I asked what people do after midterms to some of the ambassadors they said not much, maybe just hang out with friends for a bit and then perhaps get back to studying at night. I really want to go to a school that's balanced academically and socially and has activities I can participate in outside of school - ie nightlife, recreational things, etc.

Also, is the competition really as cutthroat as I've heard? One of my friends is currently a first year and she says she is dying. She is a strong student, too, did well at UC Berkeley, so all I can come up with is that the competition is fierce. I'm not afraid of working hard, I just don't want it to be impossible to be in the top third of the class.

I'm pretty much deciding between here, KCUMB, and NSU right now. NSU was great socially, there is tons to do in south Florida, but the academics weren't as strong as the others. KCUMB was pretty damn balanced academically and socially, the only knock against it is that its in the midwest. I'm having a hard time trying to find a clear favorite.

Since I'm married and have kids, the lack of a social life doesn't really bother me , but cutthroat competition would. So I hope that's not true.

I'd like to hear more about this too.

I don't really see the competition aspect of med school much but I have my husband in school with me so we don't spend a lot of time just hanging out at school. There will be people who complain how poorly they did on a test and turns out they got an 89. I figure avoid those people and become friends with people who are supportive and won't brag about their scores or complain when they didn't do "well". That being said the atmosphere or cooperation is different in every class. I started with class of 2012 which is a class that really worked together the first two years and just tried to help each other out. I am graduating with the class of 2013 and, no offense, they just don't help each other out much as a class. In smaller groups maybe but not on a larger scale. If you want to be in the top third of the class then study hard and do well on the tests and try not to worry about everyone else.

That doesn't sound too bad to me. The only kind of competition I would worry about is the kind where people are actively trying to put other people down in order to make themselves look better, for example, sabotaging someone else's studying, project, etc. Healthy competition doesn't scare me. I probably have a bit of that myself.

Sadly, I'd have to second this. 2013 as a whole isn't so much cutthroat as we are inclusive or perhaps even lazy in that community aspect. The forums, for example, started to degrade rapidly going into Spring of last year and this year was looking the same. I volunteered my time last year to maintain the forums and post info, but I got busy too and seeing as how there was no incentive to carry on, I stopped.

This year, people have asked me to provide materials again and so far, I've provided a lot of old notes but beyond that, there's only a little of help from the group as a whole. After managing and seeing the 2012 forums, they had great leadership, which might've spurred on some camaraderie that 2013 is missing. I don't know, but I don't think it's anything negative as we are just kinda apathetic when it comes to the whole 'class teamwork' thing. Also, if you're part of the 2013 forums, you probably know who I am now

In reality, it's the class make up that really decides attitudes. I don't know how active 2014 is with notes and study guide sharing.

At the worst, just go around asking people for things and you'd be surprised at how many are willing to help you if you approach them. I probably never would've posted all of those old notes had no one asked me to. It's not like I wanted to hoard them but I just didn't think people wanted them or needed them since no one really said anything.

hey guys so i was just wondering how ppl are deciding between rotation sites. Ultimately all I rlly want is a site which will let me have good clinical experience and is a solid site to rotate at. I dont really care about location. If any 3rd or 4th years could let me know from experience which rotations sites are good that would be awesome. Im thinking bout choosing LA or IL as my top choice but hope to have some student feedback before I chose. THX

Megathunder:

You get as much out of this place academically and socially as you want. There is ALWAYS something going on club-wise, intramural sports (we're in the middle of softball and I think they've already had either volleyball or 3-on-3 basketball), people from different programs are ALWAYS getting together with one another to socialize after exams and what-not, and there are cycling clubs and hiking/outdoorsy get-togethers pretty often. Also, you have to keep in mind that AZCOM midterms aren't really midterms except for OMM and Human Behavior because you have a basic science test every week (and therefore any "midterm" is really just another unit exam), so that's why a lot of people just go back to studying the day of an exam (or you could be a second-year and have four exams over one week like the current students just had).

As far as competition goes, it really just depends on who you interact with. For the most part, most of the people I've encountered are very helpful towards one another and are not cutthroat at all. Inevitably there are those..."people"...that mope because they only made an "A-" but those people are present at EVERY school (you're going to be surrounded by hyper-Type A people, it's a fact you just have to accept). That being said, most everybody in med school has to be either a really good student or a genius. Think of it in this way: in high school you were likely "Big Nerd on the Block" academically because you had all kinds of people in classes with you that you were compared to. In undergrad you were likely "a good student" but not as highly-ranked academically because the overall pool of people was more intelligent compared to high school. Now this is med school, some of the best and brightest minds the nation has to offer. It's a lot harder to be "top of the class" or to "outshine your peers" because all of your colleagues are just as academically-competent if not more-so (or they might adapt to the transition to med school more quickly and presently are better but won't be once you adjust too) than you at this stage.

Med school is what you make of it. You study your butt off if you want to pass; you study your butt, upper-extremity, lower-extremity, and gonads off if you want to be in the top 1/4. Top in your class, you're likely a genius that just happens to study a lot or sold your soul to the Devil, maybe both depending on how anal-retentive you are.

thanks random, great info as always.

i personally really liked it. my friend showed me around and there really is plenty to do there but not too much where it would be detrimental. i'm just trying to figure out how i want to rank my rotation locations..

placed on hold here :/ i found it strange cus i don't have anything pending. Does anyone know the reasons people get put on hold and the chances of getting an interview after being put on hold?
