I haven't found a facebook group either - but I'll join if you start one!

As for health insurance, I'm still covered under my parents' plans for the rest of the year and beginning of next... but once I turn 26, I apparently turn into a pumpkin and need to find my own.

I too want to do some EMS in the States - and I definitely agree that if I were trampled by cows, I'd want some sort of coverage. I don't want to be without insurance - I haven't personally had to deal with it, but one of my roommates didn't have any when I lived in New York. She had a pretty nasty hematoma and plenty of other injuries after being mugged, and wouldn't go to the doctor due to the cost. I'd just rather be covered than have to deal with the possibility of something happening.

It just seems like having a plan here as well as NHS is a hassle... but if that's the only way to be covered when I'm back in the States, I guess that'll have to do 🙂

Hello Hello!

Health Insurance.

Well...NHS is relatively easy to join, so do that as soon as you get here. I chose to keep my health insurance at home because of some health issues BUT I am also a member of BVA and SAVMA, both of which provide EMS insurance for pretty low yearly rates. You want to join one or both as a student doing EMS(if you are doing EMS in the states I recommend SAVMA), because they have specific insurance for vets at very discounted rates. They also provide you with EMS opportunities and lots of other fun stuff, even after you graduate.

I am actually the contact person for SAVMA (student AVMA) at Glasgow, as I am trying to start a student chapter here, so if you have any questions about it, let me know!!

So I started a Facebook Group for the Glasgow vet kids since I haven't come across one, its called Glasgow Vets 2011 (kept name of group in theme with past Glasgow vets groups) let me know if you can't find it. I'm not the most computer savvy person so I may have put a privacy setting on the search by accident!😀 Please join I'm the only member so far lol..

Thanks so much! I studied abroad in York my junior year of college, so I'm familiar with signing up for NHS - definitely easy 🙂

Seems that packages with acceptance letters were lost in the mail since they were sent out on the 24th of Feb and no one ever got them, at least I never received mine. Instead an e-mail Package with everything was sent out instead lol.. Just wanted to share just in case someone's offer e-mail got put into the junk mail box! Any way I'm glad to get something so that I can now send in my deposit and confirm my offer!😀 I was getting a little worried! By the way does anyone know what is meant by including a written acceptance with the deposit? Do I just write a letter and say "I such and such accept my offer for Glasgow class of 2016 vet med" or something like a long those lines? Just in the past when accepting an offer to an academic program I was given a specific acceptance letter with a check yes or no and sign, Just wanted to make sure I didn't over look something!

Hey hokiepaws12 and other Glasgow folks I will be matriculating in the fall as well. Long short I deferred my last year's acceptance for personal reasons in trying to get myself over the pond. And so on a last minute whim around September I decided to reapply to AVC UPEI (I was waitlisted last year)....I had not retaken any classes in the time up to reapplying...just the GRE and more animal experience...I did not believe not taking classes would have had such an adverse impact as I was in a good position last year...for an interview. However, I did not get invited for an interview this year (there may have been a conspiracy 😉)

But I will be sending in my deposit for Glasgow and my acceptance letter within the next few weeks here.

So I am from Virginia too...whereabouts are you from??

I just got back from a trip to NYC, and was so excited to see the email - it finally feels real now 🙂 As for the written acceptance, I'm a little confused too, I kept looking for some sort of form, but didn't find any.

Hi Tambotie, I'm a second year grad student at Virginia Tech so Blacksburg for the time being and what part of VA are you from?

Hi Hokiepaws12! I live in Fairfax VA. I am in my late 30's so this a career change obviously. I currently work for a gov't consulting company as a sr. financial analyst. So I am getting my head around having selling all of my stuff.....but my friends say it is just stuff...that can be replaced! 🙁 I do have a road bike and not sure if I will be selling that or bringing with me a piece of luggage. I have a dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, that I would be bringing with me of course 🙂. No SO anymore (and that was a four year relationship)....long distance thing and moving with me he was not so keen on...

Just got backs from a RAVS trip to find the email offer in my inbox! Such a relief! I was getting really worried. I am also confused about the written acceptance - I think I will email Joyce and find out exactly what she means. When I get an answer I will post it here.

I'm from Arizona and can't wait to move to Glasgow. I'm sure the weather will take some getting used to, but it will be nice to see some rain. It is currently 90 degrees here -- pushing the 100s already 🙁

Hokiepaws - I tried looking for the facebook group, but couldn't find it. Perhaps there is some kind of privacy block or something? I would love to join.

Tambotie - I know exactly what you mean about selling stuff. I have some things that I am hoping to pawn off on my parents and my sister for the next 5 years.

Here's the Link for the Glasgow Vets 2011 Facebook Group🙄

*Were two members strong as of right now lol... so come on guys don't be shy and lets get the Glasgow Vets 2011 Facebook party started :hardy:

*Also I forgot to mention that Glasgow will start pulling people from the alternate list starting April 30th. Thought I would throw that out there for anyone waiting to be pulled from the wait-list :xf:

Yay!!
Do any current students actually know anyone that has been wait-listed and then accepted? I am just kind of curious as to how far down the list they move.

Sorry Awaring...don't really know. 2 years ago when I was accepted I don't even think there was a list--none of my friends were pulled off of one to my knowledge. And I'm not sure with the first years. There are like 50 first year N. Americans though in that class? It's huge. I think all the UK schools are still figuring out how to deal with the increasing number of applications!! Good luck! :luck:

Tambotie and hokiepaws,

I am finishing up my first year at Glasgow(just have finals left) and I too am from Virginia. Originally Fairfax(Woodson High woop woop!) but now Loudoun. If you have any questions that you want to ask that shortnsweet hasn't already covered or about the first year in general(this year has been a little different then previous years) I would love to answer them. I am currently home in VA for a couple more weeks then heading back to glasgow for exams. So if your in Glasgow and want a tour from a first year perspective I can do that! or if your interested in meeting up in VA I can do that too!

Hokiepaws...one of my friends here graduated from VAtech as well 🙂

Also for anyone that is interested......they just filmed a TV show at the school's small animal hospital that is airing this week in the UK. I posted the link below!

CONGRATS!! 😀
They are good about responding quickly---took a whole 30 minutes for me to get an e-mail, lol.

And you will come to love Neil (Prof. Evans)...he is a pretty funny guy, with excellent wardrobe choices.

this made me laugh! Neil Evans has great style.....we frequently comment on his "swag". Some of my classmates were discussing putting together bracelets that said "WWNED" as in "what would neil evans do"

I am a personal fan of the tight black pants and skinny ties---(though no ties will ever compare to IAJ). One of the 3rd years dressed up like him last year for the Halloween party, and NE loved the pictures---so the bracelets would probably be great hits!

Hope you are enjoying break and not studying too hard yet!!! 🙂

Hi Peachy,
So excited to see another person from VA😀 I'm originally from Charlottesville VA so a little south from you and Tambotie. I totally wish I could meet up for lunch or something because I do have a ton of questions, I'm sure like you did this time last year. Unfortunately, school is so busy right now (I still have to go through the motions of finishing up my master's, even though as soon as I got my acceptance letter I was done with school in my mind ). Also unfortunately Loudoun and Bburg are so far from one another 🙁. However, I might take you up on your offer for a tour of the vet school. I'm sure you saw on here that I'm visiting Glasgow with my parents in about a month and a half and touring the school was on my to do list. I emailed Joyce a while back and still have yet to hear a response... so not sure if she can set something up for me or not. Also peachy you said things have been different this year, just curious in what sense? Also is there anything you wish you had known before starting at Glasgow?

P.S Sent in my deposit and forms for school anyone else?..

peachy I remember you on the Glasgow thread from last year!!! Wow VA and MD seem popular spots from which to head directly to Scotland!!!! 🙂 Yay!!!

Hokiepaws,

Joyce can take a little while to reply sometimes but she usually always gets around to it. When were you planning on coming to Glasgow? My finals are over May 13th and then I will probably hang around a few more days to "unwind" and get my stuff packed up.

