Black premeds/doctors around?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I also love how Americans keep hold of their heritage. People who were Born and raised in Jamaica wouldn't consider you Jamaicans, just kids raised by Jamaicans . But it really doesn't matter wishing you all best of luck !! Bless up!

I get sooooo much attitude from Jamaicans when I call myself Jamaican but then tell them I wasn't born there lol I'm not sure why it's such a pet peeve to them, even my extended family gets mad haha

I've learned the proper term is Jamaican American. I'll get chewed out if I ever leave the American part out [emoji23]

Nigerian here, and I can attest to the insanely high "expectations" lol. I used to get grounded for B's when I was younger:laugh:

I'm not nigerian but I am an immigrant and had a similar experience 😛

Sad to see very very little AA premed students at my supposedly diverse UG...Mostly just east asian, Indian and white for us.
"Diverse" at schools means anything other than white males. Schools are generally 50-50 when it comes to gender, and have high asian populations (indians included) so they're technically diverse. Blacks, latinos, and natives are out of luck

Lolz. I'm pasty white, but I'm black on the inside and wish I was black.
Lol sorry doesn't count

Ha HA its cool. its like someone saying they are Italian and you ask them something about Italy and they have no clue . I feel like I was lied to!! But I love my Jamaican Americans though so its all good. Any ladies out there looking for a Yard man .. hit me up lolz :ninja::ninja:

Immigrants parents are the true savages!! Even though I'm first generator with them no sympathy for me:ninja:

Not sure why it is so contested. I never got any flak for referring to myself as Chinese even though I was born in Hong Kong and they operate on an independent govt infrastructure. Never have I even been called Chinese American. I think these labels are somehow more loosely used on Asians.

I'm technically Taiwanese but I'm not going to call you out for calling me Chinese. But what's interesting is that my family has been on Formosa for 200+ years (so we are actually Taiwanese and not CKS refugees).

My mom can't standing being called Chinese though.

Hello friends! Black American, racial justice organizer, recently accepted this cycle [emoji16] Didn't expect my interviewers to be positively intrigued by my racial justice work, but I also didn't make an effort to show restraint lol Worked out in my favor in the end I guess. Black love [emoji173]️

What is CKS?

So just to ask a question what motivates you guys and keeps you motivated to move forward in this journey?

Feeling a bit demotivated to finish this last semester strong but I guess that comes with Senoritis lol

I think about the reputation I have made for myself and the expectation from my professors. That always make me put in the extra work. And if that doesnt work I think about my mama and how I need to buss my a*s off to make sure she is comfortable in her old age

That's so awesome I love seeing people work in the community and give back. I'm trying to get more involved with things like that, with grassroots and I'm hoping to start an NAACP chapter in my school. Can you give a little info on what you did?

- Everything I had to go through to get a chance at college. When I feel discouraged, I think about all of the naysayers that told me I wouldn't amount to anything.
- My mother's rare medical condition prompted me to push myself to become apart of a hopeful solution to help others like her in the future.

Also, being able to take care of my mother the way she took care of me when I was at my lowest.

Half Jamaican (American) and half Puerto rican.

And to be honest, my current job teaching is what motivates me internally to keep going, but when that light fades my boyfriend has been a great supporter and motivator when I stopped believing in myself.

Hi everyone, black person here! To elaborate, lol, I'm African-American of Cameroonian origin, but born in Germany. It's...complicated. Also, in response to previous comments, immigrant parents are indeed the realest and truest of all savages.

Hey everyone, love this thread! I was born in Nigeria and moved to the states when I was a child. I think this video below essentially described my parents stance on my academic life until I was in college

Lol classic. I had a Nigerian friend in HS, let's call her Joli, as well and I remember she told me that her parents would sometimes say: "Why can't you be more like Lucca? Lucca works much harder than you." And at the same time my parents (I'm from South America) would be like "Why can't you do as well in school as Joli, you need to try harder."

You can't win. To be fair though, I definitely didn't work hard in HS lololol

Hey,

So, I'm a jamaican American female premed. My school literally has no other black person in my year who is premed, and I'd like to communicate with some others.
How is everything going with your guys' process?

Yea definitely check out the underrepresented in medicine subforum.

And I'm a Jamaican American female pre-med too 🙂

Jamaican American female pre-med checking in, too
Also a long time lurker...

Thank you! I never knew this existed.

That's crazy, I'm a Jamaican American female premed as well.

I have been out of school for almost five years, but failing, becoming a failure, and accomplishing my goals are some things that keep motivating me.

Also I didn't win the 1.5 billion, jk! But winning that money would be nice

Lol real talk. As soon as I saw the first number for that powerball I was like "well, ****."

Already joined the thread but based on everyone else's intro, I wanted to follow the trend....

Black female here, 2nd generation Midwesterner. (My family was originally from the south: Alabama and Tennessee). Mom is black from Michigan and my dad was blacker from Michigan. Lol. #sarcasm

On a serious note. I'm loving this thread and the positive vibe! [emoji4]

Yes, finally someone made a black thread outside of that dry sub forum for URMs. Lol we're making our way through.

Guys please post resources here for us, I can really use some.

@dreamadream what types of resources? I found a facts sheet on the breakdown of acceptances by race for each med school attached to this comment

@dreamadream do you mean like black/URM-specific scholarships, programs, and other opportunities?

Dead.

Jamaican American female here! Prepping for my interviews
How are you prepping, if you don't mind me asking.
I'm a year and a half away from preparing for anything med school related, but I've always wondered what the interviews are like.

@dreamadream do you mean like black/URM-specific scholarships, programs, and other opportunities?
URM specific scholarship info would be great :ninja:
