  1. Pharmacist
Hello pharmacy community,

I have decided that I want to pursue becoming BCCCP (critical care) certified. I am planning on taking the exam late spring or fall 2026.

For some background on myself and my education, I did not do residency. I have worked in hospital pharmacy in level 1 trauma centers for over 6 years. My current hospital is a level 1 trauma center, teaching health system, with over 1,000 beds. I staff very often in the ED, OR, and our 7 ICUs. I specifically ask to work these positions so that I can get hands on experience with patient cases. I also keep a running note on my phone on disease states and medications I feel that I need to review as I’m working. I am typically not a good standardized test taker, however I did pass the NAPLEX and MPJE (Ohio) both on the first try.

For those that have taken the BCCCP, or are preparing to, I have a couple questions for you to decide the best way to study for it:
1) How hard is it if you did not do residency? As I see the pass rate is low for those who didn’t.
2) What areas did you focus on the most and the least?
3) After the exam, what areas do you wish you focused on more or less, if any?
4) What resources did you use to prepare for the exam? (Websites, podcasts, hard copy resources, things like quizlet, books, study apps, etc.) Which did you find most helpful, and least helpful?
5) How long do you believe is an adequate time to study for before taking the exam, if not right out of residency?
6) Any other suggestions or recommendations

I have heard mixed reviews about the following resources - what are your thoughts and recommendations (even if just buying certain things from different products/packages):
  • HYMR
  • StatPearls
  • ASHP
  • ACCP
  • ACCP Clinical Pharmacist’s Guide to Biostatistics and Literature Evaluation book
  • BCCCP Pharmacy & Acute Care practice exam

Your feedback is much appreciated ahead of time! I am going to shadow/work alongside ED and ICU specialists before I take this exam so I can get hands on experience. My managers are very supportive. If you have any suggestions for while I’m doing this, please let me know!

Since there are a lot of resources, but very little posts or feedback on this exam, I want to spend my time wisely using the best materials and focusing on the most important areas to study. Also, if anyone else is studying for the BCCCP exam, we could potentially start a study group or bounce questions off of each other. I'm planning on taking it in the summer/fall of 2026.

Thank you so very much ahead of time!