In regards to how things are different this year..... I know that this year they changed up the order in which things were taught. Like last year I believe they only did forelimb first session and we did both forelimb and hindlimb. Just little things like that really. They only big things are that exams changed so now there are no negative marks(Yay!!) meaning you couldnt guess on exams cause a wrong answer would take points away from you. We also no longer have a choice on exam essays etc....really nothing too major. The one thing that I enjoy is that we get a month off for spring break! this year first years actually got more than that because we have no classes in third term. So basically... we were given 2 months off to prepare for finals! Its nice but coming from the american system(were you are micro managed) you really gotta learn how to manage your time.

The only thing that I wish that I had known or been more "prepared" for was just how much the weather would effect me. I am a huge SUN girl and there really isn't all that much sun. When the sun is out...Scotland is unbelievably beautiful. But when its not it can be down right depressing. The key is to keep busy and find ways to unwind outside of class. I also think that mentally I should have been more prepared for how homesick I would feel. I have been away from home since I was 19 and never got homesick but being in a different time zone makes it alot harder. It can be overcome but it does effect some more than others.

Tambotie, there are a TON of people from the northern virginia area surprisingly. One girl I went to highschool with, another that lives like 20 min from me and a potential student in your class that I also went to high school with! More and more people are looking to the UK schools because they are truly wonderful programs and tend to be cheaper then attending an american university. I know that Joyce was saying the amount of american applicants has increased each year. This year there are about 36 americans in a class of about 138.

Something for you Glasgow prospects to check out: 🙂

Awesome!

Shortnsweet & Peachy3214 - I know alot of schools send along a supply list, but one wasn't included in the information we received from Joyce - what did you find most useful to bring with you? (I know some bigger items will be much more practical to buy over there)

You should get one eventually, but you'll need a navy blue boiler suit, wellies(green or black), and a white lab coat. Guide to the Dissection of the Dog is the only book you ever need to buy in the first two years in my opinion. You can buy everything from the school or in Glasgow, so save some room in your suitcases! If you have a stethoscope bring it, but you won't really need it until 2nd year. Rain pants and a rain coat are also pretty handy.

Hey Peachy Sorry it's taken me so long to reply.. This week has been a test week so I've been super busy studying. Anywho I'm going to be in Glasgow the 15th - 22nd of May. 😀

I just declined my offer so I hope one of you gets it!

I also just declined my offer, hopefully some of you will hear soon!

Shortnsweet - did you find an apartment through upperclassmen, or did you go through PAD/another service? I know you've mentioned that we should hear from students regarding housing during April and May - do we need to contact Joyce to be put on some sort of list?

Part of me thinks it would just be easier to go through campus housing, but I completely understand what you've said about the benefits of finding your own flat. I don't know if I can justify spending the extra money for living on campus.

I was lucky enough to know someone from undergrad the year above me, so I lived with her. If you want, you can PM me your e-mail and I can forward you the school emails I get? Or shoot Joyce an e-mail about finding private accom 🙂

Another option would be to come, live in student housing for their trial period, 2-4 wks I think, and search for private housing at the same time? I know of a few people who did that.

You should come to UCD... it's fun! (if you have any questions feel free to PM me... I'm a 1st year grad entry student at UCD) I was accepted to both UCD and Glasgow last year and decided for UCD because of the shorter course (4 vs 5 years). I also fell in love with Glasgow for how attentive they were and I'm sure I would have loved it there, but don't give up the chance to go to UCD just for waiting out on Glasgow!

hokiepaws....sorry it took so long to reply studying for finals is sucking up all my time. I will still be around then. My last final is the 15th. Did you ever hear back from Joyce about a tour?

For those of you that are coming to Glasgow next year that are looking for private housing I may be in need of a roommate for next year. I will know next week for sure. Its a pretty simple but cute little flat in Anniesland about a 10-15 min walk from the vet school and about 5 min from the grocery store(morrisons) and the train station. Its 275 pounds a month(pretty cheap) and the bills are not unreasonable. Let me know if you are interested! Im really laid back and super easy to live with so no worries there.

Hey Peachy,
Joyce never got back to me about touring the school.. which is weird..lol So as of right now I guess my dad, mom and myself will be wondering around campus with a map .. lol. I've been too busy myself to bug her about it again but if your willing to show me around that would prob be a lot easier. 😀

Does anyone happen to know anything more about the wait list besides they will start to call people off of it April 30th? Is there a ranking system at all? I haven't heard anything from them...

Which email address did you use? I have 2 that she's emailed me from - but I got a quick response from one of them.

Awaring1 - Not sure about the ranking thing. I just wanted to let you know that the office is on holiday until May 3rd, at least. Also, I heard via email, so I'd look out for that as opposed to waiting for a package to arrive.

Just got the awesome email to inform me that all the positions were filled and the waiting list will not be used. 🙁

Aw i'm sorry Awaring! There's always next year! Keep your chin up.

I won't be applying next year. I was accepted to UCD, but I liked Glasgow better. Oh well.

They'll be lucky to have you and i'm sure it'll all work out for the best. That was my other choice when I applied, and it was one of the toughest decisions I had to make between the two! It's a great school, and we'll still see you at AVS!! You're in vet school and one smart cookie! Yay!

You are too sweet. Thanks. 🙂

Hi all,

I am feeling really stressed right now (self induced I know) about getting myself there! I am thinking I want a flat by myself (as I am older) but I hear you can't get one until you are there and have to stay in temporary housing first and look for a flat. What is the ideal time to get there do so? Such that you can get a flat and get everything squared away before school begins! Does anyone who is already there - shortnsweet or peachy - have a timeline of what you did to get yourself there and settled? My dog is taken care of as far as the quarantining here goes, and I have completed my FAFSA. I have a list of about a 100 questions/things to do but as far as actions taken thus far - it is just the dog and my FAFSA form. I will be completing my student visa application within the next few weeks - the docs that Glasgow sent stated not to do it too early but don't do it too late either.

Step 1: Deep breathes. You're fine.

Step 2: There are a ton of e-mails going out to all of us now whether it be from 5th years or people just looking for flatmates/get rid of their flats. Shoot an e-mail to Joyce and maybe she can forward you some of the emails, or pair you up with something you are looking for. You could also try looking on some place like gumtree. You don't have to stay in student housing before finding a flat, and if you do, you have to be sure there are people on the waiting list for the room, or you find someone to fill your space before you move to the new place, otherwise they will not let you move. Some people also stay in a hotel for a few days or whatnot, but eh, there are plenty of places you can find before getting here. I recommend living with other vets to be honest. And living with an upper year is super easy and a great way to settle. If you want your own flat, some upper years can point you in that direction as well. But technically you can arrange it all before you get here.

I got here the week before orinetation and was fine. I believe that will be around September 10th for you all? Classes start the 20th. Call whatever bank you plan on using here in August to set up an appointment to open a bank account, otherwise, you may be waiting for weeks after you get here to open one, and that is no fun. You may also want to set up appointments for internet/telephone lines before you get here/after you find a flat, as the wait time can be long as well. If you move in with someone, though, they will probably already have this set up.

Also---why are you putting your dog in quarantine? Do you mean getting him the pet passport/titres etc?

As for the visa, they've changed the rules a bit since I applied, but I don't think you can apply until 90 days before your official entry date? I could be wrong, maybe peachy can correct me. It only took me like 3 weeks to get mine. I would do it like the beginning of July?

Glasgow will also be sending you guys fresher packs that I believe come in July. And those have a ton of information about what supplies you need, what to expect, orientation, etc etc.

😀 See, you're fine. It's only May after all!!

Thanks shortnsweet! Regarding my dog, yes I meant getting the titre and pet passport! And you are absolutely right about the student visa - it can't be 90 day prior to the entry date. So I have about a month or so before I can apply for that!

I have gotten a few e-mails about some places and have inquired a bit, not landed anything yet even with another vet student. I certainly don't object to living with another student ...it is just I have been living on my own now for a bit. 😉

I am so busy at work that time feels like it is flying and August will be here before I know it! 🙂 Deep breath, deep breath!

I just have a quick question for current students - when applying for the visa, is it good for all 5 years, or do we have to reapply?

It's good for all 5 years and a little bit (I graduate July '14, and mine goes until November). Even if your passport expires, the visa is still good, you just have to carry both passports.

Thanks, Shortnsweet - that's exactly why I was wondering. My passport expires before the 5 years is up, and I've been debating renewing it now or waiting until it expires. I might just go for it now so I don't have to carry both around with me.
